The royal family

How do you feel about the RF and monarchy?

Has it changed, do you support more or less

I had a thought that the Queen’s passing might lessen it for me but opposite has happened. I appreciate the historical significance and process

Also if you’re part of Commonwealth (I’m Aus too so am interested) what’s the general vibe about monarchy v republic

@MarshaBradyo Why does it matter? We are not selecting the system.
Why do you think simply being the first born to a random person is the best selection method? Lets not pretend any process that selected based on personal character or skills would have selected Charles.

MarshaBradyo · 25/01/2023 11:56

If we’re going to replace the system we have with a different one republicans / people who want that are better off saying who, what with and how it works

Otherwise I doubt people will take a leap of faith and yes we’ll stick with status quo

Not that I think it will end - but some posters do say they want a republic before they die etc

How come Bastille Day in Paris has huge processions, march past, cannons, fly pasts, cavalry, it's broadcast live on TV and attracts huge crowds. Yuk. Little Napoleon waving at the head of it. Sounds like Putin's Russia.

Come on derxa you're better than that - we will give you pageantry don't worry and fly pasts. In previous posts I've posited that Charles would be the last monarch first President for a transitional period of 5 years (if he would graciously grant that).

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/01/2023 12:14

... no income from tourists attracted to Royal occasions

Admittedly the "occasion" crowds would go - jubliees, weddings and such - but then after the coronation there won't be many of those to sell for quite a while

Not sure why the rest would drop though, with admissions to royal premises, etc ... in fact with them open for much more of the year it would be likely to increase

AttentionAll · 25/01/2023 12:22

@MarshaBradyo I have suggested an alternative system. Usual recruitment process for top level appointments allied with a public vote on shortlisted candidates to be done at the same time as general election to minimise costs.
That way the character of the person will be checked out - no associations with paedophiles allowed - and someone can be shortlisted based on their skill set to do the job. They would get a salary, clothing allowance, use of an apartment in London and another house with some rooms for entertaining in the country. Driver and chauffeur, and some staff - but not the 150 Charles is rumoured to have. They can do annual reports to Parliament about their work that is screened on TV. And there would be a process for removal for misconduct in office.

They would not be a celebrity like William and Kate, but someone more Presidential who just got on with the job without showing off their kids and briefing against family members. It would be far more quiet and dignified than the current soap opera spectacle.

@Puzzledandpissedoff If the aim is to make money there are lots of opportunities. Sleep for a night in the bed the Queen slept. You could charge an absolute fortune. Afternoon tea in the Palace. Get married like a Royal with a reception at the Palace.
And you could easily replace current occasions with made up ones. So a Royal Family Appreciation Day (after they no longer exist) with a type of Edinburgh Tattoo and arrival by traditional coaches of the deposed Royal Family members who want to take part. Could be an annual occasion designed to appeal to foreign tourists held at traditionally low tourist season times. Royal Albert Hall could hold a concert on the theme that mimics Last Night at the Proms. etc etc.

derxa · 25/01/2023 12:32

Sleep for a night in the bed the Queen slept. Completely tasteless

Great post - they could have a modern apartment in Buckingham Palace with the rest being used for state visits / tourist attractions. We would still have Presidential garden parties - that said I would like to have Buckingham Palace Gardens open as a new public park for London that would be open acess when not required for state occasions.

So all the recruitment processes currently in place for top level appointments mean we never have unsuitable candidates? Really?

Who is 'Little Napoleon'? Is it Macron and is he another one you don't like? He can go on your list with David Attenborough by the sounds of it.
You are sounding very anti French to be honest.

The Presidential election process would be single transferable vote with 2 candidates standing in the final runoff. So to win they would have to have over 50% of the voters who bothered to vote.

Provided Albo gets a second term, he's committed to calling a referendum on becoming a republic.

It's time. I'm particularly keen given our history (invasion day tomorrow), and the opportunity this presents to create the future Australia, one which is inclusive to our Indigenous peoples.

I'm a fan of the royal family, but that's the past now for Australia.

beachcitygirl · 25/01/2023 12:40

@BadgerB NO. I don't think it's taking it too far. Not far enough actually.
They are literally deems better, more worthy, given riches & abundance due to their bloodline.

Even when that bloodline is interrupted they still plow on pretending to be anointed by god. Literally due to an accident of birth. Our current royal family only in place because the nazi abdicated or they would be nobodies.

It's vile.

vera99 · 25/01/2023 12:53

Edward 8 was an actual traitor that should have been hung whilst 'Lord Haw Haw' for lesser crimes actually was. Being a Royal is a get out of jail card - sounds familiar ? My dad who did active service used to listen to him along with his compatriots for a laugh.

asblackasyoursoul · 25/01/2023 12:54

So was slavery.

They are apart of Britain's identity, culture and history.

Previous response was in reply to this

AttentionAll · 25/01/2023 12:56

@YellowMonday I hope other countries all ditch the royal family.

....and infinitely more boring.... You've seen the sort of people we elect? Nuff said

AttentionAll · 25/01/2023 14:51

@BadgerB But that is all we need if it is to meet Heads of State and dignataries.

It would cover basic "needs" no doubt, but we would lose so much. History, pageantry, tourist attraction. The late Queen's funeral has been followed all over the world. I would hate to lose such history & tradition.
And I don't mind the "showing off" of kids either.

I'm astonished at the level of fawning, sycophantic hysteria around a family who are super privileged, have lives of extraordinary luxury all funded by the tax payers,
whilst we have food banks and homeless, NHS on its knees and an energy crisis, not to mention impending catastrophic global warming and a government intent on investment in fossil fuels. Yet the country has to grind to a halt because the queen dies at 96 and any disent risks arrest.
It actually makes me very angry.

I totally agree. I'd have more respect for them if they actually helped people but they don't.

Elior · 30/05/2023 15:13

We need to ditch them and bring in a model like the Irish one.
However, it needs to be done very carefully. One thing infinitely worse and inferior to what we have now is the fantastic rubbish dreamed up by the Sussexes. That would be a giant step back from having a monarchy.

polkadotdalmation · 30/05/2023 15:37

@CriticalAlert So the Princes Trust which has helped 1 million disadvantaged youngsters since its set up, using prince charles naval pension, doesn't count? Or the duke of edinburgh's award scheme which helps young people achieve things they didn't realise possible, also pointless? The princess of Wales work with early years, will in the future probably help benefit families, and princess diana's work with Aids patients and landmines, also nada?

Don't be so delusional. It's a drop in the ocean and meant to show people like you that they appear to be doing something.

How odd that this has been dredged up so someone can agree with something someone else said in September last year.
I'd have thought that there were loads of more current comments expressing similar sentiments.
No, I'm not the thread police and anyone can dredge up old threads, of course. Just thought it was odd when I noticed the dates.
