For those that are interested - I know I am.

Does anyone know when the appeal judgement will be made.

The question has to be asked why a USA veteran event wanted an ex-UK royal and his non-military wife to present five awards at their ceremony? Are they short of war heroes themselves to present medals?

Was it the case that Sussex PR suggested that they do the ceremony? We will never know. Certainly the event got more publicity than it would have got than without them - but the focus then became that dress and the fact that there was an entourage of cameramen etc in attendance rather than the bravery of the recipients of the awards.

Are they just rent a pseudo royal by default?

All the royals have this issue too - how to make their roles relevant to who they are and what they are doing - and they have very experienced PR behind them to have a long view plan.

Meghan and Harry probably do have a plan but it is seems very scattergun at the moment and jumps around from cause to cause .

This is what I don't understand. If I were attending that event, I would be pretty pissed off that all the attention was on Harry and Meghan and their entourage.

@Puzzledandpissedoff

I am surprised that they allowed a Netflix camera crew and sound guy to film because it shifts focus from the veterans to H&M

That Netflix were there is something else I wasn't aware of - presumably it'll be material for a future piece? - but focusing the attention on themselves seems a major priority these days

I don't think they've released anything about a personal wreath being laid in LA this time though, which surprised me since those who mark the event this way often continue the tradition each year

The Netflix crew filmed their NY trip too. There were pics of Harry with a mic in his pocket and lots of speculation that M's baggy coats were to hide hers. I think people are assuming a documentary of their works this year

do we have any USA based posters on here? Our perspective is UK based and so I have no idea at all how this all played out in the USA.

Roussette · 16/11/2021 11:56

I just thought maybe it would on occasion be wise to reflect on whether their appearance at certain events is inappropriate as it will inevitably take the spotlight away from the event in hand

So, they should never go out then or Harry as a veteran of 10 years himself and asked to a Veteran event should not go even though he was asked to present medals to other Veterans and they talked warmly about Invictus which he was instrumental in setting up.
I have no idea what is 'inappropriate'... I would find him turning down this special invitation inappropriate.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/11/2021 11:59

Yes, I remember reading that Netflix were at the NY thing, Banana, but just hadn't realised they were here too - which as you suggest makes it even more likely it's for a future documentary

I wasn't over bothered about the dress one way or the other, but now I'm wondering if something more understated might have been chosen if the film-makers hadn't been there

Roussette · 16/11/2021 11:59

And if it was found out that he did turn it down, the criticism on here would be huge. How dare he, he only wants the Hollywood celeb lifestyle, he's left all his Army connections behind, he doesn't care about the Veterans, even though he is one, I can just imagine it.

I’m U.K. based too and thought the same. I found this article interesting.

The Americans see them more of celebrities rather than Royals I gather but the press over there is much less brutal and more sympathetic. However, I have also read that their popularity has taken a bit of a hit over there now.

BananaPB · 16/11/2021 12:06

There were no fans waiting for them in NY so I think they are probably indifferent. There are royals from other countries living in the US.

I doubt anybody would have batted an eyelid. Harry has never served in the USA armed services and would not have been an immediate go-to to present an award to USA veterans.

We would have never heard anything about it - no criticism raised at all.

smilesy · 16/11/2021 12:09

Well no, not necessarily. If he turned it down because it was deemed inappropriate because he is not connected to the US veterans, that would be fair enough. I’m sure the RF and others regularly turn things down that they are invited to attend because despite the organisers wanting a certain person, that person may be aware that their profile doesn’t quite fit. As other posters have said, the unfortunate effect has been that the actual purpose of the gala has been rather overshadowed.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/11/2021 12:11

The NYT is behind a paywall, Mummy, which is a shame as it's fairly authoritative and I'd like to have seen it

FWIW an American pal's military group are spitting online about "attention seeking", "foreign princelings" and their @?!& wife - best leave out the actual descriptions on that one Hmm - but of course it's just one group and they don't speak for all of America any more than I do

BananaPB · 16/11/2021 12:11

There's the odd savage one like this but they have generally bought lots of puff pieces everywhere. Even with the court case stuff this week the US press did not start reporting it as soon as UK press

Aspiringmatriarch · 16/11/2021 12:12

Is there any evidence that Harry requested the national anthem?

Also wondering how much coverage the gala would normally get in the press.

BananaPB · 16/11/2021 12:16

And if it was found out that he did turn it down, the criticism on here would be huge.

If he'd attended in a low key way without his Netflix camera crew because he wanted to network with other veterans then people wouldn't be pissed off. I can see why veterans would wonder why Harry was selected over a famous American veteran. The marketing and focus was all on the Sussexes. Have you seen any coverage of the winners and their stories?

I wonder if he was specifically asked or they asked if they could attend . I suspect the latter.

Ok, I’ve screenshot the article (lots of advertising so excuse that!)
There’s 16 screenshots but worth a read I think. I’ll post 3 at a time….
Please bear with me on this (huge apologies!)
