Thoughts on Prince William's speech?

I've been musing on this, I'm not sure I agree with the idea that the Bashir interview created a 'false narrative'. Obviously Diana was lied to, which is appalling, and I'm sure that fueled some of her paranoia but isn't it true that she was spied on at times e.g. with the squidgygate tapes? And she'd already collaborated with Andrew Morton saying many of the same things, and apparently wanted to do an interview after Charles gave his.

I don't know... it just feels odd to me that William is essentially asking for it to be struck from the record. He was apparently angry with her after the Bashir interview and was teased about it at school, which must have been horrible. Is he trying to protect her memory or is there an element of trying to tidy it all away?

@Samcro

he just dresses like a posh middle aged man. I don't think he needs a tie though.
I know, but is it too much to ask for a bit more spit and polish from the future king on a royal tour?

Bring back some glamour!

oneglassandpuzzled · 27/05/2021 10:07

His grandfather was a snappy dresser. And PC has some beautifully cut suits.

Roussette · 27/05/2021 10:13

I think he could dress a bit more fashionable, more snappy. He just always seems to wear the same.
I know a few men his age, friends of my DCs, and what they wear that isn't casual is much more interesting.

Roussette · 27/05/2021 10:15

one glass yes I agree on PC
Let's see W with a waistcoat or a pocket handerkerchief!

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 27/05/2021 10:49

I really liked the photos of them in the sand yachts and meeting the student coaches - the photos just looked really fun and relaxed. We were discussing before about what causes the Cambridges seem most aligned with, maybe sports is a good focus for them.

smilesy · 27/05/2021 12:45

I like the photos of them at the Drive-in last night. Nice touch to use PP’s Land Rover. Very funny photo of W leaning on the steering wheel, peering out of the windscreen to see the film 🤣

Definitely on for that!
sunnyblackwidow · 27/05/2021 13:30

I think he dresses so boringly - samey samey like a uniform - so that nobody comments on his clothes, not to detract from the causes they support, and to limit the judgement.

It must be sound destroying for Catherine to have a whole blog and many articles and threads dedicated to each item she wears, even judging her on the cost of a necklace etc.

GlencoraP · 27/05/2021 19:52

Lovely pictures today of Catherine meeting the little girl who had leukaemia who she had the conversation in lockdown with. She had promised in the phone all to wear a pink dress .

Also liked the conversation with Emma Stone and Emma Thompson

William once showed up for an engagement in a fleece so I think it's safe to say he didn't inherit his father's sartorial flair!

Good point Grin His casual dress is appalling.
GlencoraP · 27/05/2021 21:05

Honestly this place is mad, on another thread they are being castigated for wearing too expensive clothes and on here apparently they are too casual .

Samcro · 27/05/2021 21:55

Loved seeing kate meet the little girl.

catinboots123 · 28/05/2021 04:56

@AnnunciataZ

I can just hear the incredulity in your voice at the word fleece and it really made me laugh Grin

I like what I've seen of W&K and think they are on the right path. They have evolved into slightly old-fashioned, upper-middle class parents and the way he wears a warm woolly under his suit jacket reminds me of my granddad. He isn't threatened in any way by her popularity and seem to complement each other well - I also think slightly boring is good as people are showing respect to the titles they hold and not to them personally and they know that. I'm sorry I probably won't be here to see how they work the top job.

Mummy194 · 05/06/2021 12:43

William was gaslighting his mother from beyond the grave. All this linking of her death direct to the security has been revealed as lies, as Diana had already got rid of the security 2yrs prior. So Bashir did not make her paranoid as her brother claims.

I am quite sure the timing of rehashing this story from 25yrs ago now when H&M just did the Oprah interview was to plant doubt in people's minds about Oprah. Except they can't come out and straight shade Oprah since everyone has known her forever. DM readers keep saying about how H is being taken advantage of from the interviews he has had, that is the intended effect, but they are not fooling everyone.

Palace PR is working really hard, I see they sent Sophie to try and diminish Oprah to a mere chat show host now - even though she used one of her schools in SA for a PR visit.

The palace must have a dossier titled Oprah - how do we diminish her reputation. lol

ovensoff · 05/06/2021 13:37

I do not know why William said that and I totally disagree.
Yes, Diana may not have done the interview with Bashir. But she would have done an interview.
The palace quite clearly treated Diana terribly and Charles cheated on her. This is trying to rewrite history.

GlencoraP · 05/06/2021 18:01

If anyone knows about Diana’s mental state it’s William, he lived with it.she was his mother not some celebrity that he only knew through the pages of the gossip columns .

It’s well documented that Diana went through stages of being paranoid and believing that she was being spied on , probably with some justification. That evil Bashir man capitalised on and exploited her fears and made her believe the plots were real. He fanned the flames and she went to her death believing that the evidence of a plot to kill her which he showed her was genuine . It had a real effect on her mental health, she even had the floorboards taken up to check for bugs. I am not surprised William is angry, it’s not about whether she would have done an interview, it’s about the effect that the falsified bank statements had on her state of mind.

derxa · 05/06/2021 18:11

totally agree.
ovensoff · 05/06/2021 22:47

William was 15 years old and at boarding school. He will not know better than anyone else.

GlencoraP · 05/06/2021 23:00

Better than you

GlencoraP · 05/06/2021 23:04

And for the record I went to boarding school,I still knew my mother

ovensoff · 05/06/2021 23:34

I am not saying he did not know his mother. But teenagers often do not know exactly what is going on for their parents when they live together every day. The amount of time he saw her at 15 will not have been that great.
I am sure there will be other people who knew what was going on for her day to day much better.
But Charles had already given a public interview about their marriage. There is no way Diana was not going to tell her side.

Mummy194 · 06/06/2021 11:09

she even had the floorboards taken up to check for bugs.

It has been reported that Diana was long distrusting and doing these things before the Bashir interview, around the time she sacked staff. She basically repeated what she had already told Morton and replied to Charles, the interview was most likely going to go as it went with or without Bashir.

It was incredibly disrespectful of W to call her paranoid and pretend she somehow was not mentally stable. He very much is The Firm man.
