The sad thing is that even if it was Lebo M, MM's tale doesn't match what actually happened.

If it was Lebo M she could have just said that the person from SA in the line up said. etc. and there would have been no issue.

@Novella4

here's another poll for you -published today

www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1660984/Meghan-Markle-popularity-teche-poll-royal-family-trust-prince-andrew-prince-harry-update

12% of the public consider Meghan trustworthy and 30% consider Harry trustworthy, compared to 81% for Catherine and 83% for William

I've never posted a poll.

They aren't reliable . Even one which puts Charlie at 42% unfortunately

NoName2223 · 01/09/2022 16:47

I took away two things from MM's interview in The Cut..

  1. She seems to have a very outdated, almost Disney, view of being a princess. And at odds with her supposed feminist credentials. In 2022 the likes of Princess Anne demonstrate what a "real-life princess" is/does, and it is not Disney/glamourous and I don't see any obvious appeal to "little girls". I suspect she had no idea what being a working royal really meant before she got married, and it is far removed from the celebrity lifestyle she had in mind. As a full-time working (in a male dominated industry) mother who is a proud feminist, I connect with absolutely nothing MM says or does. It seems to be all woke word salad and make-up and dresses.
  2. Regardless of who said what, and to whom, about comparing Mandela celebrations to those for her getting hitched, it was extremely poor judgement on her behalf to broadcast the anecdote, and implies (rightly or wrongly) that she actually believes her own hype. She has accidentally shown us who she is and it's hard to come back from such a massive faux pas.
As others have said, I really wish they would both retreat from public life and stop embarrassing themselves, and enjoy their wealth, health and family (as in their children), and I don't understand why they don't want to do that.
Serenster · 01/09/2022 16:48

The papers have of course been running off to transcribe the conversation on the red carpet between the Sussexes and Lebo M and have established he said “It’s an honour to meet you. Everyone in South Africa’s heard of Meghan Markle”. He then says “Oh fantastic” after Harry speaks of their upcoming official visit to South Africa”.

I wonder if that’s the kernel of truth behind Meghan’s comment?

Dull is absolutely fine. Life’s been way too exciting recently. I long for grey, boring dullness for a few years.

🤣🤣

susan12345678 · 01/09/2022 16:50

The polls seem to reflect what I've observed, anecdotally, on forums, newspaper comments and among people I speak to. Most take a pretty dim view of Andrew, Meghan and Harry, but like the Queen, Kate and William. Equally, people seem to have mixed opinions about Charles & Camilla, which is reflected in the polls.

As in political elections, Brexit, etc they may be out by a 2-3 percentage points, but that's a small margin - the overall indications are very accurate.

@Blossomtoes you and @susan12345678 are both misunderstanding the situation

Governments are elected .

Monarchies need a much higher level of 'support'than a government

Do they? I’d have said completely the reverse, given that none of us is ever likely to be given any say as to whether or not we have a monarchy.

Novella4 · 01/09/2022 16:51

That's exactly why they need fulsome support

Novella4 · 01/09/2022 16:52

You’re going to have to explain that. It makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Yes, I think that is indeed the kernel. Recollections do vary quite significantly it would seem.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/09/2022 16:55

(Lebo) says he can’t remember what they talked about - so neither a yes nor a no

A sensible man - it reminds me of when Justin Welby clarified when the actual wedding took place and otherwise left it largely at that

Still no evidence of where the media called Archie the N word though, so it looks as if the conclusion that his mum lied again is becoming unavoidable.
Unless of course it appeared in an edited headline of the sort used on Oprah?

I'm loving the posters whose view of the RF and British history is basically highlights from The Crown Grin It seems those 'this is fiction' disclaimers need to be much larger!

SilverLiningPlaybook · 01/09/2022 17:22

I honestly think Meghan lives in a world where she invents her own reality. I wonder if it’s something to do with being an only child from a broken home with parents of different ethnicities
. Perhaps she lived in her own head and just created her own reality. It can’t have been easy with both her parents going bankrupt either. Not a lot of security.

Cloud9isnowclosed · 01/09/2022 14:54

Either that, or Lebo regularly compares Mandela's release to a host of joyful events to the extent that it is difficult to recall which specific event he may or may not have referenced....

I doubt it very much.

Novella4 · 01/09/2022 17:29

@Blossomtoes

Modern day monarchy is in place due to the tacit acceptance of the people .

They have not been selected or voted for by anyone . They have no particular right to have all that they do. They need to be very secure in that tacit acceptance .
Once that starts to waver , they are finished .

Oh my goodness! I was thinking the same - some people really seem to think it's a documentary, don't they!

But was that not because she didn’t want to disrupt the rescue and recovery operation ?
I remember Aberfan very clearly and I recall that Prince Philip went first then HM visited a few days later.

Yes.

I did enjoy the one with Princess Alice (Philip's mother) although they didn't fully explore what an extraordinary woman she was. Righteous Among the Nations.

Yes, I once saw a documentary about her. She was a remarkable woman and very courageous, as you say.
I am quite liked the episode showing Philip as a boy, and the death of his sister.

Agree, the one about Philip's youth dealt with some very interesting (and sad) things every well.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 01/09/2022 16:05

Completely agree with you @Serenster .
I watched am documentary on Diana’s death the other day and suddenly saw everything from another perspective . Of course they wanted to stay in Balmoral and protect the boys. It’s sheer child abuse what those poor boys had to do in the aftermath. I was cringing at the scenes of them all outside the Palace gates interacting with the public, all screaming and weeping. At the time I was aghast that the Queen said nothing and stayed away. I see it all with different eyes now.

Yes, and when someone in the crowd shouted, "Look after the boys", Prince Philip said, either, "That's what we are doing" or "That's what we've been doing" and it had been like Beatlemania gone mad down in London all week, with that stupid twittering from folk who were enjoying mincing along with their flowers to prove how much they loved their Di and being interviewed by the TV, egged on by the papers. And we've had all these years of carping from people who also wouldn't have had a clue what was really the best way to help the boys.

His tough upbringing and determination. I've seen the footage of him following his sister's coffin - the only one not in Nazi regalia! He had an interesting life.

Unfortunately this is a standard view taken from trash TV and the movies where people believe Braveheart is history and The Da Vinci Code was true and flooded to see the sights. As John Ford said, ‘When a legend becomes fact, print the legend!’
