The royal family

How do you feel about the RF and monarchy?

Has it changed, do you support more or less

I had a thought that the Queen’s passing might lessen it for me but opposite has happened. I appreciate the historical significance and process

Also if you’re part of Commonwealth (I’m Aus too so am interested) what’s the general vibe about monarchy v republic

My feelings are getting stronger for the Royal Family as the years roll on. I love all the pomp and pageantry and the Queen’s funeral made me feel proud to be British.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2023 17:18

luckily Charles was born first, before Andrew

Seems a bit of a low bar Confused

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2023 17:19

Luckily Charles was born first, before Andrew

Sorry, only part of that posted; the rest said:

Admittedly the loathsome Andrew offers a useful distraction technique, but since the issue for many is the paedophile enabling, his elder brother has been amply shown to be no better

I've never quite understood why many are apparently quite relaxed to have such an individual in his position, but perhaps it's all part and parcel of what monarchists are happy to tolerate

Lampzade · 24/01/2023 17:21

I think since the death of the Queen they have become irrelevant and pointless tbh.
The Queen is a hard act to follow and I don’t think that Charles is up to the job

bobbytorq · 24/01/2023 17:25

Get rid of the lot of them . Up the Republic!

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 18:06

@Puzzledandpissedoff If you support a hereditary monarchy, you have to accept what you get. That means making excuses and minimising if who you get is not someone who in ordinary circumstances most people would support,

True enough, AttentionAll, though it still sometimes amazes me to see just what monarchists will minimise

I think we need a non-party political president instead. Someone like David Attenborough would be good! I can't stand him

Fair enough. It's never going to be possible to find someone universally liked, I guess. May I ask what's wrong with Attenborough?Grin

This response made me laugh as he’s always the suggestion

Not many people are unbiased politically

Of course, they will have their own political views, as the Royal family will also have. However, we could pick someone who doesn't really express their views openly.

I just think it's a weird thing in this day and age to have a role as important as head of state to be based on a hereditary system instead of merit and/or the people's democratic choice. It feels contrary to everything else that we are trying to do to make society fairer.

Brefugee · 24/01/2023 18:52

Tanni Grey Thompson is a crossbencher in the Lords. I think she'd be a great president

Coxspurplepippin · 24/01/2023 19:05

'based on a hereditary system instead of merit and/or the people's democratic choice.'

If you look around the world there's many H'soS whose position has little to do with merit and/or little to do with democratic choice.

He's a pomous old goat

LlynTegid · 24/01/2023 19:12

I'm of the school of thought that the alternatives are likely to be worse, and appreciate some part of public life not having the political process. Tradition as well and heritage, and I believe there is some extra tourism from overseas as a result.

Understand why the other 14 countries would want a local person not someone from overseas as head of state though.

That is exactly how I feel about Charles.

Of course, so let's not follow their example!

As for Attenborough being a pompous old git...well, maybe, but certainly no more so than our current head of state!

Coxspurplepippin · 24/01/2023 19:31

'Of course, so let's not follow their example!'

We ended up with Boris Johnson via a democratic election so I wouldn't hold out much hope, sadly.

Have you met him?

I worked with him when I worked at the BBC, admittedly a long time ago, but he is charming and I found him to be very kind and patient.

Roussette · 24/01/2023 19:57

I have always had this idea of... instead of an unelected Monarch... we have a Presidential role that are Nobel Laureates on a short fixed term with the option to be voted in again if they do well ! Science, Literature, Economics, Medicine. Each one could bring something to the role

Anything would be better than this system I feel. Unless Charles needs a massive overhaul of how the Monarchy works now. Because it leaks to the media, it has no input from anyone who he is supposed to 'rule', the excess of wealth is grotesque, the number of Royal residences (palaces, estates, etc) totalling 27 all over GB is just beyond ridiculous.

We all love the pomp and ceremony, we can still have that! Look at the processions and parades in Paris for Bastille Day... as good as anything we do. Why anyone thinks we would lose all that is ill informed.

Just my thoughts.

Roussette · 24/01/2023 19:58

That should read... Unless Charles does a massive overhaul...

I'm glad you found him to be lovely but I'm a bit sick of his preaching. How would he actually function as HOS? He's just as establishment as King Charles and I suspect a royalist.

I don't want to be ageist but he is obviously too far in years to be in that role.

MarshaBradyo · 24/01/2023 20:26

It’s interesting to have options (even if I have a preference for constitutional monarchy)

I’m not sure about Nobel prize idea although granted they are very clever yet it’s not something they are signing up for just by virtue of winning. And their skills / personality might not match

If it’s not automatic through winning a major prize but nominated instead who gets to nominate the runners?

I don't know, I hadn't thought as far as that, but I get what you're saying. Smile

It's all a bit hypothetical isn't it... nothing is changing in my lifetime, nor my DC's lifetimes either most likely....
