Rumour that the King won't make Edward Duke of Edinburgh

Allegedly as part of the King's desire for a slimmed down monarchy.

I would have thought that the Royal Family could really do with the Wessexes as working royals. If they slim down so far in a few years they'll soon beonly the Cambridges available.

I think it just meant that they knew George was a boy so they didn't need to try that hard Grin

Doubt it, Letters Patent issued December 2012. Goerge borm Jult 2013.

I don't think anyone would reliably know the sex that early on

I suspect that this has all been discussed behind the scenes and that Edward is fine with it. And that this was probably hashed out ages ago while the Queen, if not Prince Philip as well, was alive. The brothers might have agreed privately yonks ago, even though giving Edward Duke of Edinburgh was a nice idea it does have its downsides. Edward strikes me as sensible and self-effacing and not particularly limelight-seeking, although I am sure he does want to be given his dues in terms of respect. I suspect Edward might get a different Dukedom instead, announced before the coronation. If he wants one, he might prefer to stay as an Earl. Any Dukedom, and the title Duke of Edinburgh in particular, might be thought to be burdensome for his son who is being brought up to be an aristocratic but standard working person, not a Working Royal. Edward is likely going to become a Counsellor of State (again) and have quite a high profile in Charles's reign and I suspect some of William's as well, and this may well be enough for him.

I think she's right to point out that Charles removing a title from the first family member of colour would be a questionable decision

He didn’t though. The first family member of colour (in the senior, working royals rank I mean - there was a full-blooded Māori man in the Gloucester family for several years ) was Meghan herself. And she was given the titles of HRH the Duchess of Sussex, and the Countess of Dumbarton upon her marriage to Prince Harry. Having welcomed her so openly, it seems a little unlikely that Charles would then turn around and decide that his her child’s mixed race would mean he wouldn’t be given the title of Prince.

SenecaFallsRedux · 29/11/2022 20:06

Another consideration is that making Edward Duke of Edinburgh with remainder to his heirs would likely mean that the title could be held for a very long time by someone with little connection to Scotland

Tontostitis · 29/11/2022 20:26

I wish we could have Royal discussions without the Montecito Moaners being brought up 🙁

Novella4 · 29/11/2022 20:47

@Serenster

Your response is disingenuous
Your argument is based on Chuck refusing a title to Meghan when she married Harry

Even Chalres has to make some attempt to hide his hand

LadyMarmaladeAtkins · 29/11/2022 21:15

there was no mention or discussion around the notion that it would only be until they were adults

But there didn't need to be. It just was what it was, and IIRC Sophie, in a fairly recent interview (but before the Queen died) said that Louise would choose when she was 18 what if any title to use or not use, including Princess. For reasons already given, there have been some statements about Louise, but that is mostly because she was coming of age. Louise is still in education at the moment so may be deferring making any statement on the matter, or may have no desire to actually use the title. She still IS a princess, even if she doesn't style herself that way.

Charles was playing a very long game then, was he, when he let it be widely reported at the Queen’s 2012 Jubilee that he favoured a slimmed down Royal family for the future, and only had himself, his wife and his sons and his one daughter in law appear on the balcony with the Queen then?

If you fast forward that model 25 years, should Charles celebrate a 25th jubilee (unlikely, obviously, but…) the balcony for that would be Charles, Camilla, William, Kate and their children only.

Clever of Charles to set all that up several years before Harry even met Meghan.

@Serenster Chalres talks a lot of old rot

Says he wants to 'slim down' the monarchy then INCREASES the number of councillors of state ...
Awkward when you have a sec offender as a councillor of state ..

He has done that to avoid H and A being used . Very sensible and less bother than going through the process of actually removing 2 people who are totally unsuitable. If either of them had any decency they would have removed themselves.

Except the two counsellors are already working royals. So he's increased nothing.

Nonsense ! There was never any hint that M wouldn’t have a title . Even she has never suggested that . Even if the Sussex part is removed ( which it should be) then she will still be Princess Henry .

Novella4 · 29/11/2022 21:59

@Readinginthesun take it up with serenster . It was her point

How on earth can they 'remove themselves' when it has to go through Parliament and the HoL?

It was debated in the HoL to remove Harry and Andrew but then the bill was withdrawn. Harry has no control over that!

They could ask to be removed and it would happen just as a Monarch can Abdicate .
No one can make them CoS against their will .

No, you hinted that Meghan might have been denied a title .

No I hinted that Charles will try to hide his hand NOW

That's interesting and I presume you know that for a fact?

Imagine Harry asked to be removed but Andrew didn't want to be removed. So it's brought up in a bill in the HoL that Harry be removed but..be as the can of worms of leaving the disgraced member of the RF as a CoS, the bill is rejected

I'm happy to be corrected if you know different. Imagine the outcry on here if he chose that course of action because let's face it, whatever Harry does is wrong.
He's much better leaving it as it is and Charles bringing others in above him.
