Harry and Meghan's Netflix series a huge success

antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 16:55

This series is one of the biggest Netflix shows in the US and the UK. It had 2.4 million views in the UK in the first 24 hours.
Whether you liked the show or not, it is clear that Netflix were right to back this and will make a tidy profit from it. And it helps to boost the bankability of Harry and Meghan.

@ComfortablyDazed Nowhere have I said that everyone who watched were fans. But they were all very interested about them. Haters and fans both make money for them.

But the entire purpose of these ventures - at least from H&M’s perspective (not Netflix’s; theirs is entirely to make money) - is to tell ‘their truth’.

They want people to feel sorry for them, to like them, and to win favour. Why else would they need to ‘tell their truth’?

So it remains to be seen as to whether it’s been a success for them.

IcedPurple · 12/12/2022 17:36

1.7 million watched Andrew's car crash interview.

Did that increase his bankability?

3 years on from finding freedom, these two have nothing to sell other than their faded royal connections. After the 'memoirs', what's next?

Paul Burrell made a career out of far less knowledge than Harry and Meghan have.
You are kidding yourselves if you thunk interest will soon decline. They left in 2019. Three years later people are still insanely interested.

I think you’ve misread the situation. People aren’t insanely interested in them, just as they weren’t insanely interested in Paul Burrell either. They just want to know if they are going to make any other accusations or tell any more obvious lies.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 12/12/2022 17:37

I think M and H have committed the cardinal viewing sin of being boring. The only people who will choose to watch episodes 2 and 3 if they didn't binge watch when they were first released are the true devotees. Maybe episode 4 will be explosive and people will sign up in their thousands. Or maybe it will all be the same innuendo and people will ignore 5 and 6.

AutumnCrow · 12/12/2022 17:39

After the 'memoirs', what's next?

A bit of Proust? À la recherche du temps perdu on a loop.

It’s tricky though, because most of Paul Burrell’s career involved him teaching other people to behave in an appropriately “royal” manner - something Meghan has already told us herself she has no clue about as no-one bothered to show her anything. So that’s out as line of tv projects.

So I guess they will have to rely on Paul’s other sales point - being a talking head about Diana. Which they already kind of do, to be honest.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/12/2022 17:40

"Steve, we are like Harry and Meghan, no one is rooting for us but you'll tune in to watch anyway".

😂😂😂

Itsthewhitehat · 12/12/2022 17:40

Paul Burrell is a really bad example. People were interested in the gossip he had for a very limited period. Rehashing ‘we were badly treated’ isn’t fresh gossip.

Are you suggesting that H and/or M will be going into I’m a celebrity at some point? Isn’t that PBs most recent thing people have been vaguely interested in?

'3 years on from finding freedom, these two have nothing to sell other than their faded royal connections. After the 'memoirs', what's next?'

The Jubilee, the funeral. They will be banking info to release as and when.

Sadly the rf need to cut these 2 clowns off, not as punishment but because they clearly aren't loyal or trustworthy and will sell any snippet to Netflix to keep their self declared victimhood status shining bright.

But eventually people will get bored with ‘we went to this event and we’re badly treated. Then we went to this event and we’re badly treated’

The same story with a slightly different setting becomes very uninteresting.

And if Harry and Meghan were not connected to the British Royal Family, nobody would want to watch it.

And if they were as they are, but complained about Thomas and Samantha Markle, very few people would want to watch it.

‘Made a career’………..?

The flash-in-the-pan that was in the tabloids for a bit, appeared in I’m a Celeb, and then descended into complete obscurity?

That Paul Burrell?

He did make a brief career out of divulging royal secrets.

It proves the point. It is the information about the Royal Family viewers are interested in hearing - not the personal story of those monetising their inside knowledge.

Probably an servant or friend could make money out of what they know about the royals, but most don't.

Georgeskitchen · 12/12/2022 17:48

I don't have netflix, no need to watch it, it was all over the papers the next day.
I can only guess that the Royal family's lawyers will be watching very carefully.

Roselilly36 · 12/12/2022 17:49

Not sure really, I watched the first episode on sat morning, didn’t feel inspired to watch another episode, may watch further episodes but not itching to do so, perhaps I will pick it up again over the Xmas break.

antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 17:49

Paul Burrell is still making a career out of it. You can attend events where he talks about how Diana liked her tea and other musings. It may not be high profile, but he still clearly has a career based on his work for Diana.

Paul Burrell is a leach!

Huge ratings winner for Netflix more like, which is all Netflix cares about.

Success... well how would one measure that?

Honestly op. I really don’t Think that’s what harry and Meghan are going for . It might be a career to you, but I’m not sure many folks would agree.

BedTaker · 12/12/2022 17:53

Of course Netflix knew what they were doing. And especially with this 'drop 3 slightly dull episodes and then another 3 a week later with the much juicier stuff' strategy.

Meghan and Harry, not so much.

I watched the first episode. I liked them more than I expected to, which feels weird to admit as I am often on the so called "anti" M&H threads. Further episodes will be background noise only though. I haven't got five more hours to give them 😁

antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 17:54

I was not making any judgement on Paul Burrell good or bad. Simply pointing out that if he can still make a career out of his association all these years later, then Harry and Meghan have got a very long shelf life.

Thing is though they were part of the RF for such a short time as a couple. Between Oprah, Netflix & his book surely they'll have said everything & told all their stories. There won't be anything left to sell & I think their popularity in the US will be shortlived. Their Royal connection is/was what made them bankable

Exactly. Their USP is the RF. There will come time when they have nothing left to sell. Unless of course there is any interest in seeing their day-to-day lives. Keeping up with the Sussexes might run for a series or two but then the audience would expect to see the children. So, they might end up selling their children to the media for money.

Maireas · 12/12/2022 17:55

I've noticed there's quite a bit of them sitting on their kitchen surfaces, can anyone explain that? Seems a bit unhygienic to me.
