@Aspiringmatriarch

I think there is a large amount of other work that goes with being royal which isn’t fun or glamorous which possibly wasn’t realised or known about earlier.

Do you think being an actor is constant glamour and fun? Whatever criticisms you may have, there is no indication that Meghan wasn't willing to work.

I don't think she got married intending to leave the institution. I think that she thought she knew what the institution was and she didn't realise how rigid it would be. Everyone thinks they can change things and maybe she thought the same. It's not that she wasn't willing to work, it's just that she wanted to work her own way. I wouldn't criticise her for that but it just couldn't be countenanced within the RF. She just wasn't cut out for Royal life. You must need the hide of a rhinoceros or feel very secure to put up with all the criticism. Neither she nor Harry have thick skin so it must have been unbearable. I wonder how they would have coped if naked pictures of her had been plastered all over the Internet? They'd have exploded. I think the RF is less without her but it's best she's gone.

Always impressed with the encyclopaedic knowledge and memories of some posters here! @Rinoachicken I've never seen that picture before and it is definitely the most horrible thing I have ever seen The Queen wear! Truly hideous. ShockConfused

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 14/11/2021 14:35

I don't even think it's accurate about MN, frankly, and since you made it as a general statement, don't be surprised when people pick up on that.

StormzyinaTCup · 14/11/2021 14:37

Gosh Rhinoachicken not seen that pic before, that’s quite some outfit - Angela must of been on holiday leave at the time!Wink

TheRustler · 14/11/2021 14:38

It's a 'read the room' thing. Turn up at a veterans' event in elegant but understated dress = look at my husband, the veteran. Turn up in a gigantic Inauguration Ball frock = look at ME and be reminded of Princess Diana's black 'revenge dress'.

Viviennemary · 14/11/2021 14:43

Apparently they were not very well received at this event.

madisonbridges · 14/11/2021 14:43

@Aspiringmatriarch
I thought she looked beautiful and very happy and I don't really care what she wears as long as it isn't horrifically inappropriate - which it wasn't

It was a fund-raising gala not a remembrance ceremony so I agree it wasn't inappropriate at all. I loved the design, she is very pretty and has a lovely figure but it didn't fit which was a shame. But I do have to disagree that she looked happy. She looked very nervous and I noticed that when she kept trying to grab at his hand and steer him, which she does a lot, this time he kept dodging or ignoring her and actually removed her hand quite obviously from his
I didn't detect bad feeling between them just that he wasn't as compliant to her touch as he usually is.

rubicscubicle · 14/11/2021 14:44

What Meghan was wearing was a standard gala dress, nothing unique about it. The examples of other royals is when it's unusual, like KM up skirts or the pic you just showed of HMQ or the unusual hats the sisters wore (they were not singled out even then, because Tara something also got it for her pointy hat, several hats were criticised.).

Yes, I am talking about MN. Yes, ofcourse KM may be criticised in some corners, those corners are not MN, most likely hate sites (it seems MN has taken that mantle in regards to Meghan). Also the media went on and on about how stunning KM looks at the bond premier - never said anything negative about it. And no I never saw any thread on here criticising that dress, most certainly it was never criticised on two threads.

Ooo. How do you know that? Give us the goss.
SallyLockheart · 14/11/2021 14:45

TheRustler. I agree - its about reading the room AND taking advice about what to wear. Kate has been criticised on MN for dressing like a much older person (that's phrasing it pleasantly compared to some posters) - I would say perhaps the advice she has been given and listened to has been conservative (little c) and perhaps a little too conservative in the early years. She appears to come into her own in recent years, and that probably reflects more confidence in herself and more confidence in her stylists and designers. Likewise Camilla - she dresses well for her age and body shape and to complement the occasion and the company she is with.

LondonWolf · 14/11/2021 14:50

This is provably untrue 🙄

There is no “hate” in this discussion and MN is not a “hate” site.

Serenster · 14/11/2021 14:58

There may have been individual posts criticising Meghan’s dress on two threads (was it even discussed on the first one? I actually don’t recall), but certainly not two threads on it.

Out of interest, here are posts from two different Style & Beauty threads about Royal fashion generally and Kate’s dress at the James Bond premiere specifically. Here’s also a recent post about Meghan’s red dress. There has also been some recent discussion in the thread about poster’s favourites of Meghan’s outfits from her royal days. Such a tired allegation to say MN is a Meghan hate site.

Thanks, Rhinoachicken, it's a while since I'd seen that monstrosity the Queen wore. I rarely comment on the royal ladies' fashions, but that was hideous

BTW I'm pretty sure Angela Kelly started designing for her much later, and think she makes a brilliant job of it ... even though the big name designers must be spitting

Rinoachicken · 14/11/2021 15:03

@ShamedBySiri and @StormzyinaTCup Grin

All I know for sure is she wore it to the Royal Variety in 1999 - and for some reason I have it in my head that the design was as the result of a competition to design a dress for the queen? But that bit might just be in my head!

I DO remember at the time wondering what Prince Phillip must had said when he saw it!

upinaballoon · 14/11/2021 15:07

@Rinoachicken

Does anyone remember on one single occasion the queen wore a dress by a new designer that was pretty universally felt to be a shocker? It had a black bodice and a rainbow skirt?? She never wore anything like it ever again!
I do vaguely remember. Mostly I like what she wears but I wasn't keen on the VERY bright green get-up. There might even have been two bright green outfits.
rubicscubicle · 14/11/2021 15:09

@Viviennemary

Not from any coverage or footages that I have seen. Infact, it seems the opposite to what you claim.
Rinoachicken · 14/11/2021 15:11

@rubicscubicle How bizarre to limit your information about anything to only one website?!

But since you seem content to only live in a MN world, I certainly remember many countless threads widely condemning KM for all her early wardrobe malfunctions, accusing her of deliberately not weighting her hems so the wind would blow up her skirt and show off her pants for the waiting paps etc. I’ll dig them out if you especially wish to see them.

She was also widely criticised elsewhere for it, but apparently other news and information sources other than MN don’t count!

Oh and I’ve never been on the S&B boards - these threads were in AIBU for the main.

madisonbridges · 14/11/2021 15:11

😂😂😂 @Rinoachicken. Its like some horrific harlequin costume. I wonder if she wore it for a bet!

ShamedBySiri · 14/11/2021 15:11

the design was as the result of a competition to design a dress for the queen

Whether it was that dress or another on a different occasion but it's pretty brave to agree to wear whatever is submitted via a competition!
Surely the Boaty McBoatface of dresses.
The public has a habit of delivering on these occasions, just not what most sane people would want to be delivered! Grin

Rinoachicken · 14/11/2021 15:13

@madisonbridges when I was searching for the image just now it also bought up the headlines it created - some were less than polite ‘has HMQ abdicated her sense of style?!’

madisonbridges · 14/11/2021 15:14

If people want to read criticism of Kate's dress sense, just go to the S&B board. Lots of criticism over flounces, florals, length, colours. Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

MummyJ12 · 14/11/2021 15:17

You’re absolutely right @Serenster I remember commenting on the Kate’s Bond premiere dress. Although I can’t remember what section of MN it was on, I do remember quite a few negative and mean comments (too old fashioned, dated, too showy etc…) it’s wrong to say just MM gets negative views on here for outfit choices.
I also remember a really not nice thread (OP why2why) set up after Kate visited the Sarah Everard vigil and there was a lot of hate about her on that thread. It was just awful to read. So it absolutely isn’t just MM that receives criticism on MN for sure.

madisonbridges · 14/11/2021 15:19
@madisonbridges when I was searching for the image just now it also bought up the headlines it created - some were less than polite ‘has HMQ abdicated her sense of style?!’
Hahaha. I wonder if when she put it on, she thought, "oh this looks nice." Or whether she thought, "crikey. Oh well, it'll have to do." Poor Prince Philip.

I love the Queen but a fashion faux pas can't be denied. However, I've got a yukky day coming up tomorrow so I shall keep the image in my head to give me a smile throughout the day. Thank you. 🥰

Definitely do an AS on Kate and Erdem if you want criticism of her clothing - particularly the mustard Erdem
Serenster · 14/11/2021 15:24

Or the ice-blue McQueen ruched ballgown she wore to the Dutch State Visit banquet - people loathed that! Grin
