Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

 • THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUFFOLK

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

What started [as a] fairytale romance became a story that reinvented the genre – a self-made, independent woman playing an equal role alongside her knight.

😅🤷‍♀️

Marmaladeagain · 19/08/2021 11:56

"What started [as a] fairytale romance became a story that reinvented the genre – a self-made, independent woman playing an equal role alongside her knight."

These people want to be taken seriously?! Shock

The Obamas are wise indeed to keep away from their orbit - H&M are determind to inhabit the asteroid belt all by themselves. Keep moving, hoping no-one notices the last "inititiave" or "statement" that bombed. Issue another piece of "news" ASAP via Scobie to detract how poorly received the joint statement on being "scared" was received.

As someone above said - why on earth do they think their opinion matters? Stick a few lines on Twitter maybe, but grand fairytale announcements on their website signed by the Duke and Duchess (even the layout -as if it is poetry - all centred on the page (just missing some stardust) Grin.

It's truly hilarious. That statement was an (another) appalingly written piece of self-indulgent twaddle.

Adults do not use words like "scared" and "being conditioned" etc - if my child produced that I'd gently explain it sounds childish and maybe they might need to start the whole piece again.

SueSaid · 19/08/2021 12:11

We just need to laugh back now tbh, their delusions are quite amusing. If only they would stop attacking his family though. I could cope with them just being figures of ridicule yet they keep sticking the knife in?!

Why doesn't #LoveAlwaysWins work for them I wonder, can't be anything to do with bitterness and resentment surely. Very sad.

Because it’s the only way they can fund this lifestyle and give them the high profile internationally that they both appear to want.

Without all the salaciousness and a cheap peer through the windows of the British RF what else do they have? She’s an ex actress (and not one of the big hitters) and he’s an ex member of the RF. End of. They have to have something to sell that will keep them in the limelight for as long as possible.

Gilmorehill · 19/08/2021 12:27
@Cacacoisfarraige completely agree. On social media they could have made responses in a much more natural and understated way (as most celebs, public figures do). The issuing of public statements adds a gravitas that they just don't have and I feel embarrassed for them.

I mean can you imagine Princess Beatrice, for example, issuing a public statement on any of these matters? Or Zara Tindall? They would face the same ridicule if they did this.

It is like - what authority do you have on these issues save for your accident of birth and marriage?
Exactly! That’s what’s so irritating about it.

Marmaladeagain · 19/08/2021 12:30

"why do they keep sticking the knife in"?

General consensus would be: they are just revealing who they are.

I've long found them highly amusing and said that they remind me of the Malvolio character - someone told them they were "great" (ie. could make some money out of them) and H&M fellt for it hook, line and sinker.

They play the aggrieved Malvolio fool so well, perplexed everyone else can't see how "great" they are. Vanity is a prerequisite to inhabit the role as well as they do.

SugarCaneHarvest · 19/08/2021 12:35

Alice Evans posted something interesting on twitter - which she has since deleted about the statement this pair released.

She said that she shared some of the same agents and managers as MM in LA when MM was in Suits. She said there were numerous stories that MM wanted protection and security detail back then - before she even met Prince Harry (because of her 'fame').

Lockupyourbiscuits · 19/08/2021 12:40

Maybe the accusations have flared because they were denied the Windsor christening
It looks like backlash to some recent slight
If they really cared about what was happening in the world they wouldn’t be so self absorbed

SueSaid · 19/08/2021 12:42

'They play the aggrieved Malvolio fool so well, perplexed everyone else can't see how "great" they are. Vanity is a prerequisite to inhabit the role as well as they do.'

Indeed. They are fascinating I'll give them that. You wonder if they believe it all, do they howl with laughter at their latest 'He is my Knight! I am an independent woman ' twaddle, do they sit counting all their $$ going hang on 'I feel a meme coming on about compassion, mh and plebs go us!!'

If they are taking the piss well fair enough, that is who they are. Obviously $$$ means far more than family and authentic light shining ever will.

OverByYer · 19/08/2021 13:17

They are fascinating to watch.
Their vanity and desire to stay in the public eye is great tabloid fodder.
They are beyond parody.

StormzyinaTCup · 19/08/2021 13:45

'What started [as a] fairytale romance became a story that reinvented the genre – a self-made, independent woman playing an equal role alongside her knight.'

I have bypassed the 🤮 and gone straight to rofl🤪
OS/the couple have to stop this if they want to be taken seriously, OS is doing them no favours if the above paragraph is anything to go by except to make them all a laughing stock.

They are in their own little bubble surrounded by 'yes' people and truly believe in their own sense of importance and grandiosity. In the real world lots of people are giving it a large helping of WTAF.

Agree with previous posters, they are interesting to watch and provide quite a good lesson in how not to do things.

MaMelon · 19/08/2021 13:52

I would love to see the WhatsApp messages and memes that inevitably must fly between members of the RF when H&M come out with their latest gift to the world Grin

An excerpt from the updated FF ….

'What started [as a] fairytale romance became a story that reinvented the genre – a self-made, independent woman playing an equal role alongside her knight.'

Ah hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

That’s fucking terrible. That’s properly made me laugh, that has.

They are just so embarrassing, both of them.

Eaumyword · 19/08/2021 14:36

To be fair, that's OS's flowery, sycophantic language!
M is a self made, independent woman, I wouldn't question that and I think she's the brains behind their setup - I am just surprised she's permitted the reference to her being 'alongside her knight' Shock

Oldbutstillgotit · 19/08/2021 14:44

Almost as flowery as yesterday’s statement.

SugarCaneHarvest · 19/08/2021 14:47

I can just here 'What started as a fairytale romance...' in the voice of the guy they get to do the trailers to massive box office Hollywood films..

It is hilarious and you know I would really miss the Sussexes if they did decide to drop out of public life. Love them or hate them, they are endlessly fascinating and watchable.

This!
Marmaladeagain · 19/08/2021 15:05

Some people slow down to stare at a crash on the motorway. So I guess that’s the audience they’ll gain, but can’t say I’ll miss them when they move to purely celebrity gossip territory.

Admittedly the slow journey and dawning realisation on their part that they are objects of ridicule is amusing. Similar to that Shakespearean fool - we can all see the trajectory whilst the character carries on oblivious.

They only inhabit news at the moment due to the hypocrisy and self delusion of hanging on to the RF connection.

As time goes by and there will be no more BP balcony opportunities or photos with the RF to trade off, their stories will fade to gossip columns.

The funny thing with the news today from OS about being unhappy RF haven’t acknowledged their complaints is exactly same thing Thomas Markle says. Do they have no self-awareness?

I absolutely agree that she’s independent. I’m not sure I can agree that anyone who has received a private education and had parental links in the industry is self made but I think that’s debatable.

Yes like the trailer for one of their publicity stunts I forget which 'he gave up everything for her.. '

'What started [as a] fairytale romance became a story that reinvented the genre – a self-made, independent woman playing an equal role alongside her knight.'

More accurately 'what started [as a] festering chip on his shoulder because he wasnt as important as his db and never would be developed into a fully fledged mahoosive persecution complex. They could host frequent pity parties, play victims whilst at the same time attack people, make loadsa money by breaching everyone else's privacy and gaslight the whole of the UK hurrah calling them racist for calling out their appalling behaviour. Hurrah!'.

Lovely.

Oldbutstillgotit · 19/08/2021 15:13

And now their lawyers are involved 🤦‍♀️

SugarCaneHarvest · 19/08/2021 15:14

That is what I don't understand about them. They had such a huge platform in the RF. Whilst granted they were not the top dogs - they did have some glitz and glamour and I think if they had worked their celebrity connections within their roles as working Royals they could have been huge. As the celebs would have been clamouring to get involved with their pet projects.

They would have been guests of honour at the Met galas, premiers, Whitehouse dinners, holidays on yachts and in Mustique. They gave all that up for what? It can't just be money as they would never have really wanted for anything as Royals.

I do wonder if they genuinely thought they were bigger than the brand.

Their lawyers must be rubbing their hands with glee every time they get in touch

Why have they got their lawyers in this time?
hangonamo · 19/08/2021 15:30

I think this is right. I remember early on (pre flounce but post wedding), they said they had single handedly modernised the monarchy and that the RF didn't understand how to harness their value or something. I thought, ooh these two really are quite deluded, and it's not going to end well 👀
