Blurb from publisher.

In an intimate and heartfelt memoir from one of the most fascinating and influential global figures of our time, Prince Harry will share, for the very first time, the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him.

Covering his lifetime in the public eye from childhood to the present day, including his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan, and the joy he has found in being a husband and father, Prince Harry will offer an honest and captivating personal portrait, on that shows readers that behind everything they think they know lies an inspiring, courageous and uplifting human story.'

@Comeinoutoftherain

I know it's the DM reporting it, but apparently he may have been paid an advance of "at least $20 million".

Michelle and Barack Obama got a $65 million advance for theirs (jointly).

If that's true, there's your answer right there. $20 million is A LOT of money.

If he's getting that sort of money, he'll be expected to come up with the goods. By which I mean, juicy inside royal gossip. Forget all the fluff talk about 'the man I have become'. Nobody cares about that. They want royal intrigue. That's what Random House are paying for, not to hear Harry talk about how much he's done for charidee.

I also think they published Meghan's silly 'children's' book as a sort of loss leader for this deal.

SueSaid · 19/07/2021 21:13

'Yes, there is an audience in America for this book. I have a feeling the image of the UK abroad is about to take a hit.'

Do the Americans lap all this bollocks up then? I though they were more intelligent tbh.

Billlius · 19/07/2021 21:13

Anyway, Chris Ship makes a Freudian slip and calls him Princess Harry.

Well, I thought it was funny.

Serenster · 19/07/2021 21:14

@CauliflowerCheese30

It's just inviting people to carry on talking about them isn't it, I too shall be really keen to see which charity the proceeds will go to.
Also, the devil is in the detail when it comes to things like this. Will the “proceeds” of the book relate just to physical sales? Will it include also sums paid by newspapers to serialise it in advance of publication (this will definitely be an income stream for them). Will it be calculated net of costs and overheads? How will they deal with the fact that the book will be published in many different countries and markets etc etc? They could define it so that they donate a lot, or a very little - I suspect we will never know.
sadperson16 · 19/07/2021 21:14

Who does he influence? It's rather sad when you think what he could have done.

StormzyinaTCup · 19/07/2021 21:15

The press will ruthlessly hunt down the juiciest snippets and the rest can wait for the 50p shelf at the charity shop.

From a mental health perspective I hope PH is a) factually correct in what he writes or b) mentally strong enough to take the media scrutiny and archive trawling that will follow if he isn't.

SueSaid · 19/07/2021 21:16

'If he's getting that sort of money'

Oh it's all for an authentic charidee silly. Nothing to do with getting his own back oh nooooo..

thecognoscenti · 19/07/2021 21:16

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Fuck, I’ll write my memoirs for $20 million

That's the thing, isn't it: no one would publish your memoirs, or mine, and they certainly wouldn't be coughing up $20 million for the privilege. No one would be the slightest bit interested in an ex-squaddie's musings if he wasn't born into the family he apparently now detests. No one would give the time of day to him or the middling former soap actress were it not for the royal connections. I agree with a PP that for that price, he's going to be expected to dish some dirt. Tacky.
Vicliz24 · 19/07/2021 21:16

@ShamedBySiri

When one thinks how poor Crawfie was frozen out for her anodyne memoir about the two little princesses. Different times I know but somehow I doubt The Queen has changed her views on loyalty much.
Absolutely this

I agree. Lots of people tragically lose a parent at a young age. Lots of people join the military serve in combat. Lots of people quit jobs they don't like. Harry telling everyone that he was sad when his mother died, scared when people were shooting at him in Afghanistan, and that he didn't like the drudgery of visiting an endless stream of charities and government facilities isn't $20 million worth of interesting.

MadameTuffington · 19/07/2021 21:18

ofgs - another spectacularly misjudged load of navel gazing, self absorbed shite from the ginger one - just fuck off please 🙌

Twiggyandcrisp · 19/07/2021 21:19

@NEVERENDINGST0RY

Hes his mothers son alright
I think that's a bit unfair. People forget that Diana was very, very discreet until it became apparent that she was expected to put up with her husband being unfaithful, quite openly within their circle (his friends used to make their homes available to Charles and Camilla, and staff have described Camilla driving through the gates of Highgrove ten minutes after Diana had departed for London) And at the same time she was expected to play the loving and concerned wife in public (she was forced to visit Charles in hospital after he had broken his elbow playing polo for example). William and Harry were very young at this point and no one says anything about the negative affects of having an unfaithful father on them. People forget that until Andrew Morton's book came out, there had been unconfirmed stories in the press, but no one knew for sure that any of them were true and in fact everyone was quite shocked that they were! In other words, many people feel that Diana was justified in speaking out and exposing the truth. It remains to be seen whether Harry is justified or not ... .
Smokeahontas · 19/07/2021 21:19

I just don’t get it. Of course, he’s entitled to write it, but it doesn’t tie in with wanting more privacy. I don’t see it being that salacious, just more of the same.

smilesy · 19/07/2021 21:22

@Smokeahontas. I agree. Finding Freedom was all hype and nothing of real substance and I would imagine this will be the same.

diddl · 19/07/2021 21:24

"If that's true, there's your answer right there. $20 million is A LOT of money"

Is it though for the lifestyle that they want to fund?

ohfook · 19/07/2021 21:24

@CrouchEndTiger12

Didn't the wives of some of his comrades say he did sweet fuck all in Afghanistan other than distasteful wear a cap saying "We do bad things to bad people"
I don't think this is true. I'm not a fan at all but I do know someone who served with him, albeit briefly, and only has positive things to say about him.
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/07/2021 21:25

‘D was justified in exposing the truth.’

That is as maybe.

Her offspring is managing the exposure part very well by the look of it.

The truth part? Maybe not so much.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 19/07/2021 21:26

I don’t mind Prince Harry, but he’s in his 30s and not particularly intelligent or insightful so have no desire to read a book of his!
I don’t expect to learn anything/find any wisdom. Can’t really see what the point of it is.

TolkiensFallow · 19/07/2021 21:26

He’s gone batshit cray cray

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 19/07/2021 21:27

That bit quoted in the Chris Ship tweet about 'sharing what I've learned in the course of my life' is just awful. I agree that he'll be expected to dish the dirt for that money, but that tells us that it's being positioned as another of their preachy outputs where they tell the public at large how to live and how they know so much more than everyone else. What a cracking read awaits.

I also feel sorry for the ghostwriter and editors, who will end up with the unenviable task of making Harry's narrative line up with all the other things he's now spoken about, which themselves aren't always consistent.

Title ideas, anyone? Just Call Me Harry? The Prince and the Pauper? (now he's played the 'they cut me off' card) How I Stopped Complaining and Learned to Love the Camera?

Serenster · 19/07/2021 21:27

@Vicliz24 @ShamedBySiri - It was only a few years ago when the Queen withdrew her Royal Warrant from Rigby & Peller when its founder published an autobiography that (briefly) mentioned her dealings with the Queen. So yes, I imagine she’d not be delighted by this news.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 19/07/2021 21:30

@diddl

I'm not sure it is. Their big house has a mortgage on it and will be expensive to run. They move in costly social circles. They can't now expect any more financial subsidy from his family after this. Don't know how long 20 million will last them.

It was a bit more than a brief mention and one that didn’t have to be made at all given that the warrant said all there was to say in the first place.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/07/2021 21:33

@Billlius

Chris Ship has it about right.
Shouldn’t that be, Learnt? Learned isn’t grammatically correct?
CliffsofMohair · 19/07/2021 21:34

@HavelockVetinari

Who's going to write it though? He's apparently not great academically, he'll either need a brilliant editor or (most likely) a ghost writer.
Maybe that kind art teacher who helped out with his A levels could be pressed into service
