Awful story just broken on twitter about horrendous racist questioning from Lady Hussey to Ngozi Fulani from Sister Space at yesterdays VAWG event.

Lady Hussey has resigned.

Can you imagine someone going on the feminist board and suggesting the women have a quiet word in the ear of anyone "offending" them with their misogyny?

Yeah but it’s actually your fault for starting the thread though?

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 15:08

@ShirleyPhallus Are you being sarcastic? Or suggesting that other people posting racism is my fault for starting a thread?

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 15:09

And point of fact - I did not start this thread.

I was being sarcastic in response to the post @ you of 14.37 saying “why do you encourage all these racist people by constantly starting threads”

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 15:12

@ShirleyPhallus I did not say that. I challenged that.

Well no, this is Mums net after all. But neither does everything have to be shouted from the rooftops either. There is a balance somewhere.

Read the thread from thigh mistress at 1437 saying that you starting threads encourages racism. I was being pointing out that starting a thread in feminism that then blames the OP is ridiculous. Was in support of you!

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 15:16

@ShirleyPhallus Sorry!!

Oh, they do. FWR is full of MRAs telling its posters they are not 'womaning' properly, and that actually, misogyny doesn't happen and it's really the case that they all hate men. Same rhetoric, different 'ism'.

You'll never see me on the Black Mumsnetters' board, because whilst I support those members in their stand against racism, I recognise that that board is not for me. I don't experience the same prejudice those members do every single day of their lives. But some people just can't resist 'plopping', I think is what they call it.

What happened on your thread in feminism?

Well we've travelled a bit and pretty much everywhere we've been there have been questions about where we come from and is that where our parents came from. And I've never thought it racist.

As has been explained before, there is a huge difference between asking an international visitor where they are from and asking a citizen of the country where they are from. Ngozi Fulani was born in the U.K. She was located in the U.K. when the conversation (interrogation) occurred, probing her on where she's "really" from. The two situations are not in any way equivalent.

Some PPs on this thread keep insisting that the questioner didn't intend to be racist. Leaving aside the fact that no one here can know what was in her mind, it really doesn't matter. Racism is racism even if it comes from someone who "never meant any harm."

I'm pretty sure MNHQ can block IP addresses, which would also block reregistering, so why don't they?

I have a dynamic IP like many in the UK.

It resets every week if I do nothing.

I use to be able to reset it myself by rebooting my router.

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 17:39

Resetting your IIP I thought was recommended for security?

@antelopevalley Over the last few days, it’s honestly started to feel like that. Like we should just bugger off for the sake of our mental health and let them have a racist love in.

Anyway, books for people who wish to inform themselves (I shan’t hold my breath):

  • Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo Lodge.
  • Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire by Akala.
  • Brit(ish): On Race, Identity and Belonging by Afua Hirsch

Surely you would've had to have been living under a rock to have not heard of at least one of these books, especially since the events of 2020? I've lost count of the number of lists I've seen of anti-racist books and articles.

You’d think so, wouldn’t you?

@Namechangedforthisonetoday That is what I had seen happening before. And the peace and love comment from MNHQ on a thread with lots of racism just made me wonder if they themselves are a bit clueless about racism.

Yes, the ‘peace and love’ comment was a doozy.

news.sky.com/story/lady-susan-hussey-and-ngozi-fulani-have-meeting-filled-with-warmth-and-understanding-12769462

Lady Susan Hussey and Ngozi Fulani have had a meeting where Lady S offered her sincere apologies and the distress they caused her.

They have both now asked to be “left in peace to rebuild their lives in the wake of an immensely distressing period for them both".

Saucery · 16/12/2022 17:19

That’s very generous of Ngozi Fulani.

PatientZorro · 16/12/2022 17:27

An outbreak of understanding and forgiveness, will wonders never cease! Yes that was gracious of Ngozi Fulani and I’m sorry she copped so much flak over this.

Now, are there any other troublesome relationships in royal circles where an honest discussion, some humility and goodwill might help? 🤨

Talia99 · 16/12/2022 17:38

Saucery · 16/12/2022 17:19

That’s very generous of Ngozi Fulani.

Bearing in mind Ms. Fulani had to scale back her charity work and that of Sistah Space due to the abuse she was getting online and was apparently reported to the charity commission for ‘grant misuse’ by some random online troll (who almost definitely had no idea one way or the other) all accompanied by deafening silence from Buckingham palace (other than when they said they’d spoken to her and it turned out they hadn’t), I’m not sure it’s generosity so much as just wanting it to all go away.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/12/2022 17:58

I actually have sympathy with the Palace. Lady SH's racism to NF really fucked up this and other high profile RF events scheduled at that time. They dealt with it as quickly and effectively as they could.Xmas Smile

What has kept this going have been the racists who insist that it didn't happen.Xmas Hmm

AnnunciataZ · 16/12/2022 18:04

I'm glad to hear there's been a resolution to this.

As for the racists on this thread who've sought to minimise racism and discredit Ngozi, we see you and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I agree and it’s ironic. If Ms. Fulani had received unanimous public support, it would have been one old lady, not kept up with the times, very sad, quickly shuffled out of sight (please note, I don’t think that’s any sort of excuse but I think it would have worked, particularly with H & M’s latest antics diverting attention).

Instead all the ‘it’s not racist’ escalation by outsiders in the press and on social media and the ‘it so is’ responses, plus the abuse Ms. F was subjected to have kept the whole thing going.
