Harry and Meghan -- Why I dislike them BOTH

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 03/12/2022 23:02

I keep seeing threads that say everyone who dislikes the Sussexs is based on some form of racism and I wanted to put my view across. I will set the parameters of my points:

  1. Meghan absolutely did receive racist coverage from sections of the British media.
  1. I believe that there were threats to their safety by far right loons.
  2. I believe they were both unhappy as working members of the RF

However...

I still find them both very disingenuous. They highlight and speak up against the racism of others, whilst failing to address Harry's previous and documented racist behaviour. As a Jew I cannot understand how Meghan can just remain silent about her husbands former mistakes. This makes her seem untrustworthy to me and seems like she will put up with anything for money and cache, whilst arguing (rightly) that racism is totally unacceptable. He keeps saying others need to learn and he is right, but he should acknowledge that he too needed to learn, acknowledge the support needed to help others learn and offer that support to others (including his own family, if needed).

Their attitude towards the public also seems 'off' and ungrateful to me and they seem to collocate the press and the public as the same thing. There is a lot of footage of the public support for them before, during and after their wedding. Yet, apparently, they did not want the big public wedding and the 'UK' was racist towards them. Harry particularly understands the 'deal' between the monarchy and the public and ought to have explained this to Meghan, the comments re the wedding on Oprah came across as quite spiteful and tone deaf. Almost like, 'we suffered through the big wedding for the plebs.' Ditto all the strange behaviour around Archie's birth. They could have followed the Tindall's approach if they wanted to avoid press intrusion.

During financial pressures around the world they are still complaining and not acknowledging their wealth and privilege, whilst claiming to give voice to the needs of those living in poverty and suffering. The Africa interview was a prime example for both of them. It just all comes together to make them feel untrustworthy to me, and makes me dislike them. I do not wish them any ill, but I wish they would acknowledge their fortune and live private, useful lives.

@Shelefttheweb
Oh yes I see what you’re saying.
I was thinking more of PP allowing the general public a glimpse inside the monarchy.
The televising of the coronation and setting up the Dof E scheme.

Shaking hands with people during war time when their houses have been bombed and staying in your home city as the monarch are the least the public should expect.

And that’s how you end up with things like Harry thinking it was OK to use racial slurs about his army colleagues. His Grandma was the boss. No one could get rid of him. So people (including those being subjected to racist insults) had to pretend to themselves that it was kind of OK

I agree Bernard. And this is just my own personal opinion, but Harry has seemed to grow in understanding of racial issues, and learned from those serious errors. I believe in second chances. I kind of expect he will address his earlier racist behaviour in his book. I will be disappointed if he does not.

Yes. I thought I'd read that.

So it seems rather like Princess Di being enthusiastic about countryside pursuits, when she first met Charles - laughing her way through the mud, as reports suggest. Later, she didn't want to go to Highgrove and preferred London life to country living. Looks like a similar pattern with Meghan. Romance spoke loudly..... then her more established preferences took a hold.

I expect 'wanting to protect my family' is a way of saying ' making my wife feel comfortable by doing what SHE wants, so her mental health can be good as she raises our family.'

Realistically speaking, what happened after Botswana and with the Africa plan is no different to girlfriends donning padded jackets and scarves, and cheering on their boyfriend's Sunday League football performance from the sideline and then deciding they don't like watching that much, once the relationship heads towards engagement, and that they can't stand the World Cup, once Baby Number One comes along. Romance makes all sorts of things seem enticing, in its first flush. I remember volunteering to do the cricket scoring at my mixed comprehensive, because I fancied one of the boys - so guilty myself.

I think it shows that Meghan is not genuinely that keen on doing good in the world, or she'd have made more of that major international role, and would have thought of herself as a roving person of influence. It was a big opportunity. Still, it is only the same as many other partners, so not surprising.

Nothing on earth would persuade me to read Harry’s book. I don’t get enough reading time as it is and there are about 167,456 books I’d read first. Plus, contrary to the opinion of a number of thread ploppers, I have no intention of knowingly adding to H&M’s coffers. But I will certainly read the threads about it here with interest

At the local library where I volunteer there is only 1 person on the waiting list to borrow it .

I don’t have to buy it, I’m already on library reservation list for it. But apparently we can only have a copy for a week as it’s in demand. I’ll be waiting about a month (as long as everyone does the right thing and returns them after a week). I like a good memoir - hope it is.The actual writer is very good, I got to read a chapter online of The Tender Bar - one of the books the author has written. It was really good, and my library is going to order it in, so I can read it all.

To be fair if it’s decently written I expect it’ll be fascinating

his world is so completely removed from that of any normal person

Readinginthesun · 05/12/2022 10:13

I suppose it depends if it’s THE truth or HIS truth .
Agree that the actual writer is excellent .

RaRaRaspoutine · 05/12/2022 10:18

Luckily(?) none of the royal family cares what we think of them. There are worse people in there than H&M.

Grantanow · 05/12/2022 10:32

Over-entitled so-called celebrities trying to cash in on people. Daily Wail today shows their film fakes a photo of their being press hounded using a photo from 5 years before they met.

3peassuit · 05/12/2022 10:38

I think the other royals are doing what is often advised on Mumsnet and greyrocking them. The more they whinge on unchallenged, the more ridiculous they seem.

Diverseopinions · 05/12/2022 10:51

It's possible that 'Nobody's asked if I'm all right' could have meant: nobody has asked if I want to settle on the African Continent.

At that stage, maybe it wasn't the Royals being unpleasant, but rather the prospect of a hastily conceived plan, which officials had maybe worked on without her ' curatature.

I agree - let them stand in their monologue and everyone with them have their eyes trained on them and see them for what they are.

Never dialogue with these types - don’t get in their way….

Its all eroding away slowly.

They do not have the support or connections within US A list society that they hoped.

Even the left leaning high brow US media has reported negatively on their behaviours.

Most of the public can read and judge directly their motivations and tone through all of the direct “unfiltered” content that H&M issue directly to the public rather than be influenced by gross negative tabloid or social media.

People will make up their own minds and the tide has turned against them.

The most common comment that people have expressed is that they were welcomed , seen as a breath of fresh air - modern, sexy, stylish - but in time they have shown themselves to be bitter, entitled, delusion and grandiose - which is unpalatable for many.

Sagharbor · 05/12/2022 11:20

What a bizarre thought, one formed just by watching them on TV?!

Embarrassing is an understatement...

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 05/12/2022 11:38

I don’t normally venture outside FWR. All these people who are embarrassed by other posters having a chat are a bit of a new one on me

do you often try to shame others because the things they say make you uncomfortable?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/12/2022 11:54

It's not like Garbus is making the documentary independently. She's making it under their instruction over content

Worth remembering if the general reaction to the 6 parter isn't to their taste ...

None at all at mine, though TBF it's closed this week (maintenance issue) and for all I know there may be hordes clamouring at the door

There'll be one in the queue eventually though, and that'll be me ... lowed if I'm spending good money on the thing

It’s called bullying with the attempt to silence discussion thru trying to shame and humiliate posters with a different opinion.

Its easy to report though to MNHQ under “personal attacks” - the same posters get regularly deleted - @MrsMaxDeWinter even escalated this to racism and misogyny yesterday and it was swiftly removed.

It’s so controlling

trying to control things that are essentially harmless and moreover eminently ignorable must be so exhausting

some people do like to make their own lives more difficult don’t they?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/12/2022 12:05

I was just coming on to see if anyone had mentioned the new update about their documentary and can see someone has linked it above!

But that’s the issue, it was made with the content they provided yes, but before the queen died and from not long after they left it started, they signed it very early on.

The issue now is they want to pull back and remove much of that content and Netflix have told them to jog on. They’ve no control. It’s the same with the book. They deemed whatever attacks and accusations that are coming were just and righteous at the time, but now want it pulled back as there will be a back lash, either against them or the royals, or I guess both, but from what I’ve read they think they will get the back lash themselves. And they can’t pull it back

so completely their fault, they did it, they said it.and they cannot unsay it. This is their issue. They can’t unsay what we are all about to hear and read.

the other issue Netflix apparently faces is they checked the content against what harry said in the book and harry was saying different things in both about the same events, so they had to rework it. The whole thing has been a rumoured nightmare.

it was supposed to be an insight into them at home. So like reality tv and they even tried apparently to have it all scripted so they would be like actors. Rumour has it Netflix are going to try to bin them off. Her podcasts are floundering, content has already been cancelled , it’s just an all round shit show, which isn’t going to get better with them now managing Archewell either as they don’t have the skill set.
