Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

Not a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth over this royal book either. I guess reporters like Hugo Vickers don't mind when they're getting a slice of the pie.

next we’ll be told that a ‘peoples choice nomination’ is better than the Nobel prize 🤣

There's a Nobel prize for podcasts? 😜

Ohnonevermind · 03/11/2022 15:53

They probably got the award three days earlier just for themselves - not a lot of people know that 😉

Bovrilly · 03/11/2022 16:37

Not sure that a 17 year old article about Edward which includes the line "He was careful not to discuss personal details of any members of his family" is the best comparison to draw 😂

BlueRidge · 05/11/2022 09:08

@tatala , "When I look at the mockery and expectations the press set for the Sussexes, I am so proud of where they are now."

Why are you proud? How does it reflect on you? Their success (or otherwise) has nothing to do with you.

None of us were there so don't really know but a fair bit of what MM has said has not been true. However I hope they can move away from feeling sorry for themselves and cross about loads of things and just lead happy lives and involve both grandfathers in the lives of the children.

Well put

AutumnCrow · 05/11/2022 11:40

The Obama's clout wasn't enough for Spotify to renew their contracts so I'm not that fussed about it.

Oh give over, @tatala - that article you linked to yourself shows this clearly isn't the case, and that it was about the Obamas' values not 'aligning' with Spotify's. The Obamas wanted to push other people and voices forward under their Higher Ground banner, whereas Spotify wanted them out more front and centre and they declined to keep being the stars of the show under the spotlights (so to speak).

I find it odd the way "I'm proud of xyz" is used now. It seems to be getting a new meaning.
Eg the judges on Strictly will say they're "proud" of a competitor's progress, when I'd use "impressed by" or something.
I can see the professional teaching them might be proud of them but the judges aren't personally invested in the same way.

I wonder when Meghan will declare Harry her spare? Won't be long now. She'll be much better off without this moping man. She's beautiful, sophisticated and ambitious, he's holding her back.

So who held her back for the previous 30+ years ? We all know she is ambitious but she hadn’t exactly made it before meeting Harry !

Coronateachingagain · 05/11/2022 14:44

Eel in my book, she has not "made it" yet. She is getting a lot wealthier at the moment, thanks to her connections

What with the children being the grandchildren of the King of the United Kindom and all that, in the event of a separation where would they live and go to school if Harry decided he wants to take them back to their marital home at Frogmore Cottage, and Charles agrees to foot all the legal bills to 'out gun' Meghan?

God, can you imagine the media circus. And the blame game.

I rather imagine Meghan might be stuck with Harry until she's 57.

Would never happen. The Lilibet is a US citizen, and Archie hasn’t lived in the UK since he was a few months old.

With the dc firmly established in the US, all of them living in California (50/50 financial split if they divorce), and Harry telling everyone how emotionally damaged he is, he would be lucky to get supervised visitation rights. Meghan has Harry right where she wants him.

Isn't Meghan herself on the record though as having been suicidal? I remember thinking at the time, be careful what you say - it'll be used against you one day my dear by a very powerful family if they so choose.

A poster on here absolutely ages ago posted something interesting about the (monarch) King Charles having privileges over royal children. But I think they have to be in the UK for those legal privileges to be exercised. The whole system is absolutely barkingly anachronistic.

Like I said, it would be a massive media circus whichever way the cookie crumbled. I think she's kind of shackled.

Croque · 05/11/2022 17:28

I think they will probably maintain the whole farce for a few more years to 'prove' that they are love's young dream (well, young in their own estimation) and financially milk it until they have pocketed the last cent available. Then there will be a story that is the equivalent of a sugar coma about how wonderful things are and then, dramatically and blindsiding their hated tabloids, we will find out that they have actually split up six months ago. That is the crazy town drill these days. Of course, they will both then compete against one another for the money to be made afterwards but it is clear that the winner will be the one who is more motivated by money out of the two of them. 😉

Croque · 05/11/2022 17:30

Everything will always and forever be the fault of the RF even after the main offenders on their list are long dead.

MidnightConstellation · 05/11/2022 17:42

Plenty of books to be written by MM about how hard she struggled to help her husband. How she bent over backwards to prise him away from his horrible family , but how in the end, Love Wasn’t Enough. How much she loves her beautiful children who are a Prince and Princess, don’t you know. How much she suffered being part of That Institution, but now she’s found her happiness ( probably with an even richer man).

I don’t quite know what he will do. Probably find a nice but dim aristocratic woman and settle down to breed horses in the country.

So the marriage is finished or finishing according to the last few posts on here?!

Wishing it so doesn't make it happen

Lockupyourbiscuits · 05/11/2022 18:15

I don’t think it is useful for anyone with mental health issues to bare their soul ( truth or lie)to the world
A Pandora’s box he can never take back

Its shame after Diana was manipulated into her interview nothing has been learned - the terrible impact on her children an example

I hope he doesn’t have any regrets in years to come and has thought very carefully whether he would be comfortable with his children reading every word in years to come - has he considered them at all in this endeavour?

Far better to move on and make a lovely life for your family

It makes me feel uneasy

Marulatree · 05/11/2022 19:13

A lot of speculation about the state of another couple’s marriage. It seems to me if a person were truly happy in their own relationship they wouldn’t be wishing the demise of another. H&M appear to be a happily married couple so I think you need to wish on another genie. Or better yet, take steps to acquire or improve your own relationships. The incessant speculation comes across as what it probably is – ENVY!

Ohnonevermind · 05/11/2022 19:19

I don’t think it’s nice to speculate on either H&M or W&K’s marriage

Don’t wish for it at all. I hope they are very happy. Unfortunately I really don’t think it will go the distance. Happy to be proved wrong.

Agree. Speculation with an undercurrent of glee is uncalled for.
You've even worked out he's going to end up with a 'nice but dim aristocrat' when Meghan's toast.
