A positive and non-bashing thread about Meghan and Harry

I have rejoined Mumsnet after leaving a few times. The first time I left was because I was concerned about the coverage and uncomfortable undertone of the commentary on Meghan Markle after the engagement was announced, before she had said a word, and before she had married into the Royal Family.

I came back around the time she and Harry left the UK, to be stunned by the pages and pages upon pages of virulent threads. At that time Mumsnet actually banned all threads about Meghan, it had become so toxic.

They have now made their lives in Montecito, but still the virulence continues. Yes, she speaks in a mix of therapy plus corporate gobbledegook, yes, she is occasionally vapid and irritating.

But who is she actually harming that she deserves all this virulence?

Yesterday, when the new UK Prime Minister was elected, the coverage in the Super Tory Daily Mail was all about a seven minute speech to a bunch of young people. Article after article after article. Body language experts. Counting the number of times she said "I" in a speech in which she sought to inspire young people by attempting to relate to them. Before that, 18 articles were devoted to the first podcast by the Daily Mail alone. 18!

Same with her podcasts. The series is about HER and HER take on labels, and she discusses HER take with HER guests.

It's all very anodyne, even vanilla. It does not deserve any of the vitriol sent her way.

SO:

As the next twelve weeks are going to be wall to wall Meghan, and the Meghan haters and detractors have several threads here that fill up rapidly with bile, scorn and mockery, I have started this thread, reminiscent of previous " positive" threads, to talk about what some of us like, enjoy, find amusing and even (gasp) admire, in the next few Meghan rich weeks.

If you don't have anything positive to say, that's okay, you can keep to the existing threads.

Looking forward to a bile-free discussion of everything Meghan!

Simon cowell is known for high waisted trousers. I said he would be proud to wear them. Very different to the words you’re trying to attribute to me.

the reality is that Meghan has a short body and this outfit emphasised it. The gap between the bottom of her chest and the top of the trousers was too short and didn’t make the most of her figure (she has gorgeous shoulders and ankles which the trousers hid - her Stella wedding dress had a similar halter neck and that was fabulous - a halter neck semi fitted midi dress would have rocked)

if she’d trussed her chest up a few inches with a very firm support bra it might have helped and trimmed top baggy bit above the belt, she would have looked far better

if anyone wants to post pictures of them in their high waisted trousers, I’m happy to give some pointers 🤣🤣🤣

@LoveHamble

it was general fashion advise re high waistband for (I didn’t reference her in the post) but feel free to ignore me

It's a misogynist post, extremely nasty, and aimed solely at women.

Serenster · 09/09/2022 19:38

Love this look

Just for you, Roussette - fashion nirvana? 😀

(Here’s a great example of Meghan wearing a pair of trousers perfect for her shape. And short-waisted is just a description of her shape, not an insult. Her sister-in-law by contrast has a long waist. Both come with challenges if you are keen to have photos of you looking flattering - and both of them get it wrong, from time to time, in my opinion).

I personally don't like the trussed up all tits look, prefer naturalle whereas I'm two boiled eggs in a pair of socks

Not sure what's wrong with this

Roussette · 09/09/2022 19:43

Wowsers "serenster* just love that look. Thank you

Tierne · 09/09/2022 19:45

I actually have the exact same figure as Meghan and in fairness it's quite a tricky shape to dress: things that are too slimline add shortness and thickness to the middle, but things that are too loose over accentuate the small limbs

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 19:49

That look is fabulous on Meghan that serenter posted, she should look that fabulous all the time.
Meghan is beautiful, she has a lovely figure but needs to dress to suit it. I wish she’d wear her hair down more too like in that photo

The looser slightly unbuttoned shirts and skirts looked fabulous with her legs too.

Serenster · 09/09/2022 19:50

And, for balance, here’s Catherine getting it all wrong for her long-waisted shape - she’s made it look like she’s 80% torso with incredibly short legs!

She’s pretty and I really like some of her outfits, but she doesn’t have a great figure. It must’ve been difficult standing next to Kate though, she’s so slim and elegant.

TarasChoc · 09/09/2022 19:52

I think Meghan always looks fab, she is very pretty has great hair and glowing skin. Sometimes she wows more than others but that's the case with many people in the spotlight. I think she looks best or maybe just most at ease in casual stuff but I think she'd probably look better in a bin bag than I would with my most effort put in. Harry often looks a bit dishevelled besides her. If we were been shallow enough to judge on looks she's way out of his league.
Personality wise they're well matched given how quickly and easily they disposed of family they were once so close to and how they both thought it acceptable to marr the last year's of am elderly couples life by continually airing grievances in public.
I doubt many of the fan girls on here would be forgiving if it were thei family and certain members were crass enough to take to Facebook to wash their dirty linen.

She is the one that can wear casual shirts like no one else

The top has rucked up creating folds and the trousers have pleats which result in too much fabric. What looks good in the mirror doesn't always translate to photographs. A more streamlined look would have suited better and photographed better.

My comment is not nasty just an opinion on clothes.

I think you forgot the link

Roussette · 09/09/2022 19:55

I haven't a clue still looking for MY style 60 plus years on

Serenster · 09/09/2022 19:56

Both Meghan and Catherine have/have had the BMI of a top model but neither of them have the perfectly balanced proportions that make top models true clothes horses, I don’t think (and that’s totally okay! Most people don’t either!). It just means they can’t wear everything they like and expect it to really look amazing on them. So say we all…😉

LoveHamble · 09/09/2022 19:57

Found it 🙄 , and yes the dress waist and neckline aren't right.

Roussette · 09/09/2022 19:58

Shorts! I meant shorts!

when you look at slight differences in her wedding halter neck below - armholes, material, fit, it suited her far better than the one you posted rousette.

I call them boulder holders but I’m not talking you being able to rest your chin on your chest but a little lift

I just loved the whole look because I like palazzo pants type thing

But that dress is haute couture, not off the peg which makes a huge difference to fit. Unless you're clever like Catherine and get your off the peg clothes tailored and fitted, which is what she does, I'm sure.

My DD saw Kate Moss once in a situation where she could really look. She said she was stunning, figure, ethereal face, just amazing

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 20:07

I love high waisted trousers, but I can’t wear the paper bag style ones anymore,

I’ve a 12 year old with a short body and long limbs and I just smile and say nothing when she does the Simon Cowell pulling up trousers thing.

Serenster · 09/09/2022 20:08

I get the point being made about the Düsseldorf ensemble - I’ve posted below the look I assume Meghan was aiming for along with a shot that shows where it didn’t quite come off.

I think the top needed to be a body - ugh! 😀 but necessary to really nail the sleek top half that the voluminous pants called for - as normal tops just ride up on bodies that move around (rather than staying perfectly tucked in for, say, a posed photo shoot, I mean).

It's really difficult to wear separates when you have this body shape IMO. The thing that works best for me is skater dresses which give the illusion of a longer torso while disguising the lack of a swooping waistline, and tight trousers with long line tops. Unfortunately for meghan these kinds of styles dont work for a "royal" wardrobe

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 20:11

@LoveHamble

I think she should get her clothes tailored. It would make all the difference to her outfits.
