Thoughts on Prince William's speech?

I've been musing on this, I'm not sure I agree with the idea that the Bashir interview created a 'false narrative'. Obviously Diana was lied to, which is appalling, and I'm sure that fueled some of her paranoia but isn't it true that she was spied on at times e.g. with the squidgygate tapes? And she'd already collaborated with Andrew Morton saying many of the same things, and apparently wanted to do an interview after Charles gave his.

I don't know... it just feels odd to me that William is essentially asking for it to be struck from the record. He was apparently angry with her after the Bashir interview and was teased about it at school, which must have been horrible. Is he trying to protect her memory or is there an element of trying to tidy it all away?

PS I think going “up to London” originates from the early days of the railway, when there was an “up line” and a “down line.”

derxa · 26/05/2021 15:30

Other Scots take a different position on independence and also take the view that Scotland and England are indeed different countries with different histories and different legal systems - a point you have yourself made on this thread. So perhaps best not to roast other posters on this issue, which is tangential to the thread? It's complicated. Yes for me Scotland is a different country but is part of the United Kingdom hence the the name. Emotionally separate but politically together. I'm not roasting anyone. Anyway this will be my last tedious derail.

could be right. I always thought people just imagined where they are on the map. I get lost with east and west though(same with left and right lol)

Can we get back to the thread subject now, please 🙏

I'm Cornish and from the Lizard so call everywhere else Up Country because it is and that means anywhere North of the Tamar bridge.

KFleming · 26/05/2021 16:14

Scotland is not a 'there'

Everywhere is a “there” if you aren’t there. I refer to my hometown as “there” if it fits with the context.

The word there has ceased to have meaning with me after all these posts!

Samcro · 26/05/2021 16:15

if you point at the map you might say "its there"

who really cares though lol

I feel like it's run out of steam after all this other controversy 😄.

Yes, and that's a shame.

I'll try....

K&W went back to St Andrews Uni today where they first met. Must be strange for them, given the life they were living there, and the life they're living now.

Aspiringmatriarch · 26/05/2021 18:29

It must feel very strange. Do they go back there (apologies DerxaGrin) quite regularly or am I making that up? I'd feel very wistful in their shoes, we all have that nostalgia for our youth but imagine the freedom they had then compared to now. It's rather sad really.

More so Kate maybe? She had a carefree life at that point, William didn't. Although it was more carefree that it is now for him obviously.

It must've been quite poignant.

But I'm not one for going back because wonderful memories can be spoiled by revisiting places.

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 26/05/2021 18:41

I think William had a fairly carefree life at St A, not least because all his fellow students were threatened with disciplinary action if they went to the press with any gossip.

and you know this, how? were you there at the time?
Blossomtoes · 26/05/2021 20:55

It’s not difficult to believe that the other students were warned off talking to the press, is it? I’m pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that both William and Harry would occasionally feed their friends little titbits and cut them off immediately if they appeared in the press.

AnnunciataZ · 26/05/2021 21:05

How very Wagatha Christie!

Blossomtoes · 26/05/2021 21:06

I know!

Nishky · 26/05/2021 21:39

@HeadNorth ah thanks for clarifying- really hoping we can visit again this year-

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 26/05/2021 22:34

@SallyLockheart - why so angry?

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 26/05/2021 22:35

Also - get it up you.

Well, that reveals a lot about you, and none of it good.

Going back to the topic, I have actually liked the trip to Scotland this week.

They've been much more informal, and more hands on than they normally are, I think?

Looking at Catherine's outfits, they are definitely dressing appropriately for the weather and their activities. Although I suppose there have been no black tie events like there usually would be.

That said, I wish William wasn't so bloody low level smart casual all the time, I think he lets the side down a bit these days. Even at the cinema screening last night, he didn't wear a tie, it wouldn't kill him to dress up a bit occasionally.

I have no idea how it's gone down in Scotland, but I feel they've judged the mood a bit better for this tour than they have recently.

The boden type video they released was a little off key, and there have been some other bits and pieces that have felt forced, but the tour has seemed to be a bit more natural.

Maybe it is just because they are used to doing things this way, and are back in the saddle after being restricted through Covid?

Samcro · 27/05/2021 09:46

he just dresses like a posh middle aged man.
I don't think he needs a tie though.
