How do you feel about the RF and monarchy?

MarshaBradyo · 10/09/2022 16:05

Has it changed, do you support more or less

I had a thought that the Queen’s passing might lessen it for me but opposite has happened. I appreciate the historical significance and process

Also if you’re part of Commonwealth (I’m Aus too so am interested) what’s the general vibe about monarchy v republic

I’m blah about them. I think they’re unnecessary. They’re really just posh celebrities now, but the peasants enjoy a bit of pageantry and forelock tugging now and again and they give us something to talk about when we’re bored talking of talking about the weather. Benign and expensive.

There's nothing benign about them, they systematically intervene in govt legislation whenever it might expose them or threaten their immense wealth. They put a huge amount of effort into appearing benign. It's a con trick. They are scroungers, who don't pay their taxes.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 24/01/2023 10:49

I used to feel pretty neutral, now I feel quite strongly that we need to start phasing them out and moving towards becoming a republic. They’re interesting from a historical perspective but, as the daily revelations in the tabloids show, they’re just people with the same (or worse!) foibles as the rest of us, and the idea that they should be held up as some sort of standard is laughable.

Mostly I find them embarrassing, and the concept of a royal family incredibly outdated.

Comedycook · 24/01/2023 10:53

I tell you what I find truly pathetic...the plebs who shout "god save the king" in the crowds! Remember when the guy in the crowd shouted something at Andrew then all the commoners started shouting god save the king. Or if someone throws an egg or something....god save the king. What absolute losers.

I've always said it ..it's marketing genius. Not only do the British public tolerate these people living in luxury and opulence at our expense, we've actually been conditioned to feel grateful to them. Some people even feel sorry for them. It's incredible really.

crumpet · 24/01/2023 10:53

I support the institution and wouldn’t feel that becoming a republic is a positive step.

Brefugee · 24/01/2023 10:53

There's nothing benign about them, they systematically intervene in govt legislation whenever it might expose them or threaten their immense wealth.

This is my biggest driver away from any vestiges of accepting a monarchy i still had (while the Queen was alive). The Black Spider Letters, and other antics (applying for a fuel grant for pensioners etc) which may or may not have been carried out with the full knowledge of "The Firm" are massive red flags.

As an institution it is only there to protect itself. Nothing more. I am very interested to see how "slimmed down" Charles makes it. But i would prefer him not to be crowned, and if he is, for him to be the absolute last of them.

As for buildings etc, i would expect them to be taken into public ownership (maybe under a trust?) and put to use as museums, conference centres, hotels, places where events could be held etc etc.

I would expect one small palace (or maybe Windsor castle) to be retained for use by the head of state for entertaining. Or parts of Buckingham Palace. Gardens? i expect them to be opened as parks for the public. Paid entrance if necessary (not much though). To be used to train people in gardening and sustainable farming etc.

You do know you can hide a topic don’t you?

Or not click on the thread - what made you it sounds madness to get so irate about something that you don’t have to do

plus it’s pretty old as threads go not a new one

RudsyFarmer · 24/01/2023 10:59

I still want a monarchy so for me my feelings haven’t changed. I’m generally ambivalent but would rather have than not have.

SpanishOnion · 24/01/2023 13:22

Beercrispsandnuts · 24/01/2023 10:27

If you take a moment out from abusing people. you will see the subject of the thread is has your views changed. So if you’re waiting for an argument on retention you will wait a long time, as it is simply not what the op asked.

you can however start your own thread instead of abusively loitering on someone else’s hoping it morphs into a different topic.

Off you pop.

And all threads on Mn must stick without deviation to the precise question posed by the OP, must they, while being policed by some bustling online busybody in hi-vis and a whistle?

Why I am glad you asked the members for guidance since you’re so confused, the answer is of course not, if rhe conversation deviates that’s fine.

but we all must admit it’s fairly ridiculous to be sitting waiting for the answer to a question that was never asked, nor is the actual subject of the discussion,

I mean if you and the other poster want to hang around waiting for folks to answer an unasked question like we can all read your minds, then crack on. Just don’t complain like the other poster when no one does.

SaltyCrisp · 13/09/2022 09:14

I'm ambivalent.
I love the pomp and pageantry.
But ....How can the Queen/King sit comfortably in their castles and palaces when so many of their subjects struggle.

I adore Kate.
But ... the sight of W&K taking their beautiful children to their £50k a year school (surely not each?!) turned my stomach.

I think Charles is going to have to be careful or he'll piss people off.

Kind of sums up how I feel, it feels wrong that they are so unbelievably privileged and rich when the a large number of their subjects are poor.

Lovemelovemydoggie · 24/01/2023 13:40

I love having a royal family: the sense of history, the political stability and the fact that it raises the UK’s profile around the World.

Also, if we switched to an elected Head of State, it would be one single person.

At the moment, the royal family has 10+ people working together to entertain foreign Heads of State, acting as patrons of charities and the armed forces, undertaking official visits, carrying out community visits, highlighting good causes, giving out honours and hosting garden parties etc etc. No one person could carry out all this work. Who would take on these roles if we did not have the royal family?

Utterly tiresome are those that come on a thread and make this kind of comment

defi · 24/01/2023 13:42

I think we should do like the French

You suggest a revolution and chopping off the heads of the royal family then?
How nice!

NowDoYouBelieveMe · 24/01/2023 13:46

On principle, dead against it. Abolish the whole lot asap.

Re: the family in particular, a bunch of weirdos harbouring a sex offender and I'm embarrassed to be in any way associated with them

Onnabugeisha · 24/01/2023 13:56

I’m all for the RF and our monarchy 🤙
Funny how most of the Republican ‘arguments’ against them are based on misinformation and slander.

Shows how we can modernise without sacrificing tradition.

The RF is the only part of the country actually functioning- investing in wind farms, propping up charities for the poor and disadvantaged, keeping international relations friendly, advocating for environmental protections and investing in green technology.

The PM, Parliament, and the Government are on their twelfth year of profiteering fuckery and chaos.

Your 'argument' in favour of the monarchy consists entirely of 'at least they're not as bad as the government'. Well, lobby your MPs for change, and vote for a better government next time. Because there, you do actually have a choice.

MarshaBradyo · 24/01/2023 14:05

My feelings don’t re the RF change depending on who is in power

Does anyone think they’d feel differently if Labour are in?

Labour are quite pro monarchy these days anyway, with Starmer who has done some articles on duty and Queen tribute / God Save the King at the conference

I have a long list of arguments, that’s just one of them.

As for “choice” in MPs we don’t really have choice, but the illusion of choice.
I have voted all my life for a better Government, but surprise! Never got it.
It sort of proves the maxim that while individuals are smart, people are stupid.
Every vote/referendum for something goes the way of stupid.

At least the RF is educated from birth for their roles, unlike numpties that find themselves to be in positions like Secretary for Home Office, Health, DWP, Foreign Office, Business and so on and then muck about like mad goats leaving things worse than before. And we don’t vote or choose who gets these jobs, no the unelected PM appoints his/her bffs to these jobs.

And what’s sad is the sovereign of the U.K. is Parliament (has been for centuries), and all this discussion about the RF is regarding symbolic representatives, not the loons with actual power over us.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 17/11/2022 09:55

I think the whole royal family needs to sit and watch Game Of Thrones and take detailed notes.

If we’re going to have a squabbling royal family they need to handle things in a more interesting way.

Don’t write a book with a shit title. Ride in on a dragon and burn Buckingham Palace to the ground.

Honestly, they need to make themselves more watchable.

😀😀

yes, part of the identify of great britain, all over the world

The Roman empire was a part of Rome but that fell and so will the monarchy. Useless over privileged scroungers with the useless queen consort and a n unlikable King. Time has come to Abolish it.

Don't like them. Starting to think they are horrible, horrible people behind palace doors, who don't deserve any of the adulation they get.

I'm a republican and none of my information is based on slander or misinformation. However I think you are sadly misguided. Do you have any idea how the royal families across the globe actually got into their esteemed positions? They nicked the lot, and carried on thieving and murdering until they became so powerful no one could question them. If you think that's OK then continue saying how wonderful they are.

I man you can't defend the idea of a hereditary monarch... however I think we should keep them for the entertainment value. It's like a soap opera!

I agree, it's certainly better than Corrie at the moment.
