Why did Harry and Meghan walk in alone?

I have had a very busy weekend so have only been able to catch snippets of the jubilee weekend events but noticed how Harry and Meghan walked into the service together, seemingly after everybody else, including those sitting in front and behind them?
Why was this? I understand why they didn't walk in with the serving royals but it seemed strange that their entrance stood out so much.

Princess Margaret famously wore Dior (her stunning 21st birthday portrait) and Diana did post-divorce when John Galliano was at the helm, but in the last 30 years Meghan is the only working Royal to have worn Dior (Kate has worn Chanel, once, when in Paris, but never Dior).

So your genuine question, with no intention to be insulting whatsoever, to me is do I feel like Hyacinth Bouquet (it’s actually Bucket, by the way. 😉 ) for knowing about the luxury fashion market? My genuine response - no, not in the slightest.

No you got that wrong .

My question ( to paraphrase ) don't you feel a teeny bit Hyacinth 🪣 esque to be judging what someone wears, like this?

Its great they're moving to the British designer s now.

I don’t believe I have anywhere judged what Meghan wore, other than to state my opinion her coat was tight and the fabric was pulling. I simply said, based on what the ensemble would have cost, it was not unreasonable for people to think it ostentatious. If you’d like to show me where I said it was ostentatious, please feel free. …

sunglassesonthetable · 10/06/2022 13:39

Do you think it's an issue?

Roussette · 10/06/2022 13:42

Oh good. You don't think it was ostentatious.
Neither do I

The RF wore all sorts, and she fitted in with them very well in her outfit

I've just had a peek at a fashion link, coat dresses galore!

Serenster · 10/06/2022 13:44

Me personally no. I love seeing women wear couture clothes - Sheikha Mozah and Queen Rania of Jordan in particular often look absolutely amazing.

I am very well aware however that public displays of wealth like this go down very badly with very many people, and that turning up in an outfit that costs more than double what many people earn in a year can be seen as tone deaf and ostentatious. Hence why I said that the staggering cost of Meghan’s outfit means people can justifiably have opinions about it (that will go beyond just what it looks like).

Roussette · 10/06/2022 13:49

I thought we'd established we don't know what she paid for it? And it's not taxpayer funded after all

queenofarles · 10/06/2022 13:50

Wow Did you have the Dior wedding dress in the end? Not Dior, Lacroix .
, I never liked Dior’s Galliano era. Melania Trump had her wedding dress made at Dior it was so OTT and very theatrical , cost was rumoured to be over €300k! ,
My Dsis had her dress made at lacroix too and it was exquisite.

yes Diana wore lots of Dior , Versace , Valentino . All RF members wore expensive made to measure clothes, being thrifty and buying high street is quite a very recent thing. started by Doc I think.

sunglassesonthetable · 10/06/2022 13:51

Personally I think it would more 'diplomatic' if she wore British. Like Kate wearing Chanel in France.

But as she's a grown up women who had her own career and own millions, with a great relationship with Dior, I'm also thinking why should she try and people please on the off chance it will annoy someone.

Especially as the question of cost is not really limited to just what she's wearing but the whole jubilee anyway.

Twas ever thus with rich americans and the RF . They have often been seen as arriviste and gauche.

Roussette · 10/06/2022 13:53

Which reminds me....
The royal report is out in June which details the RFs expenditure on travel, clothing budgets and much much more

sunglassesonthetable · 10/06/2022 13:54

Not Dior, Lacroix .

How fabulous.

We expect it now.

Rania very rarely wear couture , I think she even stopped all together, , the most I’ve seen her in is Gabriella Hearst, which is quite understandable.
Jordan isn’t a wealthy country, the number of people below the poverty line is quite big, also there was something in the news a few years ago about the government raising or stopping subsided bread , the great influx of Syrian refugees, threat of a coup. it would have been tone deaf to show up in couture or even thousands worth of ready to wear clothes to things like refugees kitchen, women centers etc.

Serenster · 10/06/2022 14:42

I agree that Queen Rania seldom wears couture now, but that is a fairly recent development given the criticism she has received (a royal fashion blogger at one stage had to add a disclaimer to her site to make it clear that Queen Rania’s clothes were not paid for by Jordanian tax payers after being contacted about it). Here’s a very small selection of some of her past looks

I think Dior let Meghan down with the fitting as I said on the other style thread. A button seemed to be popping under the collar and she had to fiddle with it a number of times I thought the point of couture was fitting perfectly so no popping and fiddling required. I didn’t like the hat style with the coat. - the cost screamed Jackie O chic but the hat was more 70’s and I thought the shorter arms cut off Meghan’s arms at a point that made them look shorter. In the casual jumper birthday photo you can see she has lovely long limbs.

i read Dior did the Brooklyn Beckhams wedding suit - which didn’t look great - I guess I’ll be looking elsewhere for my new season couture 🤣

Ohnonevermind · 10/06/2022 15:28

my brother lives in Germany (knows some of the ‘royal’ family’s
He says that they spend a lot of a garment but they last. One of his friends ‘swears’ by handmade shoes 🤣 but they are repaired as required and last at least 10 years. You see Prince Charles is the same.

My problem is staying the same size for 10 years 🤣 Thanks

Yikes. I’m not an expert on the clothes but I can identify an LV bag there that cost >£35k

Thanks for that - interesting to see which pieces were timeless and others which were less so over the decades. Love the outfit she wore for the Norwegian visit - not sure about the Met Gala dress - looks like she had a run in with a dead pigeon (that might just be me as the thought of being covered in feathers makes my toes curl).

CathyorClaire · 10/06/2022 20:24

it’s much more likely to be a loan or rent than a buy

Maybe that's why it didn't according to this thread, can't say I was actually watching the never ending bollocks fit? Wink

Disclaimer - am total high street peasant and wouldn't recognise a spendy couture frock if it came up and slapped me three times round the chops then tripped me over Grin

Back to the original OP question, I think they walked alone because someone decided they will not get any more pictures than absolutely necessary formally mingling with the royals or looking like they belong. If you look carefully, nobody really cares to speak too much to them or be seen hanging out with them. Shame as there could have been more Netflix footage material. The royal cold shoulder if you will. Talk about living with the consequences of your decisions, can't have it all can you

All subjective and speculative. You can easily suggest similar and make up stories about any one else who walked in there. "I think William walked alone most of the time because they were fighting about his affair, there is clearly a Royal Rift and Kate is crying out for help with nobody to support her in the RF "

Coronateachingagain · 03/07/2022 22:42

Speculative yes, subjective not. Facts are facts - they were sidelined.

If I needed to spend so much of the year closeted with my extended family I'd crack up. Add in all sorts of protocol and unwritten rules and life must be exceptionally pampered but difficult for the royal family.
Meghan was much too mature and independent to cope with that and who can can blame her. I just wish they would find a route through this which doesn't involve monitising the relationships.
