The royal family

Harry and Meghan - lies?

1000 replies

FurAndFeathers · 28/10/2022 19:51

Ok I’m keeping my fingers crossed this thread will not descend into an unsubstantiated bun fight! Please bear with me.

I’m definitely no Royalist, and am pretty ambivalent about H and M but from the little I’ve read they seem to have been treated pretty badly. However I keep seeing on other threads here that their claims have all be proven to be lies, which would make me much less sympathetic to them. But I can’t find any verification for this.

So I’m asking more knowledgeable posters - what lies specifically have H&M told and where’s the evidence to the contrary please?

thank you

I haven’t noticed it much of this (Sophie was Rhys Jones before marriage by the way) but referring to a person by only their surname after the first mention is the norm under most style guides for writing - see Wikipedia’s for a current example of this (“After the initial mention, a person should generally be referred to by surname only”). So it’s not something that applies only to the Duchess of Sussex.

But is Markle her surname? Did she not change it with marriage?

OP posts:
Serenster · 30/12/2022 20:55

So... on the royal threads I can refer to Catherine, Princess of Wales as Middleton? Is that correct?

If Meghan, married to Harry is called Markle. And they are called Harkles?

Yes, if the first time you referred to her in a post you gave her full name (or title) then it would not be inappropriate to then refer to her as Middleton. (I know it’s not a name she herself uses any more but its a still a name by which she is commonly known, so I won’t split hairs here).

Why is it rude? We often refer to Kate Middleton, as well. They're their names after all. It's not like they're ashamed of them and I bet Meghan would use that name if she returned to acting.

The idea that I'd be insulted if someone used my maiden name is very weird to me.

That's not the point.

She was referred to as 'Markle' on here.

We don't refer to Kate as 'Middleton' do we?

It would be rude and derogatory. But appears it's OK for Meghan.

What we do know factually is it’s always ever been about the ££££££.

If they stayed they wanted to make more
£££££.

They left and then complained they didn’t get any ££££££.

Then the sold their privacy, children, integrity for lots of ££££££.

What? They sold their children???
really??

See my comment above about splitting hairs!

In Meghan’s case she seems to be happy having Meghan Markle used to describe herself - see the quote below from the recent Variety article that was written with her full co-operation - so I am assuming it is also okay here.

That morning, the Duchess of Sussex, known more commonly by her maiden name, Meghan Markle, sped past a group of 60-something women who’d made the trek to Montecito to celebrate a milestone birthday.

you might not mind if someone can’t be bothered to get your name right or chooses to call you be your maiden name as a passive-aggressive way of signalling that you aren’t really part of that family.

but that doesn’t make it any less rude

Are we allowed to call her “M”?

There is no problem with calling her Meghan or Meghan Markle? Why are you ignoring what I am saying?

She has been called 'Markle' on here as I keep saying.

Can you imagine me calling Catherine (or Kate) 'Middleton'? It is rude and derogatory. Why do I keep having to repeat myself... no idea.

So they don’t call her Meghan Markle, they simply explain that she’s more commonly known by that name (which she would be as she acted under it for years).

She seems quite happy to be known as Meghan Markle in the variety article. Many women today feel no need to change their names upon marriage. We are independent women after all.

Absolutely. That’s why I asked the question

I think I am wading through treacle here.

Meghan. Or Meghan Markle. Fine.

Just calling her 'Markle' is very rude. There is a post on here knocking her saying 'Markle does care about Prince and Princess titles etc'.

Rude.

It’s really common - honestly! Part of most newspaper style guides. See here for an example I found from the Guardian just now:

The Conservative party can still win the next general election if it shows the public it is on their side, Theresa May has said….Since leaving office, May has not been above criticising her own party.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/dec/26/theresa-may-says-conservatives-can-still-rebuild-reputation-to-win-next-election

(I guess it sounds unusual as Royals are more commonly referred to by their titles not their surnames/maiden names but it’s perfectly normal written usage).

I am not talking about politicians. I am talking about on here. About Royals. About royal threads. About Meghan. About Kate.

If it's 'perfectly normal' you use it on royal threads about Kate and see where that gets you... Hmm

Samcro · 30/12/2022 21:13

Oh come on you know I meant on here.
she gets called markle on this very thread.

Samcro · 30/12/2022 21:13

And I mean just markle, not Meghan markle.

It might be newspaper style guides but it’s not common in MN is it?

no one calls Harry just ‘Windsor’ or William ‘Wales’

OP posts:
Serenster · 30/12/2022 21:19

Thank you Roussette, but i a perfectly happy with my current posting style, which so far as I’m aware isn’t intentionally rude to anyone.😄

It seems a very strange thing to get het up about, given some of the rude names many of the Royals get called, but so be it.

Serenster · 30/12/2022 21:20

Now you are just being ridiculous - self-evidently neither of those would be enough by themselves to distinguish either man.

How many other ‘Wales’ and ‘Windsors’ are there? (Apart from the children which even posters on MN tend to be nice about.)

@Serenster

it sidetracks from the posts about it being all the money for the Sussex’s - it’s a load of cobblers
