I hope Camilla has changed into some flats!

I’m finding all the Scottish aspects (which wouldn’t have happened had HMTQ died in England) fascinating. I agree hugely intrusive, and so odd members of the public filing past as the 4 children were stood in vigil. The King looked so relieved when it was over.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 12/09/2022 20:05

Does anyone know why the king changed his dress?

They tend to wear the kilt when in Scotland so it was for being at the Parliament.

I think as well there may have been an element of differentiating between a short vigil while she’s lying at risk and the full military wear for a Prince’s Vigil when lying in state.

@JustLyra thank you! Have enjoyed this thread and posters knowledge. The vigil just a wee bit much for me

I thought so too

I found the vigil excruciating. I felt very sorry for them. I vaguely had assumed they would stop the public filing past while they were there. In the end, the weren’t there for that long -15 mins? - but it must have been awful for them.

SuperCamp · 12/09/2022 20:20

These archers (I love them!), are they actually trained as guards? Or military? Could they fend off any sort I attack or assault?

She isnt recognised enough

My Dh met her several times in a work context and said he was enormously impressed by how well prepared, engaged and warm she was.

Good to see her as part of the Vigil of the Princes too, although I can only imagine how worn out they must be, Charles especially as he's been here there and everywhere for 5 days now.

Pallisers · 12/09/2022 20:25

sorry for the very trivial question here but was Charles wearing a brooch during the vigil? I loved what he wore and really hope it was a brooch.

The vigil is a very moving and wonderful tribute. When a very young friend of mine died, he was waked at home and his cousins set up a rota for a vigil by his coffin right through the night.

Andante57 · 12/09/2022 20:27

but there's also something so beautiful about it, king and royals sharing the space with the quiet reflection of the public filing past. What an occasion and how moving

I agree. I’ve been watching it and it’s very moving.

Ryder68 · 12/09/2022 20:28

Charles, Anne and Camilla all in their seventies! astonishing stamina.

Jellykat · 12/09/2022 20:32

I couldnt have stood like that for long, and i'm in my 50s! how did they do that ??

They were only there for about 15 mins, weren’t they?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/09/2022 20:34

Was it a clan pin, something to reflect that he's now Chief of the Chiefs? (Disclaimer: not sure if this is a thing, just remember it was the title of Julian Calder's portrait!)

I think Camilla was chauffered mostly, well I don't recall seeing her walking in the cortege. She has bunions. Anne is an experienced horse rider which has stood her well. Charles has good military bearing, and he has a valet to dress him, well probably two or three not including the master of the toothbrush and the toilet roll.

I'm approaching their age and the only difference between their funeral and those I have experienced myself is the goldfish bowl situation. Death and funerals are mentally and physically exhausting no matter who you are.

Princess Anne is wonderful. She’s a true Princess and I have so so much respect for her, and her strength and courage.

I didn't know The Bleacher Lassie o' Kelvinhaugh, thank you for sharing that. Karen Matheson and the clarsach were so moving as well. It all seemed so personal and so right.

Karen Mathewson from the Capercaillies?

Notplayingball · 12/09/2022 20:58

*Matheson

travellingfamily · 12/09/2022 21:02

I presume HMQ will have planned it all herself. The DofE had been very involved in the planning for his own funeral so I presume she was the same.

Jellykat · 12/09/2022 21:10

Oh, 15 minutes was that all? it felt like a helluva lot more watching it...

It was white heather from Balmoral.

Apparently, it was only 10 minutes, in fact.

I think the Scots pretend they have awful weather to keep everyone away Wink

I work with colleagues in London daily over VC and if its a sunny day up here in Scotland they always make a joke/comment which I find funny as Scotland isn't so dreich all of the time.....but I have to admit the footage over the last few days must have done wonders for The Scottish Tourist Board. I think many people will have thought we must visit Scotland!
