I've put the news on today for the first time since Friday. Had constant twitter / news notifications so heard what's happening.

This morning I've heard people say they saw the queen as a second grandmother. They are as upset as they would be if they lost their mum.

People queuing during their night with their primary age kids.

Just seems a bit mad no?

Meh, I mean, the most hyperbolic statements make good telly. Presumably the more reasonable and forgettable responses are ignored by the TV crews.

The spectacle of grieving is being intentionally managed. They could as easily, in this day and age, allow people to queue digitally but then we wouldn't have the visual performance of grieving to beam across the world. The carefully selected outpourings of dramatic sadness may as well be lines on a script.

The entire thing is a performance - some mourners are playing their parts better than others.

We've turned into North Korea.

We've turned into North Korea.

Apologies to any North Koreans reading this for the comedy comparison. Oh hang on....

It does show how powerful the media is and how easily people are influenced on a mass level.
I'm sure this is driven by social media as well as mainstream media.

Echoes of how quickly and easily Covid hysteria was whipped up.

We can write words on the internet, we're so free.

Try actually being anyone with a profile (or a placard on the street) not toeing the line.

We can access the internet , yep we've got incomparable freedoms

They're a part of history just by being alive at the time when the Queen died. There's nothing to be gained from going and gawping at her coffin.

I wonder how many of these people spent their days thinking about the wonders of the Queen when she was alive? I'm guessing none at all, as she's not related to them. Which is another reason why the whole competitive mourning thing is insane.

The 2020 lockdowns will be what is more remembered in the future from this brief time period.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 21:49

You might hate the monarchy, the establishment whatever. You do you.

But Keep going @User135644 on how you have as little freedom as North Korea. Cos you sound ridiculous.

Tbh you don't sound like you're a very reliable source for anything.

True. The stupid, sodding lockdown will always be remembered with loathing.

A completely freak event where we're pretty much shut in our homes for months on end with completely deserted streets and everything shut, or the natural death of an old woman? Which event will be more remembered in the future?

It's not mutually exclusive.

It's not but the idea of "wanting to see history being made". Fair enough if that's what they wanted to do. Just making the point that it's not even close to being the biggest thing to happen in the country over the last couple of years.

And?

People were part of that too.

The live feed from Westminster Hall is interesting. The people queueing for hours are very diverse, many are not middle aged or old, many are not white. It is probably a more reflective cross section of society than some people on here hurling insults to demonstrate the depth of their republicanism really want to see.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 22:23

Live feed from Westminster??? Good grief! 😂

Yes, the live feed. You should watch, so you can enjoy laughing at the young black men in sports gear and the ladies in hijabs ( to give 2 examples, there are many more) who have queued for hours to be there.

I didn't loathe lockdown. I could drive to the supermarket without umpteen cars flying around. I stopped gadding about and actually got some useful things done at home. I could do with a government which declares a 6-week lockdown every year from now on.

I agree with you, @CPL593H , that the live feed is interesting -- the great cross-section of folk. I don't watch it all day long but I watched a few minutes this morning and saw Teresa May and her husband filing past.
I do have a choice whether to have the TV and radio on or off. I could have avoided the royal coverage if I'd wanted to.
I feel that there has been a calm air about this mourning. I don't feel that there's hysteria.

Try it. It's bit of a history lesson. 😉

What I find really bonkers (and actually a little worrying) are the vitriolic comments towards or about Meghan

  • how she’s smirking
  • how she’s totally making it about herself
  • how dare she hold his hand
  • she hounded the queen to her death

i reckon these same people probably did a #bekind when Caroline Flack died;
what possesses someone to instigate or join such a hate-filled pile-on?

Well nothing new there.

If you're in that queue for hours and you need to go to the loo what do people do ?
Does anyone know ?
