A positive and non-bashing thread about Meghan and Harry

I have rejoined Mumsnet after leaving a few times. The first time I left was because I was concerned about the coverage and uncomfortable undertone of the commentary on Meghan Markle after the engagement was announced, before she had said a word, and before she had married into the Royal Family.

I came back around the time she and Harry left the UK, to be stunned by the pages and pages upon pages of virulent threads. At that time Mumsnet actually banned all threads about Meghan, it had become so toxic.

They have now made their lives in Montecito, but still the virulence continues. Yes, she speaks in a mix of therapy plus corporate gobbledegook, yes, she is occasionally vapid and irritating.

But who is she actually harming that she deserves all this virulence?

Yesterday, when the new UK Prime Minister was elected, the coverage in the Super Tory Daily Mail was all about a seven minute speech to a bunch of young people. Article after article after article. Body language experts. Counting the number of times she said "I" in a speech in which she sought to inspire young people by attempting to relate to them. Before that, 18 articles were devoted to the first podcast by the Daily Mail alone. 18!

Same with her podcasts. The series is about HER and HER take on labels, and she discusses HER take with HER guests.

It's all very anodyne, even vanilla. It does not deserve any of the vitriol sent her way.

SO:

As the next twelve weeks are going to be wall to wall Meghan, and the Meghan haters and detractors have several threads here that fill up rapidly with bile, scorn and mockery, I have started this thread, reminiscent of previous " positive" threads, to talk about what some of us like, enjoy, find amusing and even (gasp) admire, in the next few Meghan rich weeks.

If you don't have anything positive to say, that's okay, you can keep to the existing threads.

Looking forward to a bile-free discussion of everything Meghan!

To me Meghan and Harry are of no interest whatsoever.

They are no longer working royals, they moved to the USA so why exactly should we bother with what they have to say or what they do at this point?

I believed they supposedly wanted a quiet life and to be masters of their own fate. As far as I am concerned they got everything they wanted and should be counting their blessings and enjoying their new life abroad. They have two lovely kids, wealth and health. So many people would love to have their charmed life.

So why on earth should we be listening to and paying attention to their constant whining, attention-seeking, headline-grabbing and general nonsense?

They have achieved very little in their lives of real value and don't have any real talents so I am not quite sure why they think their views are of importance to the rest of the world at this stage...

If Meghan is an example of someone who has achieved nothing in her life then I would love to have achieved nothing in my life.

@onlylarkin

sometimes they’re a little tight too. The white coat at the jubilee was a little tight across the top so didn’t sit right.

its all down to tailoring.

Wasn't that because there was a microphone underneath it? 😉

onlylarkin · 09/09/2022 22:12

@MarshaMelrose

I guess a microphone would need baggy clothing to cover. Maybe she needs to talk with spy agencies to get recommendations on what they use for future reference. 😂

A body! Arghhhhh that gives me flashbacks of nights in club toilets!

I saw this post out of context and was quite alarmed! 😄 😄

steppon · 09/09/2022 22:55

She’s pretty and I really like some of her outfits, but she doesn’t have a great figure. It must’ve been difficult standing next to Kate though, she’s so slim and elegant

What's wrong with Meghans figure? They are both very slim & elegant.

Who’s due up on the Archetype podcast on Tuesday?

Do we think it will at be postponed?

SpinCityBlues · 09/09/2022 23:24

I really think posters should leave Meghan's body alone. It's weird.

I don't know - not seen any announcement or news about it yet.

MarshaMelrose · 09/09/2022 23:26

I think this thread has been so nice, just following a nice, easy going chat.

onlylarkin · 10/09/2022 00:10

I also wonder about this week's podcast. If it is not postponed, it will be out of her control, though I am sure she will get torn down about it in the press. I am still shocked that every time I open the news today I am seeing stories about H & M. OMG! Harry left Scotland (as did Charles and William, just at different times). OMG! Meghan and Harry wont leave England right now! (so?) Though, for the most part, the press is rightly focused on the Queen and King Charles.

As for who is next? I am not sure. I am excited about the Lisa Ling episode as I have been a fan of hers for many years.

I also must say, I love how Meghan and Harry use black and white photos so often. I am an amateur photographer and B&W photography is my favorite. You see so much of the subject that you maybe would not see in a color photos. Especially the texture in nature.

onlylarkin · 10/09/2022 00:23

I just looked, it may be Constance Wu and the label Dragon Lady for next week. Not sure if the article that leaked the guests has them in the correct order or not.

HeddaGarbled · 10/09/2022 01:22

I wonder if there’s someone going through it now to remove the “I never experienced (whatever this week’s topic is) until I started dating my husband”.

onlylarkin · 10/09/2022 02:20

Probably not. And unless you grew up bi-racial in the US, maybe you can allow her to talk about her experience with that.

If you are unaware of the challenges of growing up bi-racial in the US, Google can be a wealth of information.

I get that! It was the damn poppers!
Thanks all for the brief respite and nice chat, most welcome. It's like the kicking of a football to each other during the War Christmas Day truce,! (You must look it up if you think Ive lost the plot here!)

I haven't read the articles but Twitter tells me the DFail are being relentless in their publication of nasty H&M articles. You think they'd just take a breather for a short while wouldn't you...but no, clickbait the hell out of H&M within a day of the Queen dying

MrsMaxDeWinter · 10/09/2022 06:04

The Daily Mail have written that Charles told Harry that Meghan should not come with him to Balmoral. If true, it can only have come from Charles's people, which strikes such a sour note after his warm and moving speech last night. Plus ca change, and all that I guess.

They are also going with the twisted narrative that only Harry arrived after the Queen died, even though it is clear only Charles and Anne were with her in her final moments.

Again, plus ca change.

This thread has been a great respite, am enjoying the good natured posts (well most of them!)

I think Margaret Cho - I enjoyed her conversation with Mindy Kaling. It was interesting and actually quite fascinating re: ugly duckling and being a loner.

The body !! Did anyone ever have too much drink and couldn’t do up the poppers and end up with the “ tail” flapping around outside their jeans ? No ? Just me then …….

It has been really pleasant and good natured. It’s been slow but I’ve noticed the slow build of narrative that Harry was the only one who didn’t make it when it seems neither did Andrew, Edward and William. Which is a shame.

skullbabe · 10/09/2022 07:19

Not just you 😂

I am impressed with the people.who undid the poppers. I used to ahem move the section aside.

They have opposite figures - Kate is low-waisted and short-legged, Meghan is high-waisted and long-legged. Neither perfect but both better than mine!

Daily Mail twist things. I suspect Harry wanted Meghan to come, she thought just he should go, and Charles agreed with her. Otherwise they'd have had Zara, Peter, Eugenie, Beatrice plus all their spouses etc!

Roussette · 10/09/2022 07:48

"The body !! Did anyone ever have too much drink and couldn’t do up the poppers and end up with the “ tail” flapping around outside their jeans ? No ? Just me then"

Yes depending on how many sips of wine I'd had!

I am impressed with the people.who undid the poppers. I used to ahem move the section aside

I tried! But I am quite long in the body, it was very stretched and it would ping open! And this is why I spent so long in the loo on club night!

I did like the look of them though....

The others were a near miss, and might have made it. He was somewhat later than that - so he was nowhere near making it, which it was much more obvious and the first to be commented on (was his arrival after the public announcement?)

And we'll never know why he travelled separately. I think the point is as much about the separation, rather than who was how much too late. He missed the short window of time together as a family before the world knew. And that's a shame.

No word from the Sussexes on whether it's going to be Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, as they can now use the royal style as they are grandchildren of a monarch, so (like Wessexes) the parents can choose to use or not.

Presumably Harry will be staying on until after the funeral - I'm guessing the working royals will be cancelling all planned engagements until afterwards, and he'll have to choose whether to follow suit or continue with his European itinerary.
