The royal family

Are Netflix secretly playing Harry and Meghan?

H&M think they are dictating the Netflix narrative, but I wonder if Netflix are actually playing a longer game? This was billed as their story, but they are so tone deaf and are exposing themselves to ridicule with their ham fisted attempts to justify their behaviour. It's so full of ridiculous unsubstantiated statements and generalisations with no evidence to back it up. It's using stock photographs of photographers that have nothing to do with them. Why not show real photographers? A ridiculous car chase with a lone photographer on a moped provoking panic and faux fear in the couple is laughable. And as for Harry's face as Meghan takes the piss out of the queen? This was definitely seen by the editors who chose to leave it in.

Will Netflix get a double helping from this series with the candy-floss fluff that's the first airing, with a second being the dissection of this sad and deluded pair?

If you Google H&am inconsistencies you’ll be able to read them.

When something is said that really matters they may decide to comment - in the meantime, they’re right to say nothing.

Like when the Queen said nothing when Diana died?

The mother of her grandchildren died and the initial “no comment” response suggested that Diana didn’t matter.

I don’t think the royal family have a good grip on knowing what does and doesn’t matter because their modus operandi is “no comment” or “never complain, never explain”.

From that comment I’m going to assume you don’t buy new books often. I’ve noticed it’s a common marketing and sales strategy, especially for new hardbacks, where the listed price is something like “£25.00” and the bookstores or Amazon are selling it for half price to make buyers think they’re getting a bargain. But really the customers are just buying the book for its actual value.

People like to think they’re getting a bargain. Sales and marketing know this.

Meghan Markle and the Half Price Prince.

That’s actually a good title. 😂

Doesn't tend to happen with my favourite authors, I have to wait for the paperback if the library doesn't get the hardback.

I just checked on amazon and Harry's book is half price (£25 down to £12.50), one of the authors I follow has a book coming out later in January and it has a £2 discount for advance orders. Bit of a difference.

I'm hoping I might get an amazon voucher for Christmas and I'll treat myself and get the £2 discount. If that happens I then donate the book to the library as I know their budgets have been slashed.

ancientgran · 13/12/2022 15:33

Just noticed it is half price on kindle so I might get it on kindle. Shame the library will miss out.

No, not like when Diana died. Obviously.

And on that note we'll have to agree to disagree on H&M and the RF's response.

I buy lots of new books, I’ve very rarely been able to pre-order a book I’ve wanted for half price before its release, in fact I don’t recall that I ever have.

I’ve noticed grifter Jack Monroe’s latest book is also half price before it’s even out, listed on Waterstones website right next to Spare, which has amused me greatly.

Half price just means there’s a huge marketing and sales drive behind the book to make sure it gets into the charts on release. It’s part of a bigger picture strategy to quote things like “Sunday Times Bestseller” or whatever.

There was an offer online to read it free but I forgot and I no longer have a subscription.

@ancientgran ”I just checked on amazon and Harry's book is half price (£25 down to £12.50), one of the authors I follow has a book coming out later in January and it has a £2 discount for advance orders. Bit of a difference.”

Just checked. His book’s list price is much higher than I thought off the top of my head… it’s £28. Almost £30 for a debut book is a lot. The half price tag £14 is more reasonable and the real price (the half price tag is a marketing strategy to make people think they’re getting a bargain).

I can only assume your other unnamed author isn’t backed by a huge marketing and sales campaign to get them into the top of the book charts. Harry’s team are going for “Sunday Times Bestseller” because that has a longer term marketing and sales use for them.

Just checked that claim. Looks like Amazon audible had it for free… but that’s a listening books subscription service and a bit different.

I haven't watched it all yet but I think they have come across well. I have met Harry a couple of times and my partner has met him numerous times, and seen them together on several occasions. They have always been lovely and personable.

You're wrong. Read what the Gabon High Commissioner had to say if you want to know what countries in the Commonwealth today think of it. If it was colonialist and rasist why would countries like Barbados do away with the monarch as head of state to get rid of the vestiges of colonialism but stay in a structurally racist organisation?

There are lots of strategic reasons for Gabon to join the Commonwealth and speak positively about it. Joining does not disprove the presence of structural racism or unearned wealth. As for the statement its called politics.

It was to do with Amazon audible/books - join and pre order then cancel but you will still get it when released.

There are loads but if you want a Sunday Times No 1 Best seller try the new Karin Slaughter book, she writes crime thrillers. Slightly higher discount than I quoted for the other author who wasn't a Sunday Times No 1 Best Seller but at £2.40 still way below Harry's £14 (sorry I thought it was only £12.50) Her book isn't released till June but I'm sure you can find other examples.

I have no idea who orchestrates her sales campaign but she doesn't seem to need a 50% discount.

What did she do? She owned it brilliantly, went along with making a joke of it, auctioned the hat off for £80k on eBay and split the proceeds between two children charities.

Class.

Yes, that was brilliant.

Funny how no one wondered what on earth the designer was thinking!

My favourite ever comment on the hat was from a MNetter at the time which was 'It looks like she is taking her tapeworm out for a walk'.

Much much credit to the Princess for making a joke of it and having something so good come out of it all. I have complete respect for her. Plus tbh I doubt she has ever put a sartorial foot wrong since. She is really very lovely looking and well turned out. [much envy].

Aspiringmatriarch · 13/12/2022 20:01

The Earthshot book is 68% off on Amazon at the moment, if anyone is thinking of getting it.

Aspiringmatriarch · 13/12/2022 20:04

67%, sorry.

Diverseopinions · 13/12/2022 20:04

Having just watched some of this - it looks like 'Sugar and Spice and all things nice'. It looks like they have a lot of creative control of the romance bit. Not the history side and archive footage, perhaps.

I find the romance parts a bit saccharine and a bit disingenuous.

I personally don't swallow a lot of it. I don't even buy that Princess Diana made decisions 'with her heart.' It sounds good to say it. I don't think she married Prince Charles 'with her heart'. Her elder sister had dated Charles and had decided Royal life wasn't for her. I imagine Diana's head made that considered decision.

Harry comes across with emotional sincerity about his mother. It's very, very sad. I think he expresses himself simply and well, because of this. He seems to be able to get to the heart of things with his comments

Well, Meghan saying she wanted to be single when she went to Europe conflicts a bit with her asking to be paired up with a rich Englishman. The journalist who did the matchmaking said that happened.

As for doing that TV quiz: fiercest TV actress?'.

'William or Harry?'
It sounded to me like she was saying dismissively 'Oh, I don't know' like I don't care - neither.

It's all been stitched together this docusie , all the flattering pictures, all the useful snippets of footage.

Diverseopinions · 13/12/2022 20:26

It's a shame Meghan didn't like Botswana as much as Harry, as they might have had more peace and freedom from the press, if they'd settled in Africa with their children, near to their African friends - the ones who had helped him so much before.

RosettaStormer · 13/12/2022 20:41

But.. she couldn’t have her make up artist, stylist and no opportunity to wear her designer gear?? She thought she was AMAZING because she peed in a bush!

BasiliskStare · 13/12/2022 21:17

@AngelaBrazilNuts Oh that made me giggle "Sadly, her lack of these talents mean that she has bared her arse in the window of John Lewis. " Could have been a worse Christmas advert than the man in the moon

In seriousness though I think the whole everything about Meghan is racist - I don't agree & I don't like them playing on that. - I don't like the juxtaposition of eg Brexit marches to imply Britain is wholeheartedly racist - I don't like that Some are many aren't & yes some are but there are racists in the US too ) . I think some headlines ( eg Straight outta Compton were beyond the pale ) but there were also supportive headlines about her

I thought the clip in the last 3 episodes about the Commonwealth would barely have scraped a C at GCSE . & Given the jobs they were given and the veil she wore - I thought that was a bit naughty.

I feel sorry in that ( and they must and have made their own choices ) Harry's Invictus Games and other supporting of soldiers are great & one would hope he could have seen how he could have made a mark. But even he must see that the only reason he could do that was because he was Charles's son. I bet there would have been other soldiers who could have done at least as well that but the opportunity was not there for them.

To me there are just too many provable untruths which they have spouted to give me much time for them. & they with this money & Harry's inheritance have enough to live a beautiful priviledged life whilst supporting charities they care for . .

Sorry you've got a few months to wait. I didn't actually read the blurb so not sure what it's about, just that she's a crime writer. Maybe I'll preorder it if I get those amazon vouchers for Christmas.
