I hope Camilla has changed into some flats!

Scotland has been looking glorious and I too am glad we've seen what we have.

They did. Very specific walk to the church, half stutter walk?
Half march?

Charles is on quite the scheduled I thought it was all remarkable.
I wonder how long the poor soldiers stand their for??

The Scottish aspect has been absolutely fantastic! So moving and homely and cosy.

elizaregina · 12/09/2022 22:47

I think Scotland will get a huge tourism boost after this?

BornBlonde · 12/09/2022 22:55

Strange question but you are all a knowledgeable bunch! Why did William & Harry wear blue suits at the weekend when I keep reading only black is appropriate for mourning?

Does anyone know why the king changed his dress?

He has changed clothes so many times today, I bet he can’t wait to get home and get into his jammies.

20 minutes per shift, I read.

(And they also have their bows to lean on. I mean I'm sure they don't really, but perhaps just a teeny bit!)

I wondered that.

I think I also saw that Cameron was in blue for the Accession council meeting which seemed really poor form.

They were only there for about 15 mins, weren’t they?

But it was at the end of what must have been an extremely tiring day, especially for King Charles.

travellingfamily · 13/09/2022 08:33

I see they have been rehearsing in the early hours. www.itv.com/news/london/2022-09-13/troops-stage-early-morning-rehearsal-for-queens-coffin-procession-in-london

Anyone know when other rehearsals will be? And also what is the route from Northolt to BP for this evening?

LIZS · 13/09/2022 08:44

Route later today from Northolt is A40, Eastbourne Terrace, Lancaster Gate, Bayswater Road, Marble Arch, Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner, Constitution Hill, Buckingham Palace. Due to land about 6:55pm.

Pugdogmom · 13/09/2022 08:58

Late to the thread, but those drivers were amazing driving that slowly up the RM at that slow speed. One of the horses looked a bit spooked at the guns going off.
And I felt for those young soldiers carrying that coffin. Their faces were a picture, and tried not to show how heavy it was.
How many changes of clothes did Charles have yesterday, he must have spent his entire day changing outfits...🤣
I thought the service at St Giles was perfect, very simple and personal.
Think the " actual " funeral might be a lot less personal.

NiqueNique · 13/09/2022 09:35

I hope it’s okay to post this here, I thought it’s fitting to the thread.

The Poet Laureate has written a poem in tribute to the Queen. It references the Lily of the Valley, one of HM’s favourite flowers.

Floral Tribute by Simon Armitage:

"Evening will come, however determined the late afternoon,

Limes and oaks in their last green flush, pearled in September mist.

I have conjured a lily to light these hours, a token of thanks,

Zones and auras of soft glare framing the brilliant globes.

A promise made and kept for life - that was your gift -

Because of which, here is a gift in return, glovewort to some,

Each shining bonnet guarded by stern lance-like leaves.

The country loaded its whole self into your slender hands,

Hands that can rest, now, relieved of a century's weight.

Evening has come. Rain on the black lochs and dark Munros.

Lily of the Valley, a namesake almost, a favourite flower

Interlaced with your famous bouquets, the restrained

Zeal and forceful grace of its lanterns, each inflorescence

A silent bell disguising a singular voice. A blurred new day

Breaks uncrowned on remote peaks and public parks, and

Everything turns on these luminous petals and deep roots,

This lily that thrives between spire and tree, whose brightness

Holds and glows beyond the life and border of its bloom."

heldinadream · 13/09/2022 09:43

@NiqueNique thank you for posting the poem, you reminded me that I intended to catch up with it somewhere. It's extremely beautiful, and - if this isn't too poor a note for this thread - a very welcome antidote to all the facebook poems of a mawkish nature.

CPL593H · 13/09/2022 09:47

@NiqueNique Thank you, I've been waiting to see that. I managed to get a signed copy of his Jubilee poem, good but much longer. Love this one and his Laureate tribute for Philip.

This has been such a nice, calm thread among the plentiful bunfights and I hope it can continue up to the funeral.

smilesy · 13/09/2022 09:50

Harry and William were wearing black suits I think. There is a photo that makes them
appear blue, but if you watch the video they appear to be black. But a dark colour is suitable for mourning anyway. I think Lady Louise was wearing navy blue. Her shoes definitely looked blue.

smilesy · 13/09/2022 09:51

@NiqueNique thank you for posting the poem

CPL593H · 13/09/2022 10:09

Oh, I've just seen the acrostic! Elizabeth (x 2)

NiqueNique · 13/09/2022 10:12

Yes. He said he did it that way because HM didn’t often get to hear her name on its own (at least not in public). I’d never thought of that but of course she didn’t.

MaggieFS · 13/09/2022 10:26

Thanks @NiqueNique that's beautiful.

I'd be delighted for this thread to continue. I didn't expect anyone to return so I started a new thread for today. I'll go with the flow as to which is used, but I'd love this gentle chat and witty observations to continue.

In regards to mourning, I believe that as long as it is a dark colour it is deemed appropriate. I think government and senior royals keep to black but for private individuals it is enough to ensure ones’s attire is suitably sombre.

NiqueNique · 13/09/2022 10:42

And as pp said, the Princes were in black for the walkabout at Windsor - it’s just that sometimes lighting can make it look blue/navy.

I may be wrong (nowhere near as knowledgeable as many on this thread!) but if any individuals were not in black I assumed it was because Saturday and Sunday were in some ways a 'break' from the mourning in that it was about the Accession meeting and Proclamations. The flags were also moved to full mast:

Flags will return to full mast when the Proclamation of the new King takes place at St James Palace (Saturday 10 September 2022).

Flags will remain at full mast until 1pm on the day when Proclamations take place in the Nations (Sunday 11 September 2022).

From Sunday evening we are back to mourning.

TrashyPanda · 13/09/2022 11:46

Flag Days (which is what the list of days flags are flown on Government Buildings is known as) are different from the period of mourning.

the official guidance is Following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, it is His Majesty The King's wish that a period of Royal Mourning be observed from now until seven days after The Queen’s Funeral

this is from the royal website

I went to see her this morning. Beautiful and calm inside. Glad I went. St Giles lovely inside.
