Harry and Megan have just announced their new baby's name.

What's everyone's thoughts?

Dora is such a beautiful name - if they wanted to channel Doria - could have been Dora Diana Elizabeth

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 06/06/2021 20:30

The other thing I think is very interesting is the difference between the British reaction to Harry and Meghan (in general, not just this) and the US / Americanised reaction. I say Americanised because a lot of social media communication has come to be dominated by American cultural norms which don’t necessarily fit with the British context.

I don’t think Americans in general understand the role of the royal family, I don’t think they understand how many British people see them (not even just monarchists). Even republicans understand that the royal family aren’t Kim and Kanye type celebs; they have a complex and controversial constitutional and social role. I don’t think people who have grown up in a republican society like the US can really understand the nuance of that, and how it shapes people’s reactions. So we end up with this boring ‘you’re all racist about Meghan’ discourse which is VERY reflective of the US discourse about itself and its past. I’m not saying Britain isn’t racist and doesn’t have a massive racist history btw. Just that I think a lot of US people lack the context to understand the dynamics here and their contributions to the conversation aren’t actually helpful as a result.

Two countries divided by a common language, etc.

@MrsWarleggan

Am I right in thinking The Queen would have to approve of the name prior to announcing? If so, she was happy with it, so all the bitchiness on this thread is completely pointless 🤷‍♀️
I don’t agree with all the posts saying the queen must be angry/hurt/annoyed etc but surely the queen having to agree is a total formality with no actual standing. She can’t actually stop them? However I don’t think anyone would use their grandma’s name if she didn’t want them to.
Whinginadeville · 06/06/2021 20:30

Gorgeous names but very strange to honour a Grandmother you've been slating and publicly abusing for months Hmm

Frezia · 06/06/2021 20:30

I remember your comments from other threads, you seem obsessed with people supposedly hating the UK for any given reason, especially immigrants** or EU citizens. It does not surprise me you have such strong bitter feelings towards Harry and Meghan.

BreakingtheIce · 06/06/2021 20:30

@JaniieJones

Can any of those who are being disingenuous and can't see the irony suggest why anyone would name a dc after the head of an institution that is allegedly racist and that offered no support which allegedly led to them having suicidal thoughts.

It is a funny one isn't it? Do we think they are reaching out and trying to make amends perhaps?

I think it more likely they are thinking of their bank balance and their marketability.

They haven't slated her though have they?

They haven't slated her though have they?

Their views on her parenting haven’t been exactly generous.

Perhaps they are reaching out so not to damage the Queen, perhaps they just want to honour her as they didn't say she was racist. Perhaps they just like the name. Perhaps they did it to cause a froth. Who knows? However you can dislike an institution but still respect those within it.

C130 · 06/06/2021 20:32

@Dunnesstores

Even if they asked the queens permission I would imagine she would feel no option but to agree. Can you imagine the theme for the next interview if she refused, something like the queen refused to have her only mixed race great grand child be named after her. They wouldn't mention that it was her personal childhood nickname they were appropriating, they'd make it sound like it was the name Elizabeth.
Really? I imagine that the Queen loved the idea of her Great-granddaughter bearing her much loved, childhood nickname.
Benjispruce3 · 06/06/2021 20:32

Well they have caused her a lot of upset and they must have known that would be the outcome.

fashionablefennel · 06/06/2021 20:33

This post sums up the craziness on here. A man is criticised for having the fucking audacity to use his own name 🤣🤣🤣

that's why this thread belongs in Classic Grin

My views on my own mother's parenting arent particularly generous but it doesn't mean I don't love her. It's circumstantial.
Stakhanovite · 06/06/2021 20:33

To me it feels really gimmicky and awkward.

oneglassandpuzzled · 06/06/2021 20:33
@EdithWeston Do you think they consulted the Queen before the Oprah interview too? Do you think she agreed to let them air an interview that made her husband’s last days more stressful while he lay dying of pancreatic cancer? It’s pretty appalling what they did and I can’t believe comments are being reported when anyone dares criticise them.
He died of heart failure.

Itreallyistimetochangethings · 06/06/2021 20:33

@hellosally

will any of the family see this baby? Thomas and the rest of the Markles? Charles , William and all her cousins? I gained a lot from my extended family. I feel so sorry for Archie and Lili to not have these opportunities
I Really don't get this way of thinking - People Leave their families and emigrate all the time and start new families thousand of Miles away, Australia, South Africa U.S - they are not the first. You really should stop wasting headspace to** "feel sorry for Archie and his sister" they will Be fine . Just like you and many others are fine if your family living down the road maybe!
ArmoireArmy · 06/06/2021 20:34

@dorangme it’s not his name, his name is Henry Charles Albert David, Duke of Sussex. He could have named his children Windsor or Mountbatten-Windsor

MaMelon · 06/06/2021 20:34

Well they have caused her a lot of upset and they must have known that would be the outcome

And got a lot of people talking - which keeps them in the limelight they adore.

Roussette · 06/06/2021 20:34

I never said your posts broke the guidelines, I said they are predictable, patronising, and pathetic as usual.

Glad you like them!

I'm not the one taking it personally, believe me. It's a name for a newborn little girl.
Get over it.

I don't go batshit, not my style at all. You just don't like my opinion. Tough!

Their views on her parenting haven’t been exactly generous.

So, what is this weird rule that you have to agree & support everything your parents/family do & never criticise their actions. I love my parents but they often annoy me & likewise.

Dying of pancreatic cancer? Lol where did you get THAT from?

smilesy · 06/06/2021 20:34

The origins of “Lilibet” for the Queen have been attributed to herself, Princess Margaret and her grandfather, George V. It’s not clear which one is correct. Lilibet is a real name, but in the context of Harry and Meghan’s daughter, it has clearly been chosen because of its association with the Queen. They have said as much I their press release. Prince Philip did use it, as well as Cabbage (mon petit chou) so it is intensely personal to the Queen.

QuiltingFlower · 06/06/2021 20:35

Did they hold their new baby daughter and name her for herself?

Not sure that they did.
