Harry and Meghan's Netflix series a huge success

This series is one of the biggest Netflix shows in the US and the UK. It had 2.4 million views in the UK in the first 24 hours.
Whether you liked the show or not, it is clear that Netflix were right to back this and will make a tidy profit from it. And it helps to boost the bankability of Harry and Meghan.

Penaltyshootoutfan "im surprised it’s so little to be honest"

No, sensible people read about it here! Then they don't have to watch what sounds, frankly, ineffably boring 😉

Rhondaa · 12/12/2022 18:39

How odd to feature that Bouzy bloke who has form for mocking W&K on Twitter. Surely you'd pick a more credible contributor. It's all just a car crash isn't it.

They could have done such good, #ShiningLights and producing exciting content, but nope. It's like Eastenders. I keep expecting to hear the 'duff duff DUFF!' 'Enders trademark signing off music with every whispery 'I sas FED TO THE WOLVES' comment they come out with Grin.

Feel so sorry for the rf, hope their mh is ok. Not that the Sussexes care.

If you just watch 70% of the first episode of any show on Netflix , it’s counted as if you’ve watched the whole season,

They must think I have watched loads then as I keep trying series on there but haven't found anything good recently, last thing I enjoyed and watched the whole lot was Ozark

It's a success for Netflix just in terms of the coverage it's getting if nothing else.

But for M & H we'll have to wait and see.

I think it will have cheapened their 'brand'.
Which A list celebs would do reality show like this sharing their personal family life and engaging public family gossip? None.
The Obamas? The Clooneys? Oprah?
No. They wouldn't. It would be beneath them.

They've aligned themselves with C list celebs who sell themselves to maintain interest and make money. Problem is they have nothing else to sell after this. Thier royal celeb status is all they are currently trading on.

So I think whether you watchde or not or whether you like them or not, they are now a cheap sell themselves for gossip brand.

Agree it has cheapened it and the a list are distancing themselves , Oprah was very firm when asked about it and said it’s their family matters and I don’t comment on family matters and Michele Obama said she hoped they could all find it in their heart to forgive and resolve this and move on.

but it makes it much worse if they are only bringing a couple of million viewers in, that’s a compete flop compared to what it should have been or what they would have wanted.

@toomuchlaundry Xmas Grin
I am not interested. What I am interested in is the reaction of others. That does fascinate me,

I agree, it is fascinating. 5 pages and running full of posters insisting they are not interested at all 😂

cyrila · 12/12/2022 18:41

People like the Clooneys and the Obamas won't touch them with a barge pole now they know that anything they say or do is fair game to be recorded or remembered to make money from later.

@IcedPurple he probably will become an American citizen in the next few years. And Arnie became governor (?) of California.

Lots of opportunity for meghan and/or Harry to run for political office. And probably suits them too.
I think she can handle professional criticism and rejection, after all as an actress she dealt with it ( I imagine it is much harder to deal with rejection from the family or family firm as the boundaries are all so mixed up).

and I actually think Harry would make a great politician, laid back and yet very used to being in the public eye.

Erm the last time Harry looked anything like a political figure, he was dressed as hitler.

as i said, I’m not a monarchist AT ALL, quite the opposite, but these two are yet to show any talent for diplomacy or politics. They don’t appeal to many lefties in the UK at least, which was a missed opportunity. And I’m hoping they’re not far right, but then he would fit in with the slurs i guess

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 12/12/2022 18:44

Please don’t compare Michelle O to these two 😵

Well Michelle hugged the queen, so some comparison there. They are both huggers.

ComfortablyDazed · 12/12/2022 18:46

They are the antithesis of ‘when they go low, we go high’.

Serenster · 12/12/2022 18:47

They’ve already been called out for being patronising by the UK ambassador from Gabon based on the first three episodes released , so yeah, doing really well on the diplomacy front.

People are interested in the discussion, they are interested in what’s happening Ie the fall out, the gossip and the slagging off, they are hugely, hugely interested in the royal family , because the royals are typically closed book.

I think a lot of people get confused in this, like you and the op, you think if people discuss them or watch then it means you’re interested in them, but fail to take into account if that was the case we would all be listening to meghans Spotify podcasts etc. they aren’t, people are interested in what they are saying about the royals and they are agog at the very public falling out.

it’s like rubber necking a car crash, very few folks do it as they are so interested in the people involved, they are just looking to see the gore/spectacle

it’s why it’s called car crash tv.

I agree. I didn't learn much I didn't already know, but a lot of people don't think about those historical links.

Part 1 is the weakest I think but it's all incredibly inoffensive so far. I suspect anyone looking for name and shame regarding the RF will be disappointed.

ComfortablyDazed · 12/12/2022 18:48

And yes, salient point that Oprah has never aired her dirty laundry to the highest bidder.

They are now on par with the Kardashians. Hell, according to the OP, they’re on par with Paul Burrell! Grin

Not sure what this does for their brand, not to mention their celeb pals, long-term.

maranella · 12/12/2022 18:48

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 12/12/2022 17:37

I think M and H have committed the cardinal viewing sin of being boring. The only people who will choose to watch episodes 2 and 3 if they didn't binge watch when they were first released are the true devotees. Maybe episode 4 will be explosive and people will sign up in their thousands. Or maybe it will all be the same innuendo and people will ignore 5 and 6.

I agree. If something's gripping, three hours of viewing is nothing - it's one evening, at most two. If I can't get enough of something I'll binge a whole series in a day or two.

Yes, I think the trouble with this for them is how much interest there was in it: everyone from The Guardian to the rags did live watching threads so you could just get the headlines, key moments and memes without having to invest three hours of your time in actually watching it.

Which in turn harms them not only from the low audience figures perspective, but also that lots has been memed or turned into content without context – so Meghan’s curtsy is now the story, rather than the bit afterwards where she laughs and says she didn’t know what she was doing.

Of course people are interested in a planet-wide broadcast of a car crash. Why wouldn’t they be?

I am.

I’m not interested enough in H&M to watch the doc though, and I have a Netflix subscription.

User3758965 · 12/12/2022 18:50

Many will cancel Netflix in January as it is very overpriced and there are no offers so to get anything like a half decent picture you have to pay £10.99 a month. Disney+ is available for Tesco Clubcard points, Apple TV is free with Sky VIP for 6 months and is also free with other things, Amazon Prime you also get delivery for your money

Where are Netflix offers, there are none.

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 12/12/2022 18:51

God I love Michelle O, talk about incredibly accomplished! And she has done shows with Netflix, but very different vibe and content. Wonder if Netflix pitched to H&M or the other way round, with their show concept? Maybe it’s a bit exploitative of the company, as I can imagine it must be so exciting developing a show and getting your own content across. Wonder who had final editing rights?

fyi there is quite a lot I think Meghan could do - I never came across her Tig website thing, but it doesn’t sound a bad idea! Not so different to what others do, she could maybe do an E-zine sort of thing, can see that being popular maybe?

with Harry, I just dgaf about him (just another royal, as far as I can tell)… unless he actually starts naming names. Someone above saying “the royals are protecting Andy” (I thought Charles hated him?)… but isn’t Harry too, by not speaking out?

ArcaneWireless · 12/12/2022 18:52

It has been hugely successful for Netflix.

I suspect it will not be for those on it. Not really.

Today’s diamanté tights on a flash night out - tomorrow’s torn used tatty nylons on a back alley’s floor. After having been, if you’ll excuse the expression, royally screwed.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 12/12/2022 18:56

I’m in the Antipodes, and the ONLY place I’ve ever heard mention of some sort of extra-marital affair is on MN.

I'm in the UK and have seen it on social media for the last couple of years, started by alleged hints in the tabloids, long before I saw anyone mention it here. My friends in various foreign countries have all mentioned it too.

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 12/12/2022 18:56

I wonder also… sorry.. what the deal was with Netflix and Oprah and how they decided who got to see what and tell what? Like could they be withholding substantial info to tell in a separate series with another platform, or are all their eggs now with Netflix? Basically… did Netflix get their definitive telling of the royal family? Cos a short series of gentle episodes isn’t much for that tbh

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/12/2022 18:57

I agree, it is fascinating. 5 pages and running full of posters insisting they are not interested at all 😂

People are interested in the discussion, not watching it. Is that too complex?
