A positive and non-bashing thread about Meghan and Harry

I have rejoined Mumsnet after leaving a few times. The first time I left was because I was concerned about the coverage and uncomfortable undertone of the commentary on Meghan Markle after the engagement was announced, before she had said a word, and before she had married into the Royal Family.

I came back around the time she and Harry left the UK, to be stunned by the pages and pages upon pages of virulent threads. At that time Mumsnet actually banned all threads about Meghan, it had become so toxic.

They have now made their lives in Montecito, but still the virulence continues. Yes, she speaks in a mix of therapy plus corporate gobbledegook, yes, she is occasionally vapid and irritating.

But who is she actually harming that she deserves all this virulence?

Yesterday, when the new UK Prime Minister was elected, the coverage in the Super Tory Daily Mail was all about a seven minute speech to a bunch of young people. Article after article after article. Body language experts. Counting the number of times she said "I" in a speech in which she sought to inspire young people by attempting to relate to them. Before that, 18 articles were devoted to the first podcast by the Daily Mail alone. 18!

Same with her podcasts. The series is about HER and HER take on labels, and she discusses HER take with HER guests.

It's all very anodyne, even vanilla. It does not deserve any of the vitriol sent her way.

SO:

As the next twelve weeks are going to be wall to wall Meghan, and the Meghan haters and detractors have several threads here that fill up rapidly with bile, scorn and mockery, I have started this thread, reminiscent of previous " positive" threads, to talk about what some of us like, enjoy, find amusing and even (gasp) admire, in the next few Meghan rich weeks.

If you don't have anything positive to say, that's okay, you can keep to the existing threads.

Looking forward to a bile-free discussion of everything Meghan!

Now the Queen has gone, I just hope Harry doesn’t have any regrets about the way his relationship with the royal family has played out over the past few years. There’s nothing worse than regrets when it’s too late.

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 15:43

the hysterics by certain posters defending their champion. Champion of milking her 18 months for money, not a lot else.

The cream outfit - high waisted trousers that Simon cowell would be proud of and a lack of support in the chest area which meant her chest practically rubbed off the top of the trousers due to her very short body

Her shoulders looked nice though.

I love love love high waisted trousers, I can wear them now I've lost 3 stone.
I imagine you'd think I'm channelling Simon Cowell too, as well as Meghan

So pleased you liked her shoulders despite the trousers and the droopy tits 🙄

I loved the outfit

lllllllllll · 09/09/2022 15:45

I also loved Meghan’s red outfit - it was stunning.

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 15:45

if you can tuck your tits in your waistband it’s not a good look for anyone !

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 15:49

The red outfit was better, the waist was slightly off but the scarf was straight from Fire saga, I’m surprised Graham Norton didn’t shout ‘the scarf, watch the scarf from the audience.

Are you this bitchy about other famous people?
I have never spoken about another woman like this in my life especially not on a forum, even anyone I dont like
I'm curious, is this normal for you??.

Ihaveanoldiphone · 09/09/2022 15:52

Bloody hell some people are so bitchy (towards Meghan) Body shaming etc. This thread has been very insightful! Thank you!

You've lost 3 stone! That's bloody impressive. Well done you!
Sadly, I think I know where they've gone. 😢

Ohnonevermind You are on fire today (laughing out loud at your posts especially the Fire Saga ones 😀).

@MaulPerton
I thought your persona on here was ' detached curiosity'

You had me fooled until recently

Ihaveanoldiphone · 09/09/2022 15:55

Exactly, it’s actually making my skin crawl, I don’t think I even heard the bitchiest girls at school bitch about people like this. Nor have I seen such comments on mumsnet before. Maybe I need to look on more Meghan threads to get a real idea of where the bitching is concentrated. I think mumsnet should do some research as to what proportion of those comments are directed towards non meghans and which are. I’d love to see the results.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 09/09/2022 15:57

@Ohnonevermind

I hate lying and I don’t like liars. These include Donald Trump, Boris Johnson and Megan Markle. Other people don’t seem to mind lying, that’s their business

Boris Johnson misled the Queen into proroguing Parliament, misled his own ministers and party about all manner of things, from Covid parties to what he knew about sexual assaults by his whip, eventually costing him his job. Donald Trump lied to a degree that he caused an insurrection and almost caused a constitutional crisis. He is currently being investigated by the FBI.

Meghan said she got married in a garden, when she meant she and her husband exchanged private vows. She also misled the court on a point that had no bearing at all on the merits of a court case that she won against the Daily Mail.

How are these the same thing!?

I don’t like how she has tried to paint the U.K. as racist

Newsflash, as a black woman, my experience of the UK is that it IS racist. As a mother, I have been careful to teach my children how to deal with racism, overt and covert, especially as they will meet white people like you who are blind to their own biases.

Consider for instance, why you would use false equivalence to compare Meghan with two powerful white men whose lies had very real consequences, constitutional consequences, in the countries they led?

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 15:57

you will not the ‘if you can’ implies a hypothetical’ point, not a personal point,
which isn’t directed at you or anyone.

I don’t know why you are taking a point personally again. It’s really boring now

MarshaMelrose · 09/09/2022 15:59

This thread asks only people who want to say nice things about Meghan and Harry to post. I don't understand why people can't respect that. It's just one thread.

In the same way, why can't there be a thread where posters can be (politely) critical of them and other people are constantly on there telling posters off for having critical opinions.

Then people can just enjoy themselves without having to snipe at each other or be defensive all the time.

Thank you Marsha.... I'm not going to pretend it was anything but a hard slog, but I feel health wise so much better for it. In my life, I've been a size 20+ and a size 8 and all sizes in between 🤣. I think for once, I'm now at the size I should be, size 14.

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 16:06

@Ihaveanoldiphone

you clearly didn’t read the ones accusing other royals of eating disorders and affairs and sex acts and non missing wedding rings

you’ve lead a very sheltered mumsnet existence

Fundays12 · 09/09/2022 16:07

Not a fan of Megan as I don’t like he constant publicity stunts but she always looks amazing. The woman could wear a tent and still look good.

Yes. Especially as there are plenty of threads having a real go at them, to go on. Why this one? derailment

Ohnonevermind · 09/09/2022 16:09

@MarshaMelrose

the problem was bitching about people and their comments on other threads. They can’t have it both ways.

You haven't answered my question about whether you are bitchy about other famous women, celebrities, members of the RF in the same way as you are Meghan.
Simon Cowell trousers, tits she could tuck in her waistband etc. Is it just Meghan you talk about like this, or anyone else in real life or famous?

Roussette · 09/09/2022 16:14

And just to follow up on that... the very worst I have said about Kate's dress sense is... A line doesn't suit me, so I am not so keen on the tea dress, A line, bow look. However, she can carry it off.

Apart from that, I think she often looks wonderful, really wonderful. And this is coming from a non Royalist.

Gosh don't want to derail... but a quick resume...

3 stone, took 10 months.
Walked every day, could only manage 2 miles to start with, now 5.
I don't like breakfast so did 16/8 (eat for 8 hours, don't eat for 16)
Cut out bread and pasta my downfall. Had a bit of rice and small portion of potatoes. Lots of veg etc, usual thing
Used MyFitnessPal to track calories until I'd re-educated myself on what I eat. Stopped that when I felt I'd learnt something, calorie counting is BORING.
Friday and Saturday night didn't restrict myself too much. Only had alocohol then.
I find maintaining the weight loss harder than losing it.

That's it.... sorry to derail !
