With another podcast set for release this week, The Sunday Times has a piece addressing Harry and Meghan's apparent strategy:

Courtiers are bemused by the Sussexes’ determination to rage against the past. As Davis observed of Meghan in her article: “She has taken a hardship and turned it into content.” A source who knows the Sussexes questions why Meghan “is constantly looking back at how awful it was to briefly be a royal. What does success look like, is it a number in the bank? Is it that they’ve killed off the monarchy?” Another Palace source says: “Ultimately they are bashing the institution that has put them in the position they’re in, the longevity of that strategy is not sustainable.”

I'm curious about their strategy, too. They seem to think that criticizing the royal makes them look better - it really doesn't. Instead, it just makes them look petty and increasingly irrelevant.

It's all well and good that H&M took a train for a couple of hours once but it hardly changes the narrative when just a week ago Harry took a private jet 1,000 miles just to play polo with his friends.

Ohnonevermind · 06/09/2022 09:46

yes, one world takes credit for the work done by people who attend their conferences which seems bonkers and how they justify their 500m+ of savings.

It sounds like a bit of a scam to be honest, but people are attending and the CEO and her family are raking in half a million a year to arrange a conference and then phone delegates and ask them what they’re doing to they can add the ‘savings’ to their spreadsheet

Have a watch and listen to the 3 key note speakers from this Reuters coverage of the event.

Robinson and Geldof are spectacular - they have knowledge, wisdom, intellect, gravitas….no one is concerned with what they are wearing or even their delivery because their content, past achievements and depth of authenticity blast through.

MM following on from them is tragic.

She speaks incessantly about herself and her husband.

V bizarre that she is introduced by Dave, the charity founder in the context of Spotify, Archetypes and Serena Williams - it’s ALMOST like this profiling of her commercial activities on a global platform was negotiated as central to her doing the speech …. as there was no promoting any commercial activities of Bob or Mary.

Also worth watching Bob in the background when MM is being introduced….

Its bizarre that she gets star billing ahead of Bob and Mary. I suspect that the commercial aspect of this charity saw the opportunity for reach in the news spotlight rather than giving their delegates on the ground anything of value.

And he lectures on climate change too. As does his father... endlessly and he's one of the worst for private jets.

Massive caveat here - that we know about. There is a whole group of elite sports people, business men, musicians etc that really do use private jets like the rest of us use a car. How do you think Lewis Hamilton gets to each F1 venue, back to his home in Monaco and to London for sponsorship commitments every week? How do you think Elton John and David Furnish move between LA, London and the South of France all the time? Mukesh Ambani, who you’ve probably never heard of but is one of the richest men in India, has two personal private jets.

So, the Royals aren’t the “worst”, they are just, as is often he case, the softest targets because unlike others, they are the most visible as they are more transparent about it. That goes for Meghan and Harry as well.

Snog · 06/09/2022 09:56

I think formula one is utterly indefensible and an obscene crime against climate change.
I'm don't hear Lewis Hamilton championing climate change though - or have I missed something?

Snog · 06/09/2022 09:58

How is it ok for Prince Harry to fly to play polo on a private jet because there are other individuals who make even more private jet trips than him???

MarshaMelrose · 06/09/2022 10:14

And just for your info... they came on a commercial flight, not a private jet.
Commercial flight. Train. Electric car.
But let's knock them for it.

They came on a commercial flight to the Jubilee, but went home on a private jet.

Harry drove an electric car to the airport to catch a private jet to a polo match. His clothes came separately in a gas guzzler. Very environmentally friendly! 🙄 And why aren't all his cars electric?

If I had the choice, I'd travel by private jet too. It must be great. But then I wouldn't be giving speeches, telling people when and where they can and can't go on holiday.

FoggyCrumpet · 06/09/2022 10:15

I've already forgotten half of what I watched late last night so do correct me, but she talked about a young woman she mentored when she started with the charity (?2014?) , how impressed she was with her and the struggles she had faced. It didn't sound as if she had kept in touch with her or followed her progress. Which I would have thought was the point of being a mentor.

I recall that Diana often kept in touch with people she met, and I know that Catherine and William have done so too.

Does anyone have any evidence of what Meghan has done for the charity or individual young people apart from. Making speeches or that contact with that one young person?

MarshaMelrose · 06/09/2022 10:16

So, the Royals aren’t the “worst”, they are just, as is often he case, the softest targets because unlike others, they are the most visible as they are more transparent about it.

I'm not aware, though, that Elton John has lectured me on not taking private jets and telling me where I can go on holiday.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/09/2022 10:30

They're registered in London so they're genuine and will be audited by the Charity Commission

So was Camilla Batmanghelidjh's Kids Company, where an awful lot of people were also blindsided by charisma (?), endless gobbledegook and a declared aim which few wanted to question

I'm absolutely not saying OneYoungWorld is a similar scam, but as ever it's worth watching out for meaningful effect rather than empty buzz phrases and self congratulation, especially when the management are taking quite so much money out of it

As for the question of what "$558m social value" means ... whatever they want it to

SilverLiningPlaybook · 06/09/2022 10:39

I don’t understand why there is so much discussion of what Meghan looked like at this event. What does it matter what she was wearing or how pretty she looked? She’s supposed to be supporting a charity event. Her speech and her role are what matter, not what she wears or how she looks.

CPL593H · 06/09/2022 10:45

I don't know enough about One World to comment fairly but I can't see how that speech could be viewed as even slightly adjacent to the theme of gender equality.

Snog · 06/09/2022 10:46

I suspect the charity itself is more invested in what Meghan looked like than in what she said

Snog · 06/09/2022 10:48

As requested by a previous poster it would be great if someone who thought the speech was good could sum up their key takeaway points.

FoggyCrumpet · 06/09/2022 10:54

She did do well to repeat "One Young World" several times without getting the words back to front. It's quite the tongue twister. Grin

HeddaGarbled · 06/09/2022 10:54

I'd hazard to guess that most 'under-privileged young people would prefer practical help

God, yeah, can’t have them enjoying themselves when there’s work to be done.

In principle I think it was good that they took the train. They get criticised for taking private jets so it isn't fair to also criticise them for taking public transport.

However in reality there is currently only one direct train an hour from London to Manchester. Trains are overcrowded and it's difficult to get booked. I hope that they only booked the number of seats needed - ie, one for each member of their party - and didn't block off extra seats for security/privacy. If they did it's tone deaf at a time when travel for people is so challenging.

I think there's zero chance that they didn't have an entire first class carriage at minimum for themselves and their entourage.

It is good that they took the train, but the issue is as others have said, that it's performative. They've got the Netflix cameras with them so they can show how eco conscious they are. But they take private jets left right and centre the rest of the time. So it's not that it's a bad thing that on this one occasion they took public transport, it's just that it doesn't warrant any particular praise because it's clearly for the optics, not something which is consistent with their behaviour normally.

SueSaid · 06/09/2022 10:57

'Robinson and Geldof are spectacular - they have knowledge, wisdom, intellect, gravitas….no one is concerned with what they are wearing or even their delivery because their content, past achievements and depth of authenticity blast through.'

Did they mention if they were there with their spouses? I'd guess not because it really shouldn't be relevant.

Is anyone else listening to the new podcast episode? I’m a huge fan of Mindy Kaling so I’m hoping it’s a good one.

I think the titles of the podcasts sound interesting but the content is dire.
I tried to listen to the second one but just could t get through it.

LateAF · 06/09/2022 11:24

I’m listening - it’s a great one. Mindy as always is just a joy to listen to. Best podcast yet so far by a long way. Conversation sounds more natural and something we can all relate to (dating and relationships).

HeddaGarbled · 06/09/2022 11:24

Here’s a blog from a young man who was sponsored by UCL in 2017. I appreciate that’s quite a long time ago, but I don’t care that much about this discussion to spend ages on research. I know nothing about the charity either. It just sounded like something that would have been a wonderful experience for the young people I worked with, so it seems a shame to dismiss it without finding out more about it, just because you’ve got a downer on everything associated with Meghan.

I’m guessing M is getting lots of references
in to ‘when I met my husband’.
