I've put the news on today for the first time since Friday. Had constant twitter / news notifications so heard what's happening.

This morning I've heard people say they saw the queen as a second grandmother. They are as upset as they would be if they lost their mum.

People queuing during their night with their primary age kids.

Just seems a bit mad no?

@Benjispruce4 and what’s that got to do with the colour of the boarders on a website? That’s just getting yourself wound up over a complete non-event.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 18:00

@cotton it’s pathetic and unnecessary. Gloomy colours, gloomy music on the radio, gloomy tv presenters talking in hushed voices. Totally OTT.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 18:01

My opinion. That’s what this thread is about. If you want to cry over a very old , rich lady dying there are countless threads to do so.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 18:04

MN is the same old colour on your phone! 👍🏻

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 18:04

Not mine!

Most people I've seen interviewed have said they wanted to be part of history.

They're a part of history just by being alive at the time when the Queen died. There's nothing to be gained from going and gawping at her coffin.

I wonder how many of these people spent their days thinking about the wonders of the Queen when she was alive? I'm guessing none at all, as she's not related to them. Which is another reason why the whole competitive mourning thing is insane.

Andromachehadabadday · 15/09/2022 18:06

The boarder on a website is gloomy?
The radio I listen to is not gloomy it’s like it was 2 weeks ago
no presenters are talking in hushed tones, unless it’s during an actual event.

The people who are annoyed by this are really going out of their way to actually watch it, because it’s been really easy for me to not watch most of it.

But then moaning about what they are choosing to do.

If the MN banner really impacts your mood so much, you clearly have a lot going on.

But I really find people on the extremes of these topics interesting. Those who think we should dress on black and eat porridge until the coronation and then (on the other side) that would have only been happy if she had been thrown straight on the fire at balmoral to keep costs down with one small mention on the news.

Thanks but I’m far more interested in what’s driving those who feel they have to direct vitriol and claim distress from innocuous actions that don’t affect them in the slightest.

The colour of a website banner is a poor reason to raise your blood pressure.

ThelmaDinkley · 15/09/2022 18:09

I think we should all be content with tugging our forelocks.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 18:10

My blood pressure is fine and I’ve been at work all day and not given the queen a thought. When she died, I had a moment of “oh that’s sad, the end of an Era” I expected a news special that evening. What we’ve actually got is enforced moaning and not everyone cares. That’s my peeve. This is one of the only spaces to vent so you I’ve vented here. Anyway back to my normal life. Enjoy bowing and scraping at your leisure.

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 18:11

There's nothing to be gained from going and gawping at her coffin

you could say the same of any pilgrimage or personal quest. A family member walked with a group a section of coast in memory of his friend . Utterly pointless in that it achieved precisely f all tangible but was a precious memory for the group and a chance for them to feel they had ‘given’ something to his memory.

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 18:12

will do. You enjoy those lemons.

maranella · 15/09/2022 18:17

I agree with you OP - it's nuts! I wouldn't queue up for hours to walk past the coffin of anyone, even if they were the Queen. I didn't know her, never met her, yes she was a good Queen, but so what? I find all the weeping and emoting and 'I just felt the need to come and pay my respects' completely baffling. She's dead! She doesn't know you're here weeping by her coffin and if she did I imagine she'd be a bit baffled too.

Antarcticant · 15/09/2022 18:20

Queen Eleanor was brought back from Sheffield (where she died) to London (where she was buried) in a procession that lasted 13 days

I can believe it, the roadworks on the M1 are a nightmare 😂

Novella4 · 15/09/2022 18:24

Pilgrimage ?
Reminds me of course . Charles will be the spiritual leader of the Church of England . THAT will be interesting .

And article on the various reasons people are joining the queue

I don't think she'd be baffled at all. Since it's totally traditional at State Funerals all over the world. And has been done for literally centuries. People queued for Father and Granfather. She'd be totally across it. 😀

Paying your respects is a special thing. I understand you either get it or you don't. Never mind.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 18:28

There's nothing to be gained from going and gawping at her coffin

Clearly a huge matter of opinion.

Not mine!

Your settings? My phone is not in mourning at all!

Andromachehadabadday · 15/09/2022 18:29

I only watched a minute or so of it, earlier today so may have got the wrong end of the stick. But didn’t, even, Edward VIII also lie in state with a lot of people coming to see him?

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 18:29

That was my first thought @sunglassesonthetable - the Queen basically planned everything we’re seeing now. The idea she’d be ‘baffled’ 😂

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 18:33

But didn’t, even, Edward VIII also lie in state with a lot of people coming to see him?

yup, and Winston Churchill in the sixties. It’s really not a new concept. Many people still do it privately for families although it seems a lot more popular in America.

ChaToilLeam · 15/09/2022 18:34

It is nuts. All the ridiculous things that are being done “out of respect“ for our dear departed monarch. Can the decibel level of a scanner beep really indicate the level of regard held for the Queen? Or whether Guinea Pig Awareness Week takes place? And I definitely don’t think cancelling funerals and important medical appointments do her honour either.

Will be glad when this whole silly circus comes to a halt after the funeral. Which we won’t be watching, although I understand others very much wish to.

Why will it be interesting? Charles is a Christian and frankly I think a Church whose founding Supreme Head was Henry VIII (Act of Supremacy 1534) has seen worse.

Unless you think the fact he may be more inclusive of other faiths in national life as being a bad thing?

1994girl · 15/09/2022 18:37

They need to get a fucking grip.

ByeByeMr · 15/09/2022 09:54

It's ridiculous. As someone who has lost both my parents I find comments like that quite insulting.

Couldn’t agree more.

Novella4 · 15/09/2022 18:47

@CPL593H
Oh I don't doubt the Church of England has seen worse monarchs .
That's the trouble with monarchs , you have to take what you are given .

It's just another thing to think about . The queen didn't attend his wedding to Camilla as she was head of the church and now he is head himself .
