Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

Calm before the storm as always - the crown, Netflix reality show and the book - all
in the next few weeks

milti · 03/11/2022 12:21

Not sure about when the reality show is out actually - but it must be soon - not that I will be watching 😂

They are living their authentic lives. You are the one branding it inauthentic by virtue of their titles and that's your business and problem, not theirs. Fergie was hawking weight watchers and is selling Mills and Boon novels using her titles. She went on Oprah to complain about the institution and gray men too, Is she being inauthentic?

Alleged rapist and child trafficker, Duke of York who retains his round the clock tax payer funded security wants a word too 😂

Harry and Meghan's titles are going NOWHERE.

Well said!

Let me blunt for a second. Bad press over their 'work' IDGAF about, publicity is publicity. Spotify seems pleased with Archetypes performance, the podcast oscillates between a position in the Top 5 and Top 10 in the US. Harry's book is on track to do well on just pre-orders (Top 10 bestsellers on Amazon and was #1 briefly). I'm sure the tabloids will bash their Netflix series enough for people to be curious and give it a watch.

It's the pointless nonsense from royal experts and palace sources that grates. They can talk about their work all day long, i'm looking forward to the upcoming weeks.

Don’t get me wrong - people will watch the reality show and read the book -
some people like the pod casts. I’ll show my arse on the town hall square if Netflix and Spotify renew their contracts though

hoooops · 03/11/2022 13:02

It must be quite uncomfortable for Harry, working for Netflix when they also make The Crown, especially if they schedule the new series close to his doc.

They can take themselves elsewhere if the contracts are not renewed. Spotify didn't renew their deal with the Obamas, so they went to Audible.

Again could be seen as hypocrisy as he is known to despise the press and blame them for what happened to Diana, yet is happy to accept money from Netflix which is currently making millions of dollars out of sensationalising her personal life.

Harry explained it pretty well on Corden. Netflix have made it clear they are dramatising occurrences not professing to tell the truth. The Royal Family LOVED the crown when the Queen was young and they looked cute.

Far less damaging than the tabloids the royal family are in cahoots with. Giving them interviews and first dibs at family photographs.

Charles is there hiring a former Daily Mail editor, the paper that writes disgusting articles about Meghan daily. Camilla's biographer (Angela Levin, who was given access to Clarence House and a royal tour) is constantly retweeting conspiracy theories about Meghan. I'd have no loyalty to them either.

Indeed - but the point I am making is that he is happy to accept money from a company currently making millions out of sensationalising his late mother's private life, which does seem at odds to his previous position on privacy and the media. Not sure how relevant it is that Camilla enjoyed early episodes.

Give me his exact quotes and the parts that seem at odds.

You aren’t seriously putting H and M in the same league as the Obamas are you ??

Where am I supposed to put them? is it not the same Spotify that declined to renew the contracts?

Correct me if I wrong but your post suggested to me that H and M could have the same clout as the Obamas and that left me incredulous . I would suggest that a moaning Prince and a former D list actress who spending a few months being a working Royal , will not have a long shelf life

Have you really never heard that he has a negative attitude towards the media? 😂

How about "I lost my mother to this self-manufactured rabidness"

Or "I've seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person."

Hmm.. someone I love... commoditised... hello Netflix, where do I sign?

H&M married in May 2018, stepped back in January 2020, I think that made them working royals for more than a few months. The Obama's clout wasn't enough for Spotify to renew their contracts so I'm not that fussed about it.

The Prince and former D list actress are doing quite well for themselves. I only see more and more success in their future.

milti · 03/11/2022 14:12

We’ll see - they took so long with the Spotify podcasts and still nothing from Netflix - I’m not sure others will want the hassle . Time will tell - may be QVC ?

This isn’t really worth arguing about but I need to point out that M had Maternity Leave ( fair enough ) and they left the U.K. in November 2019 so not a long time as a working royal by any stretch of the imagination.

Yes, time will tell 😄. Watching them continue to succeed will be amazing.

QVC is a living for some, after all, the Duchess of York promoted weight watchers and Peter Phillips hawked milk in China.

Everyone gets a chance at success.

I am actually a QVC fan - love Molton Brown and Elemis on there - some good deals especially TSV

You’ve got to laugh when some seem
to equate H&M achievements with the Obama’s.

When I look at the mockery and expectations the press set for the Sussexes, I am so proud of where they are now. Home owners and running their own business. Well pleased for them.

But is it really any worse than Meghan's own claim about the response to their wedding in South Africa being equated with Mandela?

I realise Mandela's a much more controversial figure, but at least that one came from the lady herself ...

Ah yes, the rejoicing in the streets, that was a corker.

Looks like Fergie wasn't the only one to try and make it in America. Edward tried his hand at speaking gigs too, along with his own production company. Fascinating.
