It feels like we're being slowly prepared for her passing away. I feel unexpectedly tearful.

I hope her grandchildren really soak her up and realise how lucky they are to be with her, say anything that’s been left unsaid, say their goodbyes etc (if this is the end that is).

My grandmother passed just weeks ago and us grandchildren were not allowed to see her, not even when she was poorly in hospital in the days leading up to her passing. Didn’t get to speak to her, tell her we love her, say goodbye, hold her, kiss her. I belief that has exacerbated our grief and it’s all because of this god damn covid that many have had umpteen vaccines for.

I really hope that soak up every last bit of her.

Goldpaw · 08/09/2022 14:27

But she looked okay only yesterday? surely she wouldn't be up and working is she was at death's door?

My father was like this, frail but able. Then one day I visited him and he was in bed, obviously very unwell and about to die. Which he did a couple of days later.

DeadButDelicious · 08/09/2022 14:27

I think so too the news readers sound like they are shocked and struggling

I don't think anyone was expecting this today. I expect they thought they were going to be picking apart the energy announcement for the rest of the day and then it's all changed. Hugh Edwards is wearing a black suit and tie and the sign language guy is all in black. They're expecting it. It's awfully strange. I feel a lot more shocked than I thought I would. Probably because we just saw her the other day and whilst she looked quite frail, she seemed in good spirits. But is can go like that sometimes. My Grandad was 93 when he died and it took a few days for him to eventually pass away, my grandmothers however both passed quite unexpectedly and quickly. Strange day. Very strange day.

Another reporter in black

It happens very frequently this way.

Yes I agree, or she had "the surge" as they call it, when someone nearing the end gets a unexpected sort of little burst of energy.

Or she's had something like a stroke and it's a bit out of the blue.

SunflowerOrange · 08/09/2022 14:29

I wondered if she'd passed. If she had you wouldn't want to announce it until the family are together. But would we ever know. Its so strange how in this media world of today news is so "live" compared to how her reign started.

If she had actually passed would they actually tell the BBC or would they infer it?

Would we ever know.

I loved how respectful and graceful the Royal correspondent was.

Thanks for the info on Operation Unicorn. Would Prince Charles be crowned straight away?

It's feeling very sombre on the BBC. I think she may have already passed. It seems like they know and are waiting for the go ahead to announce it.

The intant the Queen dies, Charles is king.

The coronation would happen later, but he is king before that.

expandabandband · 08/09/2022 14:24

Me too. School? The local agricultural show on Saturday?

I just spoke to my nan, and she said when the "old king died" they were in school and the teachers announced the king's death and sent them all home, so they had the afternoon off.

So I imagine some things might be cancelled during the week of mourning like sporting events and such. Schools I hope will remain open, but you never know.

I really hope though, in the current economic climate, that they realise a coronation full of pomp and ceremony would be incredibly tone deaf. I really hope that whoever plans his coronation, when it comes, recognises the need for restraint.

SunflowerOrange · 08/09/2022 14:32

Yes I've never experienced a royal mourning so no idea what we'd be expected to do or not do.

workiskillingme · 08/09/2022 14:32

I feel like the reporters are having to very conscious of what they are saying

TheSpottedZebra · 08/09/2022 14:32

ohidoliketobe · 08/09/2022 14:17

Yes - it's the protocol for if the Queen dies at Balmoral with 'Unicorn' being in relation to the Scottish insignia, not mythical!

That makes sense, but a unicorn! It has soooo many other connotations now! She deserves a code name with more gravitas!

I couldn’t disagree more.

DowningStreetParty · 08/09/2022 14:33

Oh goodness.. I know we have to expect the Queen’s passing at some point but she has been such a constant presence for us and such a model of duty (in contrast to recent politicians). Very sad news.

Couldnothappenlater · 08/09/2022 14:33

I don't think it will be long before she is with her strength and stay once more.

Very sad news, feel very tearful hearing the announcements today x

Local government / council employees get the rest of the day off work.

It isn't disrespectful to state what she has done...

loobylou10 · 08/09/2022 14:37

@TwinGirlsOnTheWay you might think that. I think there is a time and a place - this is neither.

Tonty · 08/09/2022 14:37

CaptainBarbosa · 08/09/2022 14:05

Catherine has remained at Windsor with the children, a wise move I think, they will want their mum if their nan passes away. Not a job for the paid nanny to do is it, to announce their grandmother's death and answer questions/support the children through grief.

The queen isn't their grandmother. She's their great-grandmother. No need to over-egg the custard.

yes definitely, and Huw Edwards has used to the past tense a few times. The way the BBC coverage is focussed on the gates of Balmoral and BP definitely suggests they are waiting for an announcement. Apparently Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh has closed......

christmas2022 · 08/09/2022 14:38

What kind of protocols are there following the queens passing - what can we expect to see and happen?

Sounds bad. Imminent perhaps?

mamabear715 · 08/09/2022 14:38

I feel very tearful too & have just said a prayer for the Queen..
Can I suggest that anyone with anything bad to say about her kindly fucks off? Thanks. Not the time nor the place.
