Harry and Meghan -- Why I dislike them BOTH

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 03/12/2022 23:02

I keep seeing threads that say everyone who dislikes the Sussexs is based on some form of racism and I wanted to put my view across. I will set the parameters of my points:

  1. Meghan absolutely did receive racist coverage from sections of the British media.
  1. I believe that there were threats to their safety by far right loons.
  2. I believe they were both unhappy as working members of the RF

However...

I still find them both very disingenuous. They highlight and speak up against the racism of others, whilst failing to address Harry's previous and documented racist behaviour. As a Jew I cannot understand how Meghan can just remain silent about her husbands former mistakes. This makes her seem untrustworthy to me and seems like she will put up with anything for money and cache, whilst arguing (rightly) that racism is totally unacceptable. He keeps saying others need to learn and he is right, but he should acknowledge that he too needed to learn, acknowledge the support needed to help others learn and offer that support to others (including his own family, if needed).

Their attitude towards the public also seems 'off' and ungrateful to me and they seem to collocate the press and the public as the same thing. There is a lot of footage of the public support for them before, during and after their wedding. Yet, apparently, they did not want the big public wedding and the 'UK' was racist towards them. Harry particularly understands the 'deal' between the monarchy and the public and ought to have explained this to Meghan, the comments re the wedding on Oprah came across as quite spiteful and tone deaf. Almost like, 'we suffered through the big wedding for the plebs.' Ditto all the strange behaviour around Archie's birth. They could have followed the Tindall's approach if they wanted to avoid press intrusion.

During financial pressures around the world they are still complaining and not acknowledging their wealth and privilege, whilst claiming to give voice to the needs of those living in poverty and suffering. The Africa interview was a prime example for both of them. It just all comes together to make them feel untrustworthy to me, and makes me dislike them. I do not wish them any ill, but I wish they would acknowledge their fortune and live private, useful lives.

Let me tell you as someone who lives in the US, that's a very bold statement for an American biracial woman to make publicly. Very. It's an own-goal, it's unintelligent, it's insulting, it's divisive, it's messed up - I could go on.

Well, it’s the experience of biracial people like Meghan who are often treated ‘better’ than darker women of colour. In NZ we call it white-passing. One of my sisters is quite light so she is white-passing and treated better than I am, often not initially being identified as Maori. I believe in America you’d refer to this as colorism. So Meghan may never have experienced some of the racist things that her mother would have, for example.

Precisely.

Her agent even talks in the Netflix series about sending her to audition for black roles, for which she was considered too "light". to be black

Meghan gave an honest assessment of where she was on race, and wrote several thoughtful essays on being mixed race.

It's why the SUITS character was perfect for her, she played a a mixed race woman with a black father and white mother.

See also Mariah Carey, Halle Berry.

Being mixed race is however not protection against racism.

As we saw in the UK.

Whaeanui · 20/04/2023 16:39

Yes it depends on the circumstances. For example, if people know my lighter siblings are Maori they’re often subject to racism too but it’s just different when you are very dark. I don’t have the same experiences as my grandmother who was full Maori, so darker than myself and my mum, either. My white family members struggle sometimes to fit in anywhere, not quite belonging or fitting neatly with either race and its cultures and experiences. There really isn’t enough discussion on being biracial.

I have adult DDs. They don't keep themselves to themselves. They stand up to be counted in very many ways.

My nieces the same @Roussette I wouldn't dream of telling them to keep themselves to themselves. They would think I was a bit loony if I did: they are encouraged and supported to step out with confidence, my mother says the same to my boys her grandchildren walk with confidence, I tell my nieces the same. One of them is a model - she could have been something else but for now she is a successful
model and loves it. She knows the industry and is often sidelined for white or fairer skinned but she continues and will only stop when she has had enough. It would crush her if she was told to keep herself to herself.

Meghan has always looked mixed race rather than white to me. I don't know ho these people are who think she could pass as white.

purpledalmation · 20/04/2023 19:09

Thank you MNHQ for deleting MrsmaxD's personal attack on me. It's unacceptable and I hope it ends here.

Roussette · 20/04/2023 19:14

Why bring it up then, just let it drop will you

Honestly don't worry about it.

To paraphrase Paul Simon, we know what we know.

Onwards and upwards.

Haven't you read the many many posts on this board. Various claims they didn't even know she was mixed race before the engagement.

purpledalmation · 20/04/2023 19:27

Its always good to call out bad behaviour, I find.

Yes, I've read that many a time. I often find it's an excuse to be honest.

When there is a mosquito buzzing around I try and ignore it, even if I feel like rolling a newspaper and squatting it!

You jinxed me! Was just sitting outside and a mosquito buzzed by ...😆

No need for the pile-on. It is not fair to GreenDalmatian.

Sudeko · 20/04/2023 19:46

Sorry, i mean PurpleDalmatian

To quote an often repeated phrase, I don't care whether a Dalmatian is purple, orange, green or polka-dotted.

All Dalmatians are equal in my eyes.

Especially the polka-dotted ones ... 🤗

Gosh, I could have sworn a poster on here yesterday was causing a ruckus over needing their own special place on MN where they could have 'sane discussions' and not have to put up with gossip, vitriol and personal attacks. Is this the type of 'sane' discussion you had in mind?

What with the personal digs and talk of extra marital affairs by said same poster and others on the last two pages I'm wondering now whether the request for their own space was a thinly disguised attempt at an area where they could bitch and moan unchallenged.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 20/04/2023 20:20

@Partyandbullshit

Another poster wrote similar sentiments to you on another thread, I'm not sure which one but you could look at the responses there if you are interested

Whaeanui · 20/04/2023 20:22

Thank you to MNHQ for removing the personal attack on MrsMaxDeWinter by Dalmatian. Calling a black woman angry was a step too far for me. Especially when she is nothing of the sort. Now hopefully that really will be the end of it.

StormzyinaTCup · 20/04/2023 20:29

Christ, it's like a bloody playground in here.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 20/04/2023 20:33

Thank you @Whaeanui.

Tomorrow, as Scarlet O'Hara said, is another day.

Partyandbullshit · 20/04/2023 20:33

Wow. I just went out for a lunch and this has descended into quite a personal thing. Not my thing, really, so I'll leave this where it is. Not dismissing any of the non-personal stuff, just don't want to get bogged down in all the rest. I appreciated being able to say what I think, though!

Agree @Partyandbullshit

I'm enjoying the 'sane discussion' this evening, consisting on the regurgitating of the same deletion just to be able to have the last word and the silly digs about mosquitos and dogs, it's all a bit well 'waagghh' really.

Hopefully the grown ups will be back in the building tomorrow.

Have a good evening everyone.

orangedalmatian · 20/04/2023 21:23

@StormzyinaTCup Nah. This grown up has better things to do. 😀😂

Harry himself said he thought she looked white on one of his interviews. You can message him and ask how?

Gothambutnotahamster · 20/04/2023 22:34

She also auditioned for white roles and had it listed as an ethnicity she could play on her acting CV (as well as Asian & Mediterranean from what I read at the time).

She also said that at school she had to listen to racist comments as people assumed she was white and didn't realise she was mixed race, so I thought it was widely accepted that she could 'pass' for multiple ethnicities.
