Anyone else in favour of it?

I’m not entirely sure what their purpose is either.

What happened in many countries with all rulers, historically, is hardly something unique to our RF. Who can yet say what Andrew did, exactly? We wait to see. Being a paedophile is a strong assertion but not yet proven. That’s a bit tabloid journalism.

The reason it’s safer to stay with the RF is all about stability. We have seen when populism takes hold, anywhere, it leads to rifts and destabilisation. Farage has been an example. We are better off retaining people who know the job. Mostly understand it snd are not openly political. I disliked Charles’s letters but overall I don’t want any of the people named in a previous post. None. There is no need for any seismic eruptions in this country and abolishing the monarchy would be the biggest crisis. Ever. So it’s not going to happen. I’d just get used to it. If s time is desperately unhappy there are other places to live that might make you happier. It’s perfectly ok for anyone to say the uk isn’t for them but few places are any better!

I disagree.

We've had a practice with Brexit and it hasn't resulted in a total meltdown. Disentangling state and one family would be a breeze in comparison.

The royals might be impartial but in all honesty, apart from the actual HoS (king/queen even), do we need the rest of them for ribbon cutting and hand shaking?

How likely is any royal going to intervene if there was a government crisis?? Did we not have BoJo acting unlawfully with prorogation of the parliament which the Queen approved?? Laughable really..

What is the point of the rest of the royals exactly, surely there are more deserving people who can handle that. We already have numerous charity patrons who are less of the figureheads and more involved and genuinely interested.

twinklystar23 · 15/03/2021 12:38

I would want a HoS who would hold in check MP's for expenses, proroguing parliament, and deals with their mates, inflated pay rises for senior advisers, the list goes on. If we keep royalty/slimmed down version then it seems completely unaccepatable that they influence government and are allowed to keep their incomes hidden. Think we should get rid of the elitist private schools, hereditary peers lords etc. I think if some people want to keep the monarchy, for reasons theyve posted, to do with culture, religion and the queen/king being head of state then there needs to be some clear rules around any intervention, in the democratic process. I also think The tabloid press, should either be held to account. It either becomes a magazine, but not serious journalism..

YogaLite · 15/03/2021 16:42

I really don't see how royals would ever influence the government, all they ever do is approve whatever PM puts in front of tgem. Confused

I wonder how kate feels when she reads this thread.

It’s not personal Kate. But I agree me and you are equals and so I shouldn’t be funding your lifestyle when I can’t afford that for myself.

I think you’re in laws and parents can do that for you and your kids :). Hope the three kids are fine, mine are too.. thanks for not asking😜

Disclaimer: I know the chances of her reading this is quite non existent but just trying to stay in touch with my empathetic kind non angry side while asking for the monarchy to be abolished.

Because the other side of me is angry for multiple reasons about the history of colonialism and the stain it’s left on the monarchy but let’s shut that down 🤣

PersimmonTree · 15/03/2021 17:57

Let's not shut it down, as it leads to problems further down the line. Things need to be said, acknowledged and processed by this country, so we can all move forward without dragging a shedload of medieval baggage around.

Have you been reading the same news as the rest of us?
PresentingPercy · 15/03/2021 23:38

The Queen is a constitutional monarch. Of course she doesn’t intervene in what the elected government does! Honestly. What utter rubbish.

I think a lot of posters should watch Citizen Smith.

A lot of posters are probably getting their info from relevant, up-to-date sources rather than 70s sitcoms but I'll add that suggestion to the list of recommended reading and viewing, thanks.

Yes. And in other news, earth is flat too. Do you ever read news or is citizen whatever your only source of information?
