With another podcast set for release this week, The Sunday Times has a piece addressing Harry and Meghan's apparent strategy:

Courtiers are bemused by the Sussexes’ determination to rage against the past. As Davis observed of Meghan in her article: “She has taken a hardship and turned it into content.” A source who knows the Sussexes questions why Meghan “is constantly looking back at how awful it was to briefly be a royal. What does success look like, is it a number in the bank? Is it that they’ve killed off the monarchy?” Another Palace source says: “Ultimately they are bashing the institution that has put them in the position they’re in, the longevity of that strategy is not sustainable.”

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/harry-and-meghan-keep-bashing-the-monarchy-because-its-good-business-royals-believe-nq29p6g7z

I'm curious about their strategy, too. They seem to think that criticizing the royal makes them look better - it really doesn't. Instead, it just makes them look petty and increasingly irrelevant.

Seriously - the number of people being diagnosed with NPD on the internet

Ridiculous, yes, but unfortunately pretty standard on here
If it's not narcissism it's ADHD, ODD, PDA or some other alphabet soup - oh, or dementia - often with an insistence that the subject's "obviously" got it

Meanderings · 04/09/2022 17:38

H&M were quiet for a whole year after Jan 2020 before doing Oprah. In that time, the RF and their sources were relentless in their briefings and abuse. Never ending jibes about how the fallout was entirely Meghan's fault, they were going to have nothing, they would come crawling back, titles were going to be stripped(!), H&M were causing headaches while alleged rapist Andrew was the Queen's rock (yes that exists), Meghan was evil for taking Harry away. William was always incandescent with rage 😂

H&M had enough and went to Oprah. Good on them.

As for the Cut interview, utterly unnecessary but we move.

I can't wait for Tuesday's episode of Archetypes. Let's see what manufactured outrage abounds.

@Novella4

I know that you have posted and run but I think I will answer anyway.

‘One bloodline being superior’ well, yes, that’s a common assumption in monarchies. I think it was equally the case in China, certainly in Japan, in Nigeria. The inheritance of the right to be Caliph is one of the main causes of the Sunni Shia disagreement , I believe.

However, The ‘ superiority’ was probably based on one person being notably better at fighting and ruling than the others in his tribe, not on him or her being brown, yellow, white or having chestnut hair. The inheritors had to prove a similar competence, or they were overthrown

I know that you are very agitated about the ‘Empire’ but British Kingship in any National sense probably traces back to Athelstan, around the middle of the tenth century, so more than a thousand years ago. A great deal of the ceremonial and regalia of the British Crown was devised and made long before the Americas were ‘discovered’ by Europeans, and certainly before the British could claim any overseas territory with the possible exception of part of South western France, which was legitimately inherited through Eleanor of Aquitaine.

I find the idea that Britain has no history or tradition which predates the relationship with Non European countries quite offensive, tbh.

Informative posts like these are why I stay on MN.

We watched All the Presidents Men recently as it was being shown on Sky as it’s the 50th anniversary of Watergate this year. Sad to say I’m old enough to remember it happening at the time.

Me too. I was very confused cos I thought it was all about a dam near Washington which had burst. I wasn’t a very bright child.

That’s because she insulted white mothers by saying that they care less about their children than black women do, she seems to have trouble sorting her shoes out, and she can’t do simple sums before coming on the radio to talk about them. None of this is a recommendation if you want to be Home Secretary .

I don’t believe Diane has had more ‘abuse’ than Boris btw.

You may not believe it but it’s true.

www.politicshome.com/news/article/diane-abbott-faced-ten-times-the-abuse-of-other-mps-in-election-runup

I suspect that you are unaware of what an accomplished politician Diane is and that’s understandable, however like all politicians she has made mistakes. These mistakes however should not open her up to the significant abuse she receives.

I’m sure Boris has been on the receiving end of some abuse (which I’m sure most politicians have) but certainly not even close to the scale that women and those women who are also POC get.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/09/2022 17:47

Just for you, CPL593H Wink

I'm another old gimmer who well remembers Watergate, but now I'll have to watch the movie again (only in a spirit of research, you understand ...)

Kenneth McAlpin predates Athelstan.
he is regarded as the founder of modern Scotland.

british Kingship starts with James VI and I.

skullbabe · 04/09/2022 17:49

“I suppose you are actually referring to the British Empire, a long defunct institution which did not actually last very long?”

This is breathtaking.

it seriously reminds me of that last paragraph in “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe. My god.

Diane Abbott is a trailblazing and inspirational woman. She certainly doesn't get everything right but has tried to serve despite poor health and has a quite few more principles than many, cross party.

The abuse (not valid criticism) she has at times been subjected to is a disgrace.

Poor Meghan was not told the truth by Harry. He told her she would be Grace Kelly (who was miserable). What she should have looked at was Princess Anne.
previously second in line to the throne, Princess Anne rode in the Olympics with a concussion, had her police protection officer shot in a kidnapping attempt (it would have been more serious but she was extremely British and foiled his plan but saying “not bloody likely” when the wannabe kidnapper told her to get out of the car.

these days, Princess Anne, once the heir to the throne, cheerfully admires the back of new garbage trucks and talks to troops, backs Riding for the Disabled and generally gets on with life. And her life is good. She has a huge family who are all talking to her, her mother is alive and she is in her SEVENTIES - she has a beautiful house and being an Olympic sportswoman means she probably got to feel proud of her own achievements in life.

In the last four decades she has worked only really in the service of the queen. She does this smiling at bin lorries and stroking foals because being a royal (even if your mother is the monarch) means being a civil servant.

Your life as a civil servant in this instance is to show your royal stardust (such as it is - and as a Brit, you know darn well it ain’t stardust…) on the charities you work for. And to privately acknowledge you have a beautiful house, lovely children and a close knit family and no overdraft the way the Queen Mum did. And in return for such luck in your life, you admire the rear end of that bin lorry on a Tuesday morning. And you talk to every marine that did or did not enjoy their deployment. And you schlep to Catterick and talk to the cavalry about their horses even though they’re scarred for life, and you don’t skip services for marines because you prefer to talk to the Lion King about how they can use your voice.

harry never clarified to Meghan that her job would not be £60k dresses and paparazzi flash bulb and full on admiration. She never realised that she would might have Leeds in her future and opening a sausage factory might be her job of the week. The irony was the Royals weren’t glam enough for her. And fine! But no one told her. And Harry kept very quiet.

Ohnonevermind · 04/09/2022 17:59

I’ll be watching it myself too. Its such a great film and Robert Redford as a bonus 😍

Princess Anne, once the heir to the throne

What? Princess Anne was never heir to the throne! Charles is older than Anne by two years. She was second in line for 10 years until Andrew was born.

Meghan is not Princess Anne, or Diana (who she desperately wanted to be), no, Meghan is Fergie.

@skullbabe the one public thing we have all seen and aware of is that William and indeed the rest of the RF have briefed the press negatively themselves about H&M.

Can you provide rock solid proof of this?

You go on and on about Meghan not being given the protection that others were given yet that is demonstrably untrue - Camilla was given a rough ride by the press for a number of years as was Kate.

I was unaware that I gone on and on about it - as far as I know I have mentioned this once.

This is what Harry himself has said in Oprah interview.

The EasyJet story is a good one to start with.

Think you have hit the nail on the head!! I’m sure I heard Princess Anne also released that the Hollywood B lister would not really be able to hack being a second class royal and do all the boring mundane civil stuff. Unlike Anna who has worked her socks off for the last 55 years.

Even the USA press are getting feed up with her.

Certainly a possibility. I’m surprised it’s still up. A unique moment of unity on the thread which probably wasn’t the intention. Whichever side of the argument they are on it’s unacceptable behaviour.

Why “politely” request.
