Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

Please stop this. I called it insults. Not abuse. I've looked. The first time the word 'abuse' is mentioned is by YOU on that thread.

Please stop searching my posts from weeks ago and putting your interpretations on it weeks later to have a go.

It's not fair on me and certainly not fair on other posters who understandably don't want this crap.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 19/08/2021 08:58

So I’m not allowed to defend myself nor prove my assertions? And I’m being unfair?
Fair enough

Oldbutstillgotit · 19/08/2021 09:05

Can we keep to the topic please ? Love and peace and all that . ( 60s child)

SueSaid · 19/08/2021 09:06

'maybe ask for a separate topic, where only people who dislike H&M can post'

It really isn't about 'like' or dislike. It is debating the stuff they put out publicly. We are allowed to have opinions! stop trying to silence people. I have a voice and I'm empowered to use it Wink

Anyway. We have their new updated trashy tell tale tit book release to look forward to. The Queen didn't 'own it' apparently regarding their unsubstantiated allegations. Class, compassion and dignity Harry, look it up fgs!

Roussette · 19/08/2021 09:09

Oldbutstillgotit

I'm giving you the peace sign here!

Yes please, let's move on. I know what I said and what I didn't say, that's enough for me.
Back to the subject...

SpindleWhorl · 19/08/2021 09:10

@ARudeTerriblePerson

Harry has probably been asked to speak out by Invictus veterans.
Not like that he wasn't

In the book that only some months ago Omid denied was happening, people talk about them because they put themselves out there to talk about.
SueSaid · 19/08/2021 09:15

'Harry has probably been asked to speak out by Invictus veterans.'

And he did. A separate perfectly acceptable statement. Then we had the wordy LA feelz version. It's that that has made folk a bit Hmm

SueSaid · 19/08/2021 09:17

'In the book that only some months ago Omid denied was happening, people talk about them because they put themselves out there to talk about.'

It's an epilogue silly! Just a few authenticalky shoe horned in ner ner ner comments. They have more front than Blackpool.

ancientgran · 19/08/2021 09:22

@CorrBlimeyGG

Prince Harry served in Afghanistan. He also leads the Invictus Games and supports many veteran support projects. I guess that's why he felt the need to make a statement.
I expected him to say something because as you say he served there, he knows people who were hurt/died. The statement just doesn't seem to reflect that though, maybe a joint statement about things in general would have been more appropriate with Harry making his own statement about the Afghan situation, we don't get MPs who have served in the forces making statements about how "we" feel. They talk about how they feel and it seems more appropriate or genuine.
Oldbutstillgotit · 19/08/2021 09:23

I always though an epilogue was a short statement finalising a story/ play I.e . The End.
I am now reading that there are to be new chapters which suggests much more information is to be added .

Oldbutstillgotit · 19/08/2021 09:32

Off topic but does anyone else remember The Epilogue on TV ?

SpindleWhorl · 19/08/2021 09:35

@ancientgran, it's this one:

“What’s happening in Afghanistan resonates across the international Invictus community. Many of the participating nations and competitors in the Invictus Games family are bound by a shared experience of serving in Afghanistan over the past two decades, and for several years, we have competed alongside Invictus Games Team Afghanistan.“We encourage everybody across the Invictus network – and the wider military community – to reach out to each other and offer support for one another.”

I think Meghan is just being a typical ambitious actress trying to raise her profile, just like every other actress. There was a model ( I think) who dressed up in a berka this week trying to the same. Obviously most people in the public eye know not to push it this far.

Harry could have swayed public opinion on him by sticking by the first statement he gave or even a personal statement, with him being in that war zone himself. It was preachy, cotton wool statement that they gave and I'm really disappointed in him. As a serving Officer I really don't think he would have naturally wrote something like that and its time he grew a back bone or stepped out from hiding behind his wife.

Thanks for that, I was dealing with demanding GC and had just come back to look for it.

That sounds much more appropriate to me, maybe I'm old fashioned.

I was just talking to my SIL about that last week. Do you remember Evadne Price and her astrololgy bit as well.

you talk about not silencing people......yet we have seen just on this thread someone being attacked just for having a differing opinion. it is only a debate if both sides can speak. a lot of people like me are somewhere in the middle. annoyed by them, but not feeling they deserve the ((insert word)) they get.
catinboots21 · 19/08/2021 09:59

Making an observation that someone posts a lot on a particular subject doesn't constitute 'attacking' IMO Confused

SpindleWhorl · 19/08/2021 10:04

H&M always evoke split opinions on here.

In terms of the actual statement, nice sentiment but I think it's a terrible piece of writing, unfortunately.

In terms of them as people, well that's a different conversation.

I agree. The prolific posters are pretty obvious.

And I don't see why it would count as bullying, unless you think there is something wrong with being very interested in a subject and posting frequently

SugarCaneHarvest · 19/08/2021 10:07

@Cacacoisfarraige completely agree. On social media they could have made responses in a much more natural and understated way (as most celebs, public figures do). The issuing of public statements adds a gravitas that they just don't have and I feel embarrassed for them.

I mean can you imagine Princess Beatrice, for example, issuing a public statement on any of these matters? Or Zara Tindall? They would face the same ridicule if they did this.

It is like - what authority do you have on these issues save for your accident of birth and marriage?
