Harry and Meghan's Netflix series a huge success

This series is one of the biggest Netflix shows in the US and the UK. It had 2.4 million views in the UK in the first 24 hours.
Whether you liked the show or not, it is clear that Netflix were right to back this and will make a tidy profit from it. And it helps to boost the bankability of Harry and Meghan.

Paul Burrell made a career out of far less knowledge than Harry and Meghan have.
You are kidding yourselves if you thunk interest will soon decline. They left in 2019. Three years later people are still insanely interested.

Oh god, it'll be the Queen's death and funeral. That'll be worth a 2hr special surely.

Oh Lord no, surely even they wouldn't be that tasteless!?

Don’t forget not being invited to the coronation! On their child’s birthday!

Then they can do a series on family estrangement – for both of them.

Then when the royals dip in popularity because Charles is awful, they can do the awkward reunion.

Unlikely Charles will last as long as his parents so then there’s the King’s funeral, and follow-up hooha about who gets to wear a uniform – will just Harry be banned or will nonces be forbidden too?

Honestly, there’s mileage in this for years. I secretly think the palace is in on it too – they’re getting quite the coverage and positivity out of it all, just at a point where many expected the Firm to falter because Charles isn’t half as popular as mummy. Remember how lots of people thought the crown should pass straight to Wills, or that the Queen’s death would be the end of the whole silliness? H&M’s antics are actually making them all popular and relevant again.

I reckon YouTube have made more money. Loads of views of the trailer plus all the comments and they haven't had to spend $$$$. MN probably aren't doing badly out of it either.

Oh I'm sure they'll have a few hours worth of behind the scenes footage, a stack of slights and grievances and plenty of monochrome shots of teary faces.

They'll just be working on the soundtrack for it.

Kinneddar · 12/12/2022 17:23

I think people watched it because its just car crash TV. No doubt though Haz & Meg will see it as a sign of how popular they are when the opposite is probably truer

Be interesting to see the slant Netflix put on the footage for the series when they get divorced

Agree with this. Maybe not actually more money as a total, but as a percentage against expenditures (surely very little) I bet they're raking it in.

AzureOrchid · 12/12/2022 17:24

The whole “ haz “ thing makes me sick 🤮

feellikeanalien · 12/12/2022 17:24

Presumably to keep people's interest they will need to get more specific and name names. Now Harry is directly targeting William. Who will be next? Kate, Camilla., Charles?
I never really had an opinion on them but just found them mildly entertaining. It all seems to be getting a bit out of hand now and I really wonder if Harry in particular has thought through the consequences of his actions.

Upwiththelark76 · 12/12/2022 17:25

I have Netflix . Honestly haven’t even thought of watching Meghan and Harry 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rhondaa · 12/12/2022 17:25

'Be interesting to see the slant Netflix put on the footage for the series when they get divorced'

The negativity from Brits/the UK media/the RF forced them apart! Like Romeo and Juliet! it's all just too tragic 😭

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/12/2022 17:26

It actually hasn't been. Large drops in viewers between episodes and the poor ratings. People are tired of the lies and whining coming from these two.

Thing is though they were part of the RF for such a short time as a couple. Between Oprah, Netflix & his book surely they'll have said everything & told all their stories. There won't be anything left to sell & I think their popularity in the US will be shortlived. Their Royal connection is/was what made them bankable

Do you work for H&M? Your posts are getting slightly embarrassing now!

Exactly what i was thinking 😂

Of course interest will decline. Most royal 'experts' comment on new material. H and M presumably will never rejoin the royal family so will not have any new stories to share. Their story of how they were treated can only be re explained so many times. People will not pay for the same story. From Netflix's perspective they have to make $100 million dollars back on new or maintained subscribers. That's a huge deal!

They will need new ideas. I'm sure that they will produce some new things such as podcasts but once people stop expecting information about the royal family then they will have to compete ina tougher market. It will get harder and $100 million dollar deals will.not be handed over for the insight into feminism or a non royal related.topic. That type of deal was unprecedented and it only existed due to the huge interest in their leaving the RF. Look at Fergie, interest in her has massively declined many years after the divorce. No one is offering her $100 million now and shed take it if they did!

ComfortablyDazed · 12/12/2022 17:29

There was never any doubt that Netflix would make a shit ton of money from it.

I mean, honestly?! That was the entire point of it.

All the viewing figures mean, is that everyone is even more entrenched in their opinions.

I have Netflix, and haven’t watched it because I just wish they’d go away, and don’t want to contribute to the viewing figures in my own insignificant way.

But all the people who don’t like them and watched it, will dislike them even more.

It’s sort of like saying Donald Trump is hugely popular because he’s got so many followers on Twitter.

His followers include vast swathes of haters, as well.

toomuchlaundry · 12/12/2022 17:29

I think you are the only person insanely interested @antelopevalley

antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 17:29

The Netflix series was released on the 8th of December. Four days ago!!
Why would you possibly think that everyone who watched series one would have already watched all three? We don't all binge watch three hours of a series in the three evenings it has been available.

It makes me laugh. This is on a par with the same rubbish about how no one would watch the show. Maybe wait a week or two and see how many people have watched episode two and three then.

OP posts:
antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 17:31

@ComfortablyDazed Nowhere have I said that everyone who watched were fans. But they were all very interested about them. Haters and fans both make money for them.

toomuchlaundry · 12/12/2022 17:31

I’m amazed you haven’t watched your heroes hundreds of time by now @antelopevalley

Penaltyshootoutfan · 12/12/2022 17:31

I totally agree Netflix made the right decision ,was this ever in doubt? The question is was it a success for harry and Meghan . That’s much more subtle and nuanced

succes for Netflix is viewing figures, but success for harry and Meghan is not that simple , it’s also about public perception.

im not sure it’s improved their public perception, I think it’s damaged it even further. People aren’t watching as they are harry and Meghan fans, they are watching to see if they make any further outrageous accusations.

so for me this was a huge success for Netflix. And a terrible failure for harry and Meghan

HeddaGarbled · 12/12/2022 17:31

Best audience figures yet for Netflix in the U.K. - about the same as an episode of Eastenders, and about 15 million less than watched England getting knocked out of the World Cup ☹️

antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 17:32

@toomuchlaundry Xmas Grin
I am not interested. What I am interested in is the reaction of others. That does fascinate me,

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/12/2022 17:34

Hahaha many people do. 4 days is enough time for people to watch 3 episodes, they just haven't chosen too. BBC news at 6 and Coronation street has more viewers on the day of release 😂

I think they've gotten a lot of attention from it but I don't think they've gotten the adoration that they were hoping for. I'm sure its changed some peoples opinion of them for the better or worse but for example they were mentioned in the opening monologue on this weekends SNL "Steve, we are like Harry and Meghan, no one is rooting for us but you'll tune in to watch anyway".

I think this is a very valid point. My adult kids who were great fans of them both to start with are getting very bored and weary with the ‘poor us’ stuff.

There probably isn’t any need to even bother subscribing to Netflix either. The mainstream media are showing all the potentially controversial bits anyway.

If other showbiz people are anything to go by, the ones that go to great effort to show what a happy couple they are and how deliriously in love they are are the ones that very soon hit the rocks. Let’s hope for their sakes that’s not the case in this exercise in self indulgence.
