Awful story just broken on twitter about horrendous racist questioning from Lady Hussey to Ngozi Fulani from Sister Space at yesterdays VAWG event.

Lady Hussey has resigned.

@RosettaStormer

She was formerly a lady in waiting to the Queen and since the accession of Charles was a Lady of the Household.

Both the old position of Lady in Waiting and the newly styled Lady of the Household are honorary positions within the Court. Ladies occupying these honorary positions were chosen because they were aristocrats, known to the Queen. Camilla has chosen a few old friends to support her in her new role and she inherited three of the Queen's Ladies in Waiting.

Literally all they do is accompany the monarch on trips to open supermarkets or whatever, and help mingle and chat at Palace receptions. That is why SH was at the reception.

Ah! I didn’t realise she was one of the women chosen by Camilla as Lady of the Household.
I did know she was formerly a Lady in Waiting and understand how they are chosen and what they do.
I think trotting along behind the Queen holding her flowers is quite different from being part of a reception party for representatives of charities. She clearly had no clue how to interact with representatives of a charity in a professional capacity. If she is so crass in the way she deals with people, I do wonder why Camilla chose her.

Camilla was probably "advised" in who she should appoint.

It’s honestly wild. There will be no rational explanation, either.

I’ve basically had enough and I’m just going to call them out on this nonsense. Every time. If they ban me, they ban me.

If you're threatened with this, I hope you will post somewhere prominent and say so.

I would no longer want to be a member of a site that bans PoC for robustly challenging racism. Nor would it do their site branding any favours whatsoever.

It's very unfortunate that there are some horrors around here who constantly bandy around the attitude that the most repulsive racist behaviour can be dismissed as somehow innocuous, and who expend a great deal of energy openly attacking and insulting those who don't accept their apologism. Cf. the comments upthread about racism from members of the royal family. There's at least one name I recognise from similar behaviour in the past. Frankly, I'm amazed they are still a member.

Or would have been, until threads of a particular tone started appearing last week.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 21:17

You would not be the first WOC to be banned for calling out racism every time.

They also attend events and make chit chat so that they can discreetly advise The Queen interesting anecdotes . I was at an event years ago and saw it happening.

Can't you accept that LH was out of line and is a racist and the RF do have them in the family and rather than acknowledging and dealing with it - you make excuses for them. If it wasn't this event it would have been elsewhere and between the senior royals and life the timing of when they are caught / exposed is really up to them. The sooner they sort this out the less likely it is to embarrass them on an important occasion. time will tell and again people will be in denial with excuses as embarrassing as this one.

Part of the issue seems to have been that LH touched Ngozi’s hair which is a no- no and she clearly needs educated .
As does Harry .

Yeah notice how all the people claiming that Ms Fulani didn't behaviour appropriately, blatantly ignored LH touched a woman she didn't know hair uninvited.

Readinginthesun · 06/12/2022 10:33

As did Harry

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 10:34

@Readinginthesun do you think Lady SH was racist?

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 10:34

@Readinginthesun do you think Lady SH was racist?

Well , I wasn’t there but based on ( the surprising detailed) reported conversation I would say that she needs to be educated on some race issues . The apparent comment about “ your people” wasn’t good . Touching anyone’s hair uninvited is not good .
Racist ? I don’t honestly know . According to a ( black) representative of her church - 90% black congregation, LH doesn’t have a racist bone in her body .
I don’t think Ngozi covered herself in glory . She has numerous tweets denouncing the RF, accusing them of Domestic Violence against MM , stating that MM wasn’t allowed on the balcony as she is black ( Andrew too was banned) plus a video of her telling school kids she never wears traditional clothes suggests to me that she went to BP with an agenda . Why go to an event held by people you despise ?
She said she was left standing at the periphery despite photos of her chatting to Camilla and others in a crowded room.
So , to answer your question ( sorry , I do tend to waffle) I hesitate to shout racism but I do think LH was tactless.
I know I will now be piled on but that’s my view.

F4chrissakes · 06/12/2022 11:08

Uninvited touching of any person is definitely off, no excuse for that. Drove my blonde kids nuts when we went somewhere where apparently touching blonde hair is lucky.
I think the upper classes refer to "your people" meaning your family.

Yes ‘your people’ means family in the upper classes. It is a very loaded term though. Basically , ‘what stock are you from and are you good enough for me to bother with. ‘

it does seem there was an agenda there though. LH was out of order in what she said and how she behaved however. Such an elderly lady maybe should be ‘retired’ and a new guard brought in. C and C need to modernise the monarchy desperately.

Now that’s interesting. I didn’t know about touching blond hair being lucky . I have a little DGD with beautiful blond curly hair and both DD and I weren’t too happy about the number of people trying to touch her hair when we were on holiday - overseas- in the summer . We didn’t say anything , just moved her away.

F4chrissakes · 06/12/2022 11:14

Well, Lady H has stood down, so she is retired anyway. As to modernising the monarchy, isn't that what Harry and Meghan said they were going to do?

RosettaStormer · 06/12/2022 11:18

Its for Charles to modernise the monarchy. He is the King.

Morestrangethings · 06/12/2022 11:33

More like no class.

The ‘upper classes’ need to smarten up then, and realise it’s no longer acceptable because it means something else as well.

the ‘upper classes’ ffs. That’s a term that should no longer exist.

F4chrissakes · 06/12/2022 11:34

I'm sure we all understand that obvious name calling and stuff is wrong, but is it racist for dark skinned people to touch blonde haired kids? Me, I don't think so. An invasion of personal space yes, but racist no.
Is it racist to ask where someone comes from, and where their family come from? Depends on the circumstances. On holiday abroad probably not.

RosettaStormer · 06/12/2022 11:36

I think it’s intrusively personal . Would a white person have been asked such a question? No of course they wouldn’t.

Oh they may well have been at one of these functions involving actual meet and greet staff. The whole point of them is to say hello who are you, where do you come from etc.

Nice pic posted earlier of Harry touching, no no, stroking someone's hair seemingly uninvited, are we outraged by that?

F4chrissakes · 06/12/2022 12:01

Well we've travelled a bit and pretty much everywhere we've been there have been questions about where we come from and is that where our parents came from. And I've never thought it racist.

Same here . When DGD’s blond hair was being touched it never occurred to me or DD that the people were being racist ! We just felt they were overstepping.

Rhondaa · 06/12/2022 12:06

Lovely to read the church LG goes to has a 90% black congregation. It would be an odd choice if she was a racist wouldnt it?!

Rhondaa · 06/12/2022 12:06

LH*

AnnunciataZ · 06/12/2022 12:15

ThighMistress · 06/12/2022 12:20

Prince Harry commented on Serena Williams’s hairdo. He didn’t just say, “I like your new hairdo” , he called it a “vibe” Hmm .

ime, not excusing Lady Susan Hussey, but that prodding questioning was an early indicator of mil’s dementia. Having no experience of it, we all thought she was getting darn rude, but it is typical of the disease: no filter. Mil would ask an unwelcome question, and instead of backing off when the reply was less than forthcoming, she would persist and persist.
