The royal family

I’m in awe of the Queen

I’m no royalist, I dislike the fawning, particularly towards younger members of the family. Somehow I find myself watching Trooping the Colour and I can’t help but be impressed by the Queen.

She’s 95, very recently widowed following 70 odd years of marriage. She’s just got back from Cornwall and is again on active duty, enjoying this event. I know she’s lived an incredibly pampered life with the best health care, etc. I’m just amazed by her sense of duty and her strength.

I love her and really dread the day she dies. I think it will be a hugely unsettling time in this country. It’s all any of us have ever known. I don’t think Charles has her grit, but William and Kate seem to be modeling themselves in her image. It’s quite awe-inspiring to see the pageantry and fanfare for this very small, very old lady who somehow means so much to so many.

Stability.

Have you seen the video of her cutting the cake at the Big Lunch yesterday? She used a ceremonial sword, even though she was offered a conventional knife, saying the sword was “more unusual” 🤣

I saw it and it made me smile. She certainly still has an amazing sense of humour and a quickness in her comments despite her advancing age. Grin
Aspiringmatriarch · 12/06/2021 14:30

I luffs her. Good old Queenie.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 12/06/2021 14:36

I tahini she’s fab and agree it will be very sad when she dies. She reminds me very much of my no nonsense Nan.

Can’t see any of the younger ones being anything like her

girlsallowed21 · 12/06/2021 14:39

@Bluntness100

It’s quite astonishing she’s 95. I mean, 95, no matter how good the health care, she’s doing astonishingly well, she really has dedicated her life to this, as she said she would, rightly or wrongly.
I don't get it. Granted she's doing well for a 95 year old but what has she dedicated her life to? Privilege? Numerous fancy lunches and tea parties? OK lmao 😂
Northernlurker · 12/06/2021 14:39

She probably feels a bit 'lighter' now the worst has happened and philip has died. Adjusting to loss is hard and painful but to see somebody you love decline towards death is in many ways worse. I think many people are surprised by the feelings of relief that also come with grief. I think the Queen is highly likely to have experienced that. And she is well supported. I saw the Duke of Kent was there today.

BillieSpain · 12/06/2021 14:46

@upinaballoon

Precisely. She has better "almost everything" than I do in life but I do not believe that she is "better" than I am or than you are, and I think she understands that. She is higher than I am in the organisation of society in this country and I am happy to accept that and I would curtsey to her any day of the week, out of respect for her role and for her own self. I was once told off by someone for using the words "ordinary people" but I'm going to use them. I think the Queen respects the ordinary people of this country. Does she still keep pigeons? I hope she does.
Lovely post.

Saying 'Are you supposed to be looking as if you’re enjoying yourself?' at the photo call for the G7 leaders was just the sort of thing Prince Philip would have done.

The Queen seemed to fit in with my theory that people often take on some of the qualities of those they have loved after they pass away.

(Hope that's not too 'woo' for the Royal Family board!)

BillieSpain · 12/06/2021 14:55

Yes,I get that @OutwiththeOutCrowd

Theunamedcat · 12/06/2021 14:58

I think she is doing incredibly well considering the stress she has been under and cutting the cake with the sword 🤣

I loved that!

I also loved Boris reply of yes they were, and they were actually enjoying themselves despite appearances 🤣🤣

I'd love a proper tell all from the Queen on her opinion of all the PMs she's reigned over.

She's certainly had an array or characters Grin

ThursdayWeld · 12/06/2021 15:04

She is wonderful.

SciFiScream · 12/06/2021 15:06

I've sworn my life to protect hers. I think she's ace.

But to a PP you know it's horrible to see her written about as the Queen of England. She is the Queen of so much more than just one country...

Dora26 · 12/06/2021 15:12

Great ad for homeopathy- go Queenie!

megletthesecond · 12/06/2021 15:20

Northern I wondered that too. The D of E was poorly on and off for so long it would always have been hanging over them. She's come through that and (hopefully) the worst of the pandemic and probably wants to get stuck in again.

cyclingmad · 12/06/2021 16:02

Not a role model for me. She is a privileged rich person who during the pandemic was wanting taxpayers money to cover her lost interest ..feck right off.

HeadNorth · 12/06/2021 16:05

I don't understand why she hasn't retired and handed the reins over to Charles years ago. Yes, she is great for age, but I am not sure I buy all the 'service' stuff. She doesn't have to do it, in fact it would be a kindness to her son to step back and let him take his turn. I wonder if she really dislikes Charles or thinks he is utterly useless that she feels she has to keep going. Otherwise it seems a bit selfish and arrogant, that she thinks no one else can possibly do the job.

smilesy · 12/06/2021 16:12

@cyclingmad, I think people are looking beyond her position as Queen and at the fact that she is a remarkable woman in her own right. 95 years old, she has reigned over 13 US presidents and 14 prime ministers and has seen many changes. She still does her job with good humour and does not complain. Many could learn a thing or two from her as a woman, even if you are not a lover of the monarchy, as pp have said.

amusedtodeath1 · 12/06/2021 16:12

She swore a solemn oath, to devote her life to her country. In her eyes abdication would be breaking that oath.

HeadNorth · 12/06/2021 16:19

To my mind that makes her seem a bit narrow and pedantic in her approach to life. It is entirely her choice to keep going at her age, she has options she has chosen not to exercise. You could interperit that as duty and self sacrifice, or maybe she can't bear to relinquish control.
amusedtodeath1 · 12/06/2021 16:27

Or she could just be an honourable person?

Roussette · 12/06/2021 16:33

This a million times over.
I've said it lots on Royal threads. It's perplexing to me. It could've been done and it should've been done.
I have nothing against her, she wore a nice outfit today for the Trooping of the Colour, but really.... she should've given her son a chance at it.

I don't think passing on the baton to your son is breaking an oath. Other european Royals have done it quite successfully and it has revitalised the royal houses. Now Charles is too old to revitalise anyting to be honest. She should've done it 20 years ago.

I think it means time has stood still, she is still our Monarch and nothing has changed for decades. Not necessarily a good thing.

Samcro · 12/06/2021 16:40

I admire the queen, but really don't get how she is a role model.
Lot to be admired, she is an amazing lady, but role model?

Roussette · 12/06/2021 16:42

I agree Samcro

There are brilliant role models out there but I wouldn't be picking the Queen.
That is not meant to insult her, but a role model is a personal choice isn't it....
