Abolishing the Royal Family

Anyone else in favour of it?

I’m not entirely sure what their purpose is either.

I am well aware of the nature of how the monarchy and parliament works. Who on earth could possibly be a President here? We would still have the RF on the sidelines. We are not about to get rid of them so it’s ridiculous to speculate. We would never agree on a president. “None of the above” would be the resounding response.

That’s why it’s easier to keep our history with a constitutional monarch. They are separate from politics. Yes they are rich and they should probably pay more tax. But that’s not the same as wanting them gone and some nobody in their place. We do appear to prefer the monarchy. Even if we don’t, just saying other countries are better because they don’t have one is a flawed argument. That model doesn’t work for us and few countries have our history of monarchy. You might not agree with the monarchy but it’s better than the alternatives if it can modernise.

Blueberries0112 · 13/03/2021 16:06

a lot of US politicians (not everyone though) have came from a long line of family being in politics or laws. At times , I often wonder are they really that much different from monarchy? Hmm Grin

KonTikki · 13/03/2021 16:14

I would vote to keep the Monarchy, but a referendum could be held for just the immediate Royal Family to decide ...

I think the Queen, Charles and Andrew would vote to keep the status quo.

Philip, Anne, Edward and William would vote to abolish the RF and become a Republic.

Camilla and Kate would probably like to keep things as they are, but Kate would go along with William on this.

After all, they're the ones having to front all this, they can decide !

Frankly, it's ridiculous to have a situation where the head of state of a modern democracy is determined by blood and primogeniture. And while no one is suggesting guillotining them, as far as I'm aware, I think they would retire relatively quickly into a similar well-heeled obscurity to that of many aristocratic, landowning families. And that certainly William, if not Charles, would actively embrace that.

And I think you must have a very poor opinion of the British public to think that it couldn't field some perfectly decent presidential candidates with a proven record of public service and a wide appeal, and choose one among them for a finite term. Other countries manage it all the time. Or do you genuinely believe that no credible candidates could be found purely because of the continued existence of Charles, William, George etc?

Tianatiers · 13/03/2021 16:45

Yes, I think end it with the Queen. Really don't think they're necessary. I think they could do good charity work as a wealthy, high profile family if they are so inclined to use their privilege for a good cause. Or they can just go and live off their wealth somewhere quietly like other aristocratic families.

the80sweregreat · 13/03/2021 17:01

I think that people won't be that enamored with King Charles. He won't appeal to the young at all. The coronation will be a another big spectacular event that will cost millions I suppose.
Most young people I speak to don't care about any of them really.
It'll be fascinating to see what happens as the Queen is their glue at the moment.

Blueberries0112 · 13/03/2021 17:03

Do we still have to curtsy to King Charles if he invited us over a friendly coffee lol don’t worry I will do it

HedgeOwl · 13/03/2021 17:06

I had a friend who was anti royal family and I would defend them/the tourism etc etc
Since the whole Megan/Harry debacle and their behaviour during covid, I think they should go.
Harry has done the right thing, if he was born to a farmer he doesn’t have to be a farmer.
The cost dresses, why is it a uniform? Why can’t the women wear flat shoes and trousers?
The royals moved between homes during lockdown or just before and back again. No one else was. The goi if to visit hospital staff for moral hillocks and getting within 1m unmasked of people. Going to the theatre when others weren’t alone to leave their house etc

PresentingPercy · 13/03/2021 17:13

Diana wore flat shoes and trousers. So does Kate.

No. We couldn’t agree on a candidate to be president. I cannot think of a single suitable person who would want the job. They will not want to be seen as supplanting they RF. You dream on if you think that’s a goer. It’s not.

PresentingPercy · 13/03/2021 17:14

Who has a record of public service that’s not political or would agree to replacing the Queen?

littlebillie · 13/03/2021 17:39
Biscuit
willibald · 13/03/2021 17:42

I'd vote to keep them just so vengeful, spiteful whingers Harry and Meghan have the pleasure of watching William made Prince of Wales one day and then watch him be coronated whilst they seethe.

Blueberries0112 · 13/03/2021 17:43

Meghan and Harry don’t care.

the80sweregreat · 13/03/2021 17:45

I know lots of royalists. All walks of life , but they tend to be older people.

You will probably get a heart attack if Meghan became Vice President to Oprah. Get a life! Grin

Why the fuck would I care what goes on thousands of miles away in a country I don't live in, much less have a heart attack over it Grin?

Get a grip Grin.

Blueberries0112 · 13/03/2021 17:49

Or first woman president, and they have to let her in like Trump

willibald · 13/03/2021 17:49

@Blueberries0112

Meghan and Harry don’t care.
Haahaa! Sure they won't. That's why they didn't give up all the titles and place in the succession for Hazza and his kids since they don't care so much Hmm.

Vengeful, spiteful, seething, whingers.... This is too much anger you are harbouring towards people and it will not do you any good. Aso, those thousands of miles also work the other way around. 🤦🏻‍♀️
Thewithesarehere · 13/03/2021 17:51

And*

RubyViolet · 13/03/2021 17:51

I should a bet on Piers Morgan to be President within 7 years.
First U.K. President made from the same mould as Trump.
Morgan, Gemma Collins, Corbyn, Blair, Farage. The new identity politics would deliver us a populist President.

CrispyMonster · 13/03/2021 17:53

Yup, get rid. Waste of time and waste of space.

I wasn't the one who went on telly to slag off my family or complain my funds had been cut off when I was 36-years-old. 😂😂😂 Hilarious!

Surely if your family is so horrible you wouldn't want anything to do with them, much less any titles from them or place in the line of their succession or cry foul your son didn't get more titles. Grin

Funny AF!

There are countries in this world where there is no monarchy but they have seen some forms of authoritarian governments, military for example. This ridicule of public’s opinion and vote is how these governments keep a grip on the poor people. ‘See? This politico is utterly corrupt, we are far better, aren’t we?’ The only reason Western countries have developed so far is the sheer power of democracy. Don’t ridicule your privilege.

Well, we already have BoJo as PM. Piers cannot ever be president. Alas. Besides, isn't he very anti-gun and gun-holding? I wouldn't expect he'd become president even if he was American due to his no guns stance.

Might wind up PM, though. Stranger things have happened.
