It feels like we're being slowly prepared for her passing away. I feel unexpectedly tearful.

I just spoke to my nan, and she said when the "old king died" they were in school and the teachers announced the king's death and sent them all home, so they had the afternoon off.

Yes, but everything closed and people were supposed to stay home and mourn. In those days, Good Friday was always like that (according to my late mother).

reesewithoutaspoon · 08/09/2022 14:40

They wouldnt announce anything surely until all the family have gathered. Watching the news and feels very much like they are having to guard their words.

What kind of protocols are there following the queens passing - what can we expect to see and happen?

Sounds bad. Imminent perhaps?

It's extremely detailed, and quite fascinating

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/09/2022 14:41

6pm news I reckon.

a sad day

Nat6999 · 08/09/2022 14:41

Prince Charles will be on television at 6.00pm the day the Queen's death is announced if it is announced in the morning & will take the Oath the day after. He will then take a tour of the UK starting with Scotland & the funeral will take place 10 days later.

BuffaloCauliflower · 08/09/2022 14:42

@AlecTrevelyan006 they wouldn’t wait till a set news time. When the Queen dies every channel will stop and start reporting it immediately

midsomermurderess · 08/09/2022 14:43

Of course we are.

Yes I'd think so too, when Prince Phillip died, I had the radio on in the kitchen and it suddenly switched to an announcement stating his royal Highness Prince Phillip had passed away.

No, there's a set protocol. It isn't announced within minutes, Prime minister and heads of state are notified, news outlets are put on standby and the news isn't announced until a footman places a placard with the news at the gates of Buckingham Palace

SunflowerOrange · 08/09/2022 14:44

I was wondering if they'd wait til 6 or announce it once family are there.

And would the BBC be told behind the scenes or not?

Are all the family there now?

When my nan died it was several days after we were told to gather.

twilightcafe · 08/09/2022 14:44

I agree that it will be announced officially on the 6pm news. Give as many people as possible a chance to get home and watch the news on TV.

Actually I think it'll be far more controlled. May not wait until a specific news time, but loads has to happen before it's released to the world.

ILoveYoga · 08/09/2022 14:44

Very sad indeed and quite tearful. Such a lovely lady and of such character not really found today.

Herejustforthisone · 08/09/2022 14:45

I’d heard a few hours ago that she was dying as Charles had flown up. I think this is it now.

I felt quite a jolt. She’s been a constant in all our lives. I’m no monarchy fan but I do hold a deep respect and admiration for her, she’s been exquisitely dutiful and has shown affection, gumption and good humour in the last few years.

It will be strange day, like we’ve all lost a great aunt we never believed would die.

I feel very tearful too & have just said a prayer for the Queen..
Can I suggest that anyone with anything bad to say about her kindly fucks off? Thanks. Not the time nor the place.

I think that's unfair actually. Just scroll past if you don't like what you read.
Everyone has a right to their own feelings.

SunflowerOrange · 08/09/2022 14:46

It seems odd the news roll has changed from earlier - it was a news roll of the Queen at different places and now no news roll of the queen but its been the gates of Balmoral for a while...

tigger1001 · 08/09/2022 14:46

"Just a question wondering if anyone could answer- will businesses etc close ?"

Some may close. The day of the funeral will be a bank holiday I have read.

My place of employment wont though.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 08/09/2022 14:46

I’ve been weirdly tearful and I’m not really a royalist. She’s the last of the old school, the royal family won’t be the same now. There doesn’t seem to be the same regard and respect for the rest of them. She’s been the best ruler we’ve ever had and we’ll never see that again. She’s also our longest reigning monarch. I can’t imagine still working at the age of 96. I know she’s had great privilege but she’s also had great responsibility. She’s a mother, grandmother and great grandmother and loved and respected by most of the nation. It really is a very sad time.

He'll take a tour of the UK the day after his own Mother has died?!

CaveMum · 08/09/2022 14:47

@Herejustforthisone Charles and Camilla have been staying in the grounds at Balmoral for the last few days so were already there. William has flown up and the others are en route.

kateandme · 08/09/2022 14:47

Sign outside cancelling the guards change over

Herejustforthisone · 08/09/2022 14:47

And yes, they’ll sit on the information as long as possible. There is a huge amount to prepare. It will be a considered and controlled release. Every media outlet is on standby with her long-since-prepared obituary.

SoupDragon · 08/09/2022 14:47

I think it's really distasteful to be speculating that she's actually died and it will be announced on the news.

i mean, she's 96 and getting frailer by the day but taking the speculation to that level is really horrible.

gatehouseoffleet · 08/09/2022 14:48

Yes that's exactly it.

Why, there's already a plan for this and they probably won't announce until the immediate family are at Balmoral.

Charlie will be on at 6pm.
