The royal family

What were Harry and Meghan hoping to achieve?

This is an honest question not a chance to bash anyone. I'm curious about why Harry and Meghan would do this and what the consequences could be. They must have realised the massive fall-out this would cause. This could be the end of Harry's relationship with his family. But for what? Sympathy? Increased profiles? Honesty?

@Susie477

The purpose of the interview was to raise their profile in the US, so they can maximise their earnings.

The purpose of Meghan’s repeated lies during the interview was to embarrass & discredit the monarchy, against which she has grievances caused by her perception of the way she was treated. She knew that Oprah was not going to call her out on those lies, and that American audiences would not have detailed knowledge of U.K marriage laws or how royal titles work, so they wouldn’t spot them.

For republicans like me, it’s great fun watching the monarchy tearing itself apart. Long may it continue.

We’re told at the RF is irrelevant abroad and at the same time this scandal is hugely damaging to international reputation. I suspect that the truth is somewhere in the middle.

lllllllllll · 10/03/2021 07:42

They want the final word.

They don’t seem to understand that they will never have the final word. Already there’s a story in the one of the broadsheets apparently that paints the whole Meghan/Kate crying incident in a totally different light to how Meghan described it in the interview. And on and on and on it goes.

squishee · 10/03/2021 07:43

Power "(why did she live with her dad age 11-college?)"

Do you think it was anything at all to do with her dad's lottery win when she was 9?

Flyingdr · 10/03/2021 07:43

The woke camp H&M amuse me the most. They are the first to moan loudly about the government cutting down on free school meals and what not yet here they are supporting multi millionaires whose lifestyle could pay to improve the lives of millions of disadvantaged children around the globe saying they should get more public tax payers money even though they moved to a mansion in California and don't work anymore.

lllllllllll · 10/03/2021 07:44

What would they gain by staying silent?

The moral high ground? Airing family grievances in public is never a good look IMO. They’ve opened Pandora’s Box.

@PowerhouseMamma

Whatever they set out to achieve it has had more effect than they realise.

They have totally discredited the British monarchy. You might think that is alright, but I don't and I am pro-republic. I actually think this will have a knock on effect on our economic recovery. Our monarchy gets used quite a lot to sure up contracts and create relationships with other countries. Now she and the Kings in waiting have lost credibility. They have been accused of being racists. Thsi stuff sticks. Our whole country is now seen as an island of racists. Even the US president came out and supported her. Do you think that is going to be awkward when we eventually welcome him to the UK and he hob knob's with the Queen?

For me I see M&H, who I refuse from now to call Prince or Duke/Duchess as they don't deserve it, acted like spoilt brats. I know people like this in real life. They take the facts and twist them for their own ends. Harry is a damaged, unsupported manchild who has fallen in love with an equally damaged person who has form for throwing people under buses when she doesn't get her own way or they have a minor falling out, as family do. Her dad, paternal family, her mum (why did she live with her dad age 11-college?), Jessica Mulroney, her ex husband and now the whole royal family.

What did they want? I think M wanted revenge. I think H is weak and like a lot of men. I don't like my in-laws and it would be very easy for me to turn on the water works and get my DH to see less of them and move further away, but then I don't get off on divide and conquer. She has done this. I think they wanted the RF to backtrack and say OK, here is your Prince title, here is your massive castle and 4 SUV's of FBI paid for by the British Tax Payers. Go do what you like and we will still pay. I think M&H are both very naive.

The person I feel most sorry for here is Charles. He's a knob but he loves his DC. He has paid for a lot for them and they have humiliated him. He doesn't deserve this. It's like when I say to my DC that they are lucky to have what they do when they moan to me and they then say "I didn't ask for any of that".

I hope that as Brits our press just don't cover them anymore and cut off their narcissistic supply.

PowerhouseMamma very well put. If only the likes of Piers Morgan could have put it so rationally.
lemans · 10/03/2021 07:50

They are just reality stars now, so they need to do whatever keeps the money coming in.

randomer · 10/03/2021 07:50

@Bluntness100, nail head you hit.

PresentingPercy · 10/03/2021 07:54

@PowerhouseMamma

You are absolutely right. I now think the Queen will keep the Royal Family’s views and discussions behind closed doors as she says. She sees this as a private family matter and not a matter of state.

I too don’t see a way back for M&H. I think they no longer associate themselves with the UK. So if the uk is collateral damage, so what? She’s American and has rejected the uk.

I also think the one with the biggest issues is Harry. Yes, some elements of the press are awful but there are legions that cover the Royal family and their causes that barely ever criticise them. They photograph them doing their visits and report favourably on their clothes etc. However when the public help to pay for the RF they do want to know about poor behaviour as well as the good stuff. Harry might blame newspapers but he’s never going to stop on-line comments. When his mother was alive, we didn’t have social media. Newspapers are not what they were in terms of the dissemination of info. Social media is significantly bigger. Harry needs help to be able to cope with the media and definitely needs to stop linking his family security to his mother’s situation. Had he stayed in the uk, he had security. By leaving he gave it up. So he has to deal with it. Not the RF.

Mmn654123 · 10/03/2021 07:57

William spent years preparing Kate for life in the Royal Family. She went in with eyes wide open.

Harry failed to do the same for Meghan. History is repeating itself because he rushed in without a thought for her mental well-being and because he ignored what sounds like attempts to get him to slow down and take things at a steady pace. Meghan was older than Kate though and so they probably felt they didn’t have time to take it slowly. But Harry is failing to take any responsibility for what happened when he chose to bring his bride into the family so quickly. Baffling. He must have known she didn’t have a clue.

PresentingPercy · 10/03/2021 07:59

I actually think Prince Andrew has been slammed in the press. I’m not really seeing much difference here. He and Fergie were criticised all the time. He’s done a disastrous interview which proved keeping quiet was the better policy.

isitfridayyet1 · 10/03/2021 07:59

This thread is full of so many hateful people! Wow.

isitfridayyet1 · 10/03/2021 08:02

@Flyingdr you amuse me most with the term 'woke' as now that is used as an insult to people who have a shrewd of empathy for others. It is also a term used by racists to denigrate people who support and stick up for people of colour so thank you for outing yourself. Regards, Mrs Woke lol

lollipoprainbow · 10/03/2021 08:03

@Mmn654123 Kate's pushy mother orchestrated the whole William thing didn't she?! In Harry and Megan's engagement interview he said he had warned her what she was getting into and she shall said yes! So I don't agree that he hadn't prepared her for royal life.

lydia2021 · 10/03/2021 08:03

I have not seen the interview, only bits on the news. Two hours in a long time for me to sit through anything. Due to health issues. I said as much on another MN thread. I think I was reported for saying about the two hours.
The sad thing about this whole saga was no one seems to have learnt anything about Diana's hounding and demise. After she died, there was an outpouring of kindness for fellow citizens. This saga shows that nothing has changed at all.

FeelthewrathofthesuperRad · 10/03/2021 08:06

I think they wanted to put their side across. They also need to keep their profiles up, like it or not if they want to provide a consistent level of security for their children and live the lifestyle they have become accustomed to they will need to fund it somehow.

lllllllllll · 10/03/2021 08:07

In Harry and Megan's engagement interview he said he had warned her what she was getting into and she shall said yes!

I remember that too!

Turth · 10/03/2021 08:08

Whatever their intentions were they managed to get rid of Piers Morgan and that is a great day for many, many people. Not least the people who worked on the show who a friend who works on it told me celebrated when he was sacked.

jasjas1973 · 10/03/2021 08:10

Yet keeps his titles, military roles and protected by the RF.....

No 'Mail poll on his popularity - even though he refuses to help the FBI into their investigations into a convicted pedophile.

Yes Fergie got the hate of the British press, as did Diana and Wallis Simpson, a poster on here even blaming Meghan for kids not getting school meals.....

Why should anyone keep quite about racism and 'press treatment?

Todaysanewday · 10/03/2021 08:11

@Plexie

To build a marketable brand that they can commercialise to create income.

The interview reminded me of those scam emails that contain grammatical errors and typos that are supposed to weed out on-the-ball people and ensnare the gullible. There were so many inconsistencies and contradictions that are obvious to UK viewers or anyone with a decent level of knowledge about the Royal Family, but are being swallowed by the more general American/worldwide audience. That's the audience they are aiming at, to portray an appearance of victimhood to elicit sympathy which they can trade on.

Exactly!
AliceLives2021 · 10/03/2021 08:13

They are both nearly 40. Now they have had their version of the truth aired perhaps they can enjoy life and relax a bit before the book deal.

speakout · 10/03/2021 08:14

I feel sorry for H.

He is going to be left in a tricky situation after the inevitable split.

Dragon23 · 10/03/2021 08:17

I think they feel very aggrieved by how they were treated, both while working Royals and how it was handled when they were leaving. They wanted to address that.

I think there are 2 sides to every story as the royal statement implies- ‘while some recollections may vary’ I suspect that there was a foundation of truth to a lot has been said, however how people recall events varies and whiles lots of things were hinted at, detail was lacking. There is fault on both sides for this damaged relationship.

I also have to wonder what Harry hoped would be achieved with bringing up the discussion around Archie’s skin tone. He caused a lot of speculation as to who said it due to being so non specific about who and what was said, then there is the confusion as to when it was said. I think MM has been treated appallingly by some of the media and some of it is racist. Could a member of RF also directed racism towards MM, of course and that is worrying but I’m not sure the way it has been hinted at by Harry and MM is particularly helpful- it isn’t like the RF are come out and address publicly. You also have to remember that Harry had said how damaging the media has been on his own mental health in the past and although he has never spoken about it directly, his parents various bombshell interviews have probably affected him. In future Archie is going to see that a member of his family made racist comments about him and the other bombshells. It seemed that Harry may want to reconcile in future given he said time is a great healer but that may be difficult for Archie when he is older given what has been said. I would of hoped that Harry would of learnt from the impact of his parents own interviews on him so to have not brought Archie into it but he did and that’s out there for Archie to see now forever.

ivykaty44 · 10/03/2021 08:19

money, they need money to live the lavish life style.

Strangely I thought they were both fine and good for them to get away from UK press etc

but after her terrible interpretation of why her son wasn't given the title prince, the comment about getting married in secret 3 days prior just the 3 of us.....

I now think she has literally no credibility in anything she says and it has certainly put me off the couple, as I see her fabricating event
