People losing their minds!!

I've put the news on today for the first time since Friday. Had constant twitter / news notifications so heard what's happening.

This morning I've heard people say they saw the queen as a second grandmother. They are as upset as they would be if they lost their mum.

People queuing during their night with their primary age kids.

Just seems a bit mad no?

It's the amount of people who seem happy to be consider inferior to this woman and her family that is shocking me the most. Just happy to let someone live like that and not question it just because they were born. Crazy.

This is what struck me too when I was watching the lying in state.

I think the majority of us can agree that we don't believe the monarch is actually appointed by god (or perhaps this is where I am going wrong?). But assuming this is the case, if we all KNOW that it's a bogus institution, and the royal family is nothing but an artificial construct, whose members are only afforded the privileges and positions they have through chance and circumstance - then why do people still slavishly make a spectacle of their inferiority bowing and scraping in front of them?

The idea of a human being being required to curtsy and bow to another human being boggles my mind.

Fwiw I'm not necessarily against having a monarchy (bogus as it is). It's just the fawning and the demeaning show of subservience I don't get.

Honestly it’s ridiculous now!
google has still greyed out their log and is reflecting on the queens life 😳

it’s sad she’s died but she’s had an amazing life. No need for a mourning period this long that impacts ordinary people and causing hassle and financial hardship for so many who are being forced to take time off work

Nah it's honouring and showing respect in death.

We stood and bowed are heads for funeral cortèges during Covid when we couldn't attend. It's not fawning at all.

Thanks for you’re input, their would of been people scared forever otherwise

MsFizz · 15/09/2022 19:26

@sunglassesonthetable yes I get that there's a time and a place to show respect upon a death. That wasn't really what I meant. I was talking more generally... us commoners are supposed to bow and scrape in life as well. It was just the whole spectacle of the thing and overt shows of adulation that made me realise how many people actually seem to consider themselves as loyal subjects. Just made me ruminate a bit

Novella4 · 15/09/2022 19:49

@MsFizz

I put a link to an article by a psychology professor below . He is discussing the various reasons why people are queuing .

Yes to everything you said re why do people worship them or even tacitly support them when we know it's all made nonsense .

I find it disturbing now after days and days of this . And the queen planned for these 10 days . How modest . Maybe she's trying to increase support for Charles .
But you can't force people to mourn.
And let's say ' independent thinkers' will be even more alienated by the charade . But then we aren't the intended audience are we?
Someone said on another thread that they could easily book slots online like we do for everything else . But the Windsors don't want that . They want a display of long long queues so they look loved

It's the cost that angers me
Windsors are worth billions ( not the millions that they quote ) . They should be paying for this funeral and building hospitals or homes in every city in their mothers memory .
Not this PR exercise

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 19:52

It’s not a given people see themselves as loyal subjects as opposed to identifying with a culturally unifying icon of their country. Our monarchy is one of the most identifying parts of our culture abroad and it’s history is ingrained in our surroundings and education.

It’s not a history without issues but it is ours. The Queen did oversee a reign that oversaw huge cultural shifts.

Couldn't agree less about the queue.

I think it's a brilliant, simple way of sorting those who really want to do it from the naysayers, chancers and performative. If you do the queue you really want to do it.

Plus not the hell of on line queuing , on your own watching the circle spinning and ID issues. And mostly people grabbing loads and also reselling.

I think the queue works really well.

Tillsforthrills · 15/09/2022 19:58

The news of Diana affected me far more than the news of the Queen. Like pp has said, a very long and very privileged life, I admire her but didn’t find her very endearing.

Well maybe her last photo with the new PM did make me a bit feel sorry for her.

Andromachehadabadday · 15/09/2022 19:59

Why are people so worked up about the queue, when they have no interest in joining it?

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 20:19

That wasn't really what I meant. I was talking more generally... us commoners are supposed to bow and scrape in life as well.

I'm not a Royalist but I do get honouring someone in death. 70 years seems appropriate as marker. For me the Queen represents the values of my parents and I admire that stoicism.

There's a lot that I think is wrong with the monarchy but I have to admit I am enjoying the roll out of tradition that is happening right now. I think it's possible to have both those thoughts at the same time.

I won't be queuing for the lying in state but part of me is mesmerised by it. I would like to experience what it feels like. That's where the queue works really well, as It puts off a chancer like me.

I won't ever be 'bowing or scraping' though.

CathyorClaire · 15/09/2022 20:37

With you, OP.

I always thought the endlessly looping Philip stuff was a dry run for his missus but I really never expected it to be as unremitting as it's been.

I never thought we'd see a repeat of the collective madness that surrounded Diana's death but now I'm really wondering if we're going to see all that dramatic wailing encored on Monday.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 20:51

Who are these people? Do they have jobs?

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 20:56

Who are these people? Do they have jobs?

All sorts. Such a wide variety of people.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 21:00

How do you know?

BorgQueen · 15/09/2022 21:00

Well, I’ve just dropped DH at the station, he’ll be in London by 10. I think he’s bonkers but he wanted to go, he’s just messaged me to say a couple of old RAF colleagues are also on trains so they will meet up in Southwark park, where the queue now starts. He will probably just be getting to Westminster when I’m getting up at 06.30. Mad.

User2145738790 · 15/09/2022 21:04

you could just maintain a dignified silence, in the aftermath of OUR QUEEN , a well respected world leader, dying

Shan't.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 21:12

Not my queen.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 21:13

I’d be more upset at Mary Berry leaving this mortal coil.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 21:13

Not my queen.

crack on 👍🏻

DouglasTea · 15/09/2022 09:39

Completely!

I keep thinking "stockholm syndrome"! People (on here especially) attacking anyone who dares dissent from blind adoration of this completely innocent and altruistic institution.

My mind is boggled.

There's a very inherent weirdness with a lot of English people (i'm English too btw).

The caff doffing is second nature. You can see why the Tories rule so easily despite fucking us all hard.

User135644 · 15/09/2022 21:17

*cap doffing

Forelock tuggers.
