The royal family

I’m in awe of the Queen

I’m no royalist, I dislike the fawning, particularly towards younger members of the family. Somehow I find myself watching Trooping the Colour and I can’t help but be impressed by the Queen.

She’s 95, very recently widowed following 70 odd years of marriage. She’s just got back from Cornwall and is again on active duty, enjoying this event. I know she’s lived an incredibly pampered life with the best health care, etc. I’m just amazed by her sense of duty and her strength.

I don’t think anyone has said she is perfect. She has just been admired as an elderly lady who has seen and lived through a great deal and, in public at least, conducts herself with good grace. I also don’t think posters have said that they believe in “divine right”. What they have said is that the Queen is deeply religious and believes that her being Queen is God’s purpose for her. The “Divine Right of Kings” is a very different matter. No one is creating an image of perfection 🤷‍♀️

SueSaid · 14/06/2021 11:29

'We have no idea how patient and tolerant she is. We are shown what the PR machine wants us to see'

Well we certainly have no idea if she is 'difficult and controlling' either which was what I was responding to. I do wish the Sussex squad would pick up on these unfair attacks and slurs like 'biddy'. I mean, we only have to say Haz isn't the sharpest tool in the box and it's handbags at dawn.

The Queen will brief the PR machine, do you think they say what they like? If she wasn't patient and tolerant she'd be in unedifying mudslinging match, much like Markle Senior and junior.

upinaballoon · 14/06/2021 11:29

When she had reigned longer than anyone else she made a little speech and she said something like, "I didn't look for this", not quite apologising for living so long, but nearly. It was a bit sad.

She can remember the furore of her uncle's abdication, so she has indeed lived through a lot and it keeps things in perspective.
Has anyone seen the BFG, when he goes to eat with her?

Also, wasn't the James Bond joke lovely, at the Olympic Games - I think it was the Games?

SueSaid · 14/06/2021 11:43

'Also, wasn't the James Bond joke lovely'

That was funny. She does seem to try to connect with people.

How funny that Biden said she reminded him of his dm, not sure of age difference but he doesn't look any younger and seems like he could be knocked over with a feather.

KarensGobbyChops · 14/06/2021 11:48

@Roussette

We have no idea how patient and tolerant she is. We are shown what the PR machine wants us to see.

This is a lady who has never given a controversial opinion, or an interview so we just don't know what she is like. We only know what we are allowed to see. She could be remarkably impatient for all we know! (not say she is)

From what we are shown, yes, she has an exceptional sense of duty but do we really know her character? I think we can guess, and yes it's all good but I cannot profess to know what she is like because what I see is what we are given to see.

This is not a criticism of her. As I've said before on here, she has a strong sense of duty and works hard, and I think she's a one off.

Totally bang-on as per Rousette.
Gorgeouslilgirl · 14/06/2021 11:48

“Unfair attacks”? 😃. There is no “attack”!

The only thing it “attacks” is some people’s servile platitudes.

I would love it if I was remembered as a curmudgeonly, maddening, stubborn woman. With amazing resilience (probably due to the above!). Who loved living and stayed young at heart till the end.

Roussette · 14/06/2021 11:50

I do wish the Sussex squad

Who are they on here?
I thought this was a thread about the Queen.

Why do you have to bring it back to 'Haz' (his name is Harry), 'Markle Senior' and 'Markle Junior', no idea who that is.

The Queen will brief the PR machine, do you think they say what they like?

Mostly, yes. There will be a 'Company' message no doubt.

Viviennemary · 14/06/2021 11:51

I thoughg it was a little bit cheeky of Biden saying she reminded him of his mother. He's no spring chicken himself and looks really frail. Surprised he's up to the job of being President.

esterwin · 14/06/2021 12:05

Biden is much younger than the Queen. The Queen is old enough to be his mother. He does not look at all frail, just slim unlike Boris Johnson and Trump who are both fat.

smilesy · 14/06/2021 12:09

@JaniieJones Biden is 17 years younger than the Queen. His own mother was 92 when she died in 2010, so perhaps he has that image of his mother fixed in his mind as the Queen reminds him of her like that 🤷‍♀️

Roussette · 14/06/2021 12:13

Biden being 'frail' has been levelled at him since he put himself forward for POTUS. He's doing fine alongside his VP Kamala Harris, and his administration backing him up. Anything's better than the previous shitshow that ended up in insurrection and a threat to democracy.

SueSaid · 14/06/2021 12:19

'He does not look at all frail, just slim unlike Boris Johnson and Trump who are both fat.'

Absolutely nothing to do with being fat or not, he looks hesitant and unsteady walking. I think we all saw him slip 3 times whilst boarding a plane. It is not a slur you know, I'm all for Biden but to say the Queen reminds him of his dm was rather odd.

Rainbunny · 14/06/2021 12:28

Biden is very fit for his age - far from frail.

He has a Peloton bike which he rides everymornign apparently. I'd be lying if I said I didn't spend time while sweating on my Peloton bike trying to guess his user name on the leaderboard!

SueSaid · 14/06/2021 12:32

'Why do you have to bring it back to 'Haz' (his name is Harry), 'Markle Senior' and 'Markle Junior', no idea who that is.'

Oh do lighten up! His name is actually Henry.

Well Markle senior is Thomas gossiping on one show, Markle junior would be his dd gossiping on another. Fortunately the Queen rises about it and displays great patience in tolerance.

'Biden is very fit for his age - far from frail'

He may be fit but he looks like a gust of wind would send him flying. Not sure why some are taking great offence at this fact.

Roussette · 14/06/2021 12:33

And there's lots of footage of him road cycling.

Roussette · 14/06/2021 12:38

Just don't get why they have to come up on this thread. It's just like any opportunity to knock Harry & Meghan with daft monikers and side swipes.

Apart from the Queen, perhaps this thread can rise above it too. Wink

SueSaid · 14/06/2021 12:45

'Just don't get why they have to come up on this thread. '

The op said she was in awe of the queen. We've then had her being criticised with 'side swipes' like 'biddy' and accusations of being controlling and difficult so I think it's far to say the thread evolved a tad.

Anywayyyy. Back to the being positive about the Queen! She is great, a beacon of duty and rising above it.

Roussette · 14/06/2021 12:48

No side swipes from me and nothing to do with M&H.

Gorgeouslilgirl · 14/06/2021 13:04

Biden looks very fit too me. As does the Queen. Great to see older people being super fit and full of life.

The only ones frail seem to be some egos on this thread who seem to take great pleasure in being perpetually offended 😃

Rainbunny · 14/06/2021 13:19

Biden really is extrordinarily fit for his age! I remember during the election campaign Trump was shit-talking Biden about his age (Yes Trump, the grossly obese, incoherent rambling, water dribbling, scared to walk down steps without holding someone's hand buffoon) and Biden jokingly responded that if Trump tried doing that in a debate he'd challenge him to a push-up contest. Biden would definitely be up for it which Trump knew and not surprisngly didn't dare go after Biden's age when they debated.

Shame really, I'd have loved to see Trump try to get down on the ground (and try to get up again) let alone do a push up!

smilesy · 14/06/2021 13:23

@Rainbunny Trump wouldn’t do that for fear of ruining his hairdo 😂

BreakingtheIce · 14/06/2021 14:05

@Gorgeouslilgirl

Why trash H&M in this thread *@BreakingtheIce*? Can’t help but hate, eh?
I'm not trashing them, I am stating fact, and no, it isn't 'hate'.
BalloonSlayer · 14/06/2021 19:04

There was a program recently about the crown jewels which was sort of an interview and the Queen was gratifyingly grumpy.

ApplyWithin · 14/06/2021 19:29

I think he had a bloody nerve saying HM reminded him of his mother! The man’s pushing 80 himself! Was it an attempt to make himself appear younger? I’ve nothing against him but I thought that was a very impolite comment.

smilesy · 14/06/2021 19:47

To be fair to Biden, I don’t think he meant to be a derogatory comment on any way. I think he meant that the Queen reminded him of his mother in spirit. His mother died in 2010 aged 92 and she seems to have been a great inspiration to him. She campaigned for him when he first became Vice President in 2008. I’m not sure we need to be offended in the Queen’s behalf in this case 🤣
