Thoughts on Prince William's speech?

I've been musing on this, I'm not sure I agree with the idea that the Bashir interview created a 'false narrative'. Obviously Diana was lied to, which is appalling, and I'm sure that fueled some of her paranoia but isn't it true that she was spied on at times e.g. with the squidgygate tapes? And she'd already collaborated with Andrew Morton saying many of the same things, and apparently wanted to do an interview after Charles gave his.

I don't know... it just feels odd to me that William is essentially asking for it to be struck from the record. He was apparently angry with her after the Bashir interview and was teased about it at school, which must have been horrible. Is he trying to protect her memory or is there an element of trying to tidy it all away?

Dear oh dear.... No, of course I don't think Scotland is a foreign country at all. Shock Why would you say that?

I will rephrase it....

'what a shame they couldn't be with them in Scotland for a week'

I hope that's better. It was just a turn of phrase. No more no less.

As I have to check and double check every single thing I post on these threads, for fear of being jumped on, I am afraid to say 'up there' escaped me. Hmm

derxa · 26/05/2021 07:42

The visit was arranged around William attending the opening ceremony of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

I am glad the other thread was deleted.(did not report) the deletion message hopefully means that the nasty ones about M will now go.

Roussette · 26/05/2021 07:46

I think it's best I avoid talking about their visit to Scotland. Who knows how I might say the wrong thing.

I'll finish by saying that some of the photos were nice, I liked the Orkney ones with Kate looking more casual.

Absolutely. This should be the rule of thumb now.

GucciJackie · 26/05/2021 07:48

Im Irish so none of it is any of my business but I think Kate finds it easy to be charming because her "charm" is underpinned by fairly genuine feelings of confidence, gratitude, optimism and contentment, and love!. I sound like her big fangirl and Im not really but she feels good and that puts others at their ease. If you're feeling in agood place then a charm offensive might be easy.

William seems angrier than Kate but then of course he has more sources of trauma. He still comes across as fairly authentic though. When we sense his anger it is not passive aggressive, it's direct. So I think he knows what he feels and why he feels it.

smilesy · 26/05/2021 07:56

They are in Scotland this week because William is undertaking ceremonial duties to do with the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Presumably the dates of this are fixed so that is why they are there this week.

smilesy · 26/05/2021 07:57

Cross post 🤣

This happens on MN all the time. People don't seem to understand that we have different term times, education system, legal system etc etc The Queen is not head of the Church of Scotland and she is not the Queen of England. Scotland is not a homogeneous mass. Scots are very varied with different political views, accents etc. Just like England strangely enough. Hence Scotsnet.

Roussette · 26/05/2021 08:09

So I get all of that... just because I said 'up there'?

I say it about Manchester, I say it about Newcastle, just yesterday one of our friends rang from Tyneside, hoping to call in to see us and I asked her what the weather was like 'up there'..
Unlike you, she didn't take offence.

I meant nothing by it, but you straightaway jump on me.

How has 'up there' meant that I think of Scotland as a homogeneous mass?
I don't. There is no need to lump me in with everyone on MN and
I don't need educating, thanks.

Itreallyistimetochangethings · 26/05/2021 08:11

@derxa

up there Hmm Scotland is a foreign country to you isn't it. I live 'here' in the Scottish Borders. The trouble is that the Royal family do love coming to Scotland. Charles has his Dumfries house project generating jobs for people in a deprived area of Ayrshire for a start.
What is wrong with this statement?. I could easily use that phrase "up there or down there". Genuinely interested in what's wrong with it or is it wrong and jumped on and turned into a negative just because it came from Rousette and is not an attack directed at M&H ?
Roussette · 26/05/2021 08:16

Thank you, yes. That is exactly it. And I'm sick to death of it to be honest.

I check and double check my posts continually but anything can be offensive if a person tries hard enough to find offence Hmm

derxa · 26/05/2021 08:42

What is wrong with this statement? You don't get it do you. Those sort of linguistic tells happen all the time on the broadcast media. Sports reporters talking about the England team and how 'we' are going to do. People saying Scotland is beautiful when parts of post industrial Lanarkshire certainly are not. Would you say England is beautiful?

I don't know what M&H have to do with it.

Roussette · 26/05/2021 09:03

I posted a long post but I've deleted it. Probably best.

I suggest @derxa you avoid all my posts from now on, you know I meant nothing from saying 'up there', I was trying to start dialogue about their visit to Scotland and I refuse to have all your dislike of how MNers talk about Scotland, hung on to me for something that is totally innocuous and harmless.

I can't believe how much I give you the benefit of the doubt on your posts too.

For heaven's sake Derxa. Many people would say England is beautiful, why not? If you don't live somewhere it's natural you would know less about it than someone who does and afaik Scotland and England are indeed two different countries. Why are you attacking Rousette over this? It's bizarre. Because she said 'up there'?? What if it was Cornwall and she said 'down there', is that offensive too? Maybe we should ban all words which indicate location? Ludicrous.

This article came up on a news feed. I wouldn’t normally quote GQ, but I thought this was an interesting read. Before anyone gets the arse that it’s anti Harry and Meghan, if you read it, it actually provides some insight into why the monarchy still survives today. I will warn that there is the odd side swipe at the Sussexes as a disclaimer, but on the whole it focuses on the monarchy as a whole which is why I am posting it.

Ludicrous i should imagine it would piss off some people in Cornwall as well. Let's face it the SE of England is the default centre of the universe isn't it. No wonder the SNP are doing so well. It's because of these othering attitudes.

Samcro · 26/05/2021 09:56

well I live down south and everyone assumes we are all in London!

got to say I am pleased that PW gets involved in football. I remember my dear old Dad moaning back in the 70's about the queen and her lack of interest. so it is a step forward. doubt we will see him at the snooker any time soon though.

Grin well I live down south and everyone assumes we are all in London! I know what you mean. Our main home is SE England and I have a farm in the Borders. Yes Scottish friends assume we have a house in that there London. There is ignorance on all sides.
HeadNorth · 26/05/2021 10:51

I live far further north than the Scottish borders and take absolutely zero offence at Rousette using the phrase 'up there' - I am bemused anyone could.

Anyway, for the poster saying W&K will do 'wonders for the travel industry' - no thanks. The Scottish highlands were overrun with tourists last summer, without the infrastructure to support them. Without foreign travel avalabile this summer, I fear this year may be the same - wall to wall campers and caravans abusing our access legislation by 'camping' on roadsides and lay-bys and leaving their rubbish and waste behind.

Aspiringmatriarch · 26/05/2021 11:03

Rousette was also talking about William who obviously lives in Norfolk so 'up there' if accurate in terms of direction of travel. Anyway, moving on..! 😄

It is very common, I think most of us would agree that we are not offended and we are all Located up there or down there. This is the first I have heard of anyone being offended at the phrase "up there or down there" I think @derxa was clutching at straws but I may be wrong and it is a sincere reaction. Only on MN Hmm
