How do you think this will go down? And will the British public ever accept Camilla as Queen Consort?

I think I am right to say that the Queen's words are 'sincere wish' and please correct me if I'm wrong. It will be interesting to see if any newspapers and tv stations misrepresent those two words. No, I don't think she said 'must' or 'should' or 'will be'.

upinaballoon · 06/02/2022 08:17

How will this go down, OP? There will be a division of feelings as usual. I daresay there will be an opinion poll in a day or two which might give an indication.

SnottyLottie · 06/02/2022 08:53

@SenecaFallsRedux I assumed that Philip of Spain was King consort because he was King of Spain in his own right? Same with William of Orange? His title was technically Prince of Orange because the country was a Principality. How harsh would it be to be the ruler of your own country, marry the Queen of another and then and then get your rank demoted in that country.

I wasn’t aware that Darnley was titled King Consort in Scotland. In hindsight that seems such a bad idea and would cause a lot of problems, which I guess to a degree it did.

(And I’m totally geeking out that someone is engaging me in a history discussion, I love history 🤓🥰😆)

I don't like the way this has been done; having the subject introduced by the Queen was quite a deliberate and cynical move imho in order to pre-empt debate or criticism.
Why does there need to be a debate? The wife of the King is the Queen Consort. We don't get to debate who should become King.

As for criticism, it's a free country with free speech, go right ahead.

ColettesEarrings · 06/02/2022 09:03

Some people really do need to get a life, the comments across the net are hysterical in every sense!

clarepetal · 06/02/2022 09:10

So Charles and Camilla have been married 16 years. The same amount of time he was married to Diana, but the difference is, at this point in his marriage to Diana they hated each other and couldn't be in the same room together. Charles and Camilla look happy and relaxed together and work as a team. She clearly makes him happy, he should have been allowed to marry her in the first place. Although what happened to Diana was appalling and shouldn't have happened, she isn't here now, and Charles is. He deserves to be happy, God knows he has a big enough weight on his shoulder being King of England, why not have the woman he loves by his side?

The sovereign is the 'fount of all honours'. You may think it's an archaic and outdated system, which it may very well be, but that is how the monarchy works.

The public don't get to 'debate' such matter, but are of course free to criticise it as much as they wish.

SnottyLottie · 06/02/2022 10:05

The public don’t get to debate the issue but they will talk about/complain/criticise. The media will pick up on this. We all know certain elements of the press love to stick the boot in and an unpopular monarch and consort could do a lot of damage to the reputation and even framework of the monarchy if not treated carefully.

Diana's marketing really has been quite stunning. Since she died (which was undeniably tragic) she has morphed from this complex, tricky woman who cut off her friends without warning, was fickle and difficult, who had more than one affair during her unhappy marriage into this absolute saintly human who never put a foot wrong.

Diana did some amazing things in terms of AIDS awareness and modernising the monarchy. But she was a very flawed teenager when she married and the marriage was a disaster from the start. Totally incompatible couple.

Maybe this is the Queen's way of acknowledging that they were wrong in blocking Charles from marrying Camilla in the first place.

IcedPurple · 06/02/2022 10:09

There was never any question of Charles marrying Camilla in the 1970s. They were both pretty young at the time, and she was crazy about Andrew Parker Bowles. He was considered quite the catch among other class ladies at the time, for reasons were are not immediately apparent!

I don't think Charles and Camilla got anywhere near considering marriage at that point in time.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/02/2022 11:18

At this point in his marriage to Diana they hated each other and couldn't be in the same room together

Considering the amount of time Camilla spends at Raymill rather than with her husband, it would appear that neither can she
Granted they put a good face on it for occasional appearances, but even a brief glance at the court circular shows the "hard work" for the lie it is, and after all Camilla wasn't called the laziest woman in England for nothing

Doubtless it's worth it for the baubles though ...

The recent YouGov polls were in favour. Seems like most people don't care. The hysteria following Diana has embed away for most people (well from those who initially cared anyway) and for most of the media I think.

It's not like the general public would get a say anyway.
And regardless what people called her, queen consort would have been her role anyway.

I suspect a lot of couples in their 70s would spend time doing their own thing if they had numerous luxury houses at their disposal. They're not kids in the first flush of love.

And I doubt Camilla is in it for the 'baubles'. Look at her in her pre-royal years. Very much a wellies and Burberry jacket upper class type. I suspect that if it was up to her, she'd still be living the life of a posh country lady. All that said, she has carried out her role very well and I see no reason why she should not have the title of queen.

MarshaBradyo · 06/02/2022 11:23

I think it’s a good way to legitimise the royal position further

I’m not that fussed either way though

Abraxan · 06/02/2022 11:25

@mummykel16

I'm just glad harry and andrew are well out of it
Because the comparison between the two men is so close?

Why on earth do people insist on trying to claim Harry has behaved worse than Andrew?

The two 'crimes' are nowhere near in a par with one another.

Lochroy · 06/02/2022 11:29

Great.

Lochroy · 06/02/2022 11:30

Hmm. That now looks sarcastic typed as a one wonder answer. I do think it's great!

feellikeanalien · 06/02/2022 15:29

What actual difference will it make to anyone's life what she is called?

I do hate the way people re-write history in their own minds. Charles was never forbidden to marry Camilla - the Crown is not true! Camilla was madly in love with Andrew Parker Bowles, and used a 'relationship' with Charles to make him jealous. It worked, and they married!

Have to say that I have gone from disliking her to admiring the way that she has brought forward her role and reputation over the past 20 years. She seems a brilliant support to Charles who clearly needs her at his side.

Aquafizzle · 07/02/2022 08:24

I'm not sure what the alternative would.be... those who are not pleased about it - would you rather Camilla just sat back and did no royal duties and left Charles to it while she tended to her horses and did the gardening?

I certainly hope not to be working at that age but she is and seemingly doing a good job. Surely we would prefer she continue that?

ajandjjmum, the Crown is not true. Thank you for saying that. I saw some of the first series, but no more, except that Youtube sometimes offers me a tiny piece and I think I saw Charles and Diana practising their wedding vows. I wish people wouldn't take it as the perfect truth. It's a soap.

... but it's all gone a bit Brexit on the "should the monarchy end with the queen" thread. Exactly 50-50 when I voted this morning.

Here we go........

No mention of skipping anyone - not possible. Talking about Charles and Camilla. Try to leave out your negativity towards William and Kate if you possibly can, as it really doesn't add to the discussion.
