Harry and Meghan's Netflix series a huge success

antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 16:55

This series is one of the biggest Netflix shows in the US and the UK. It had 2.4 million views in the UK in the first 24 hours.
Whether you liked the show or not, it is clear that Netflix were right to back this and will make a tidy profit from it. And it helps to boost the bankability of Harry and Meghan.

Does anyone watch the ad supported Netflix, imagine having to watch crap and adverts and still having to pay for it

pizzaHeart · 12/12/2022 19:41

I don’t have Netflix and I’m not going to get it. I was unwell last week so in bed and brain was not working so reading about M&H was a perfect past time for me. I commented on different threads a lot but will I buy their “movie” or subscribe to Netflix to watch it? Never.
I don’t think significantly big amount of people subscribed to Netflix because of the film, they just happen to have Netflix so watched it.
I think Coronavirus brought NF much more customers then H&M.

From Forbes

Harry & Meghan series almost doubled the audience for the first episode of the latest season of The Crown, Netflix’s popular series about Queen Elizabeth II and her family.

It seems young people would rather watch real-life royals than dramatizations about them. Samba reports that adults 20-24 overindexed on live-plus-same-day viewership of Harry, while they underindexed by 14% on episodes of Crown.

Of note to advertisers, especially those who may be eyeing Netflix’s recently launched ad-supported tier, Harry overindexed among households that make $150,000-$200,000 and those with incomes above $200,000.

The crown is a tiny show for Netflix, it just gets a lot of attention here. Netlfix shows are huge, reaching 300 million and up. The crown is just a small show with tiny viewing figures but gets a lot of publicity

antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 19:26

@twinmum2007 You are wrong. For a show on a subscription platform and the first 24 hours viewing, that is a high figure.

How many people have signed up to the subscription channel though> Is that 100% of Netflix's viewers. I still think 2.4m is a tiny amount in the whole of the potential audience. Believe it or not there are people out there who don;t have Netflix.

StormzyinaTCup · 12/12/2022 19:43

I think 'I'm a Celeb' got 11.5m viewers on the final evening which means considerably more people chose to watch Matt Hancock (and Mike Tindall) than chose to watch Prince Harry and his wife - that's gotta sting!

2.4m globally for Netflix is small considering the reach of the platform.

Cloud9isnowclosed · 12/12/2022 19:45

I'll believe their show is doing the big numbers on Netflix when I see as many tiktoks re-enacting the curtsey as I do tiktoks re-enacting the Wednesday dance "I'll dance dance dance with my hands hands hands...."

Pinkrosesbloom · 12/12/2022 19:46

Do we know who owns ‘royalty’ for H&M series?

and if DM and others ‘embed’ the trailer on their site or use photos from the series, do they have to pay royalty?

Maybe the same way Netflix got to use the Bashir video, fair use?

I have no idea, just a guess.

Penaltyshootoutfan · 12/12/2022 19:52

Netflix is huge, it’s got about 250 million subscribers, and remember subscribers are not viewers. Apparently they have another 40 percent who watch on someone else’s subscription, which takes them to 350 million. With 371 watching Wednesday I suspect the numbers are actually much higher. I’d estimate they have at least 500 million. As a lot of folks password share and don’t create a new profile.

2.4 million is a tiny percentage of their customer base, and if they can only pull that in with this series, which let’s face it is the biggie, then anything else has no chance.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/12/2022 19:54

Oh yes they will get paid for this series. Totally. Of course they will what they likely won’t get paid for is anything else. The hundred million is for the full deal so they will get a portion of it

Okay, that makes sense if they're paid for the bits of the deal they completed though not for the rest (Pearl which was cancelled, "feature films" apparently not yet available, etc.)

I wonder H&M they got proper advice and were able to pin down what they'd receive for each "portion" though - because otherwise, if PPs are right about the numbers being low, it wouldn't surprise me if Netflix tried to limit their payout

The other thing I thought was interesting was when they were talking about the engagement interview, and called it ‘reality TV’ or something, and spoke about it was scripted or whatever,

And I was thinking ‘but that last exactly what this is. It’s exactly the same’.

They both come across as having no self awareness

That part was hilarious, because Meghan’s explanation of how it was scripted was that she knew in advance they’d ask about the ring, so show the ring. Well, yeah: it’s an interview about your engagement. Of course they’ll ask about the ring. And most high-profile interviews come with questions approved in advance, PR approval, off-limits topics, and agreements about all sorts of staged stuff – like magazine cover stories where there’s a random paragraph about lipstick and you know the interview has been secured through L’Oreal. This interview was secured through the royal machine. Very few journalists have the power to interview without guidelines. You’d think she’d know how interviews work after seven years promoting Suits.

@IcedPurple he probably will become an American citizen in the next few years. And Arnie became governor (?) of California.

Lots of opportunity for meghan and/or Harry to run for political office. And probably suits them too.
I think she can handle professional criticism and rejection, after all as an actress she dealt with it ( I imagine it is much harder to deal with rejection from the family or family firm as the boundaries are all so mixed up).

and I actually think Harry would make a great politician, laid back and yet very used to being in the public eye.

C'mon, spill — how much are you being paid to do this?

I heard an American correspondent telling someone on the BBC that the Americans are watching it as a joke. MM was a minor TV personality who wasn't considered much of an actress. Everyone can see the sad, Duke-of-Windsor-like dynamics of the relationship, with H in thrall and prepared to do anything for a wife . It's car crash TV. People are watching it to laugh at them.

User3758965 · 12/12/2022 19:58

I must admit I haven't watched it because it looked a bit boring and I am in the middle of several other series on different platforms so didn't want to waste time on it

Pinkrosesbloom · 12/12/2022 20:00

@pattihews why would I be paid anything for expressing my views?

is it so terrible to wish people well and hope it all works out in the end?

pattihews · 12/12/2022 20:02

Why else would you be on a public messageboard telling us about the amazing success of the show if you weren't being paid to lie. I repeat, the Tuesday night broadcast of Emmerdale attracted 4 million people.

Bit of a difference between wishing them well and hoping they will be president 😂

Pinkrosesbloom · 12/12/2022 20:08

I thought I said mayor or governor 😀. And yes, I do wish them well. I hope they can find their peace, take care of their two babies and the security they need to keep them safe 😊

anyone else who thinks differently is welcome to their views.

I totally agree Netflix made the right decision ,was this ever in doubt? The question is was it a success for harry and Meghan . That’s much more subtle and nuanced

succes for Netflix is viewing figures, but success for harry and Meghan is not that simple , it’s also about public perception.

im not sure it’s improved their public perception, I think it’s damaged it even further. People aren’t watching as they are harry and Meghan fans, they are watching to see if they make any further outrageous accusations.

so for me this was a huge success for Netflix. And a terrible failure for harry and Meghan

Yes this is what I think too.

NF subscriber here, haven't added it to my list at all of must watch...read enough headlines about it in the daily paper.

I'm not anti royal either, I just think nothing good is going to come out of it for H & M (and the children when they are old enough) and I wonder in 5 - 10 years time if they are still happy they did this programme (apart from the money aspect). There is a price you pay that cannot be counted in money when you sell your soul...

JemimaTiggywinkles · 12/12/2022 20:18

I hadn’t really thought about it in global terms (I thought 2.4 million seemed quite good), but you’re right.

Also, I’m stuck on here talking about it because not one person I know in real life has watched it. I’ve mentioned it to a few, but mostly they’ve rolled their eyes at me for watching trashy tv. I even got an “I thought better of you than that” from my mother (a comment normally reserved for DSis watching Real Housewives).

Perhaps the next three episodes will be more sensational and therefore more watchable. The trailer makes it look likely they’ll be dishing the dirt on the royal family rather than complaining about the press.

Diverseopinions · 12/12/2022 18:15

The Royals aren't exactly protecting Prince Andrew in the press, because there is quite a lot of information related from the US and reported about what might happen in forthcoming trials etc.

He has lost all official Royal roles. Everything he officially did in his life is gone.

His mother used to speak to him and ride out with him. Well, mothers do tend to support their children - in private. He went to the Queen's funeral. Well, again it was right that he went to his own mother's funeral.

What should the Royals do to not protect him, then?

@Diverseopinions they shouldn't have paid his bill to Virginia Giuffre that ran into millions, that proves guilt. Personally he should be thrown to the lions for what he's done. He went to his mothers funeral displaying all of his medals! I thought he was stripped of everything? 🤔

Strictly Come Dancing is TVs most popular show in Britain and is watched by 743,000 people.

Multiply that by 10 and you’re in the right ball park… 🙄

Serenster · 12/12/2022 20:29

@Diverseopinions they shouldn't have paid his bill to Virginia Giuffre that ran into millions, that proves guilt.

Nope.

Georgeskitchen · 12/12/2022 20:29

Watching the new trailer it seems to me that one of their big gripes is that the British taxpayer wsnt going to pay for their round the clock protection once they left the UK and the RF
"Our security is being pulled. Everyone knows where we are"
"We need to get out of here"

Joshanddonna · 12/12/2022 20:30

It may be successful but what do they do next? They’ll need a huge amount of money to maintain their lifestyle. They’ve sold their story so what next?

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 12/12/2022 20:45

I would be shooketh if Netflix had accurate stats about our incomes, that is interesting! Wonder how they get that info
