Remember when Obama lobbied British voters not to vote for Brexit? And Trump lobbied voters to vote for Brexit?

Yes, and they were both out of order and should have kept out of it.

jeffgoldblumlovespenguins · 23/09/2020 18:49

This is all well and good, but what about the strange stories of Tom cruise , posted in the grazia link?
Surely this is worthy of discussion! 😉

Drat you made me go back and read it, how am I going to get the image of his fast growing zit prowess out of my head! Grin
WatershipDown7 · 23/09/2020 19:07

Do tell about the TC stories?

Ninjava · 23/09/2020 19:08

Zit prowess??? I’m going to have to read now. Obviously a real quality mag!

@Roussette - I'm talking generally, they seem to be pronouncing on a lot of matters, much of it good and positive in itself, but I'm just wondering why you'd film yourself and promote yourself as arbiters of social progress, justice and inclusion, not having held significant positions in said arenas. Tis all.

Maireas · 23/09/2020 19:16

Obama telling the British they'd go "to the back of the queue" if they voted Brexit did annoy a lot of people.

Ninjava · 23/09/2020 19:17

He grows big zits, stands on a box to look taller, had to audition for a girlfriend and will only be filmed running on his own (presumably because he can’t actually run whilst on his box).

Riveting.

SwordfishShashlik · 23/09/2020 19:21

I do wish Tom Cruise would come out of the closet. It’s 2020 after all.

Love
Peace
Tolerance
Respect

Ninjava · 23/09/2020 19:31

Back on topic, I think the fact that both the BBC and the Guardian have reported critically on this shows what a big misstep it is. Also love how H says about not being able to vote in the UK - yes because the royals have so much power and influence that it would cause constitutional issues, which is very clearly illustrated by this stupid video. I for one will be very interested to see what transpired from their annual review, I get the impression that it is not going to be pretty!

Maireas · 23/09/2020 19:50

Why does Harry claim that he couldn't vote in the UK? He is permitted by law, if not custom. They act as if the man had no civil rights whatsoever.

lakeswimmer · 23/09/2020 20:16

I agree. As a US citizen MM can say what she wants about voting BUT she only has the "voice" she has because she married a British royal family member who aim to be politically neutrally so it's not unreasonable that some would think she's abusing her privilege.

Harry's opinion on American voting is irrelevant and I think he's overstepping the mark. I thought Obama's comments on the EU ref were out of line and they really annoyed me at the time. I think they damaged the remain vote.

Even DH (who takes no interest in royal matters) commented on this today and said WTF is going on with Harry?

WatershipDown7 · 23/09/2020 20:23

Why should anyone anywhere care at all what M and H think? They are irrelevant. M is only well known because of who she married. As an ex working member of the RF , Harry is no longer relevant in the UK, never mind the US. They are both being incredibly pompous and self important.

I couldn’t see the link in the post but glad I wasn’t missing out on much.
froggygoneacourting · 23/09/2020 20:30

She literally just said that people should vote. Practically everyone I’m FB friends with has said the same thing.

Why obsessively follow them when it’s obvious that Meghan can’t so much as breath without the usual suspects getting in a tizzy about how awful and terrible it is? If I hated someone that much, I’d just ignore them.

froggygoneacourting · 23/09/2020 20:31

*breathe (typo)

Maireas · 23/09/2020 20:36

@lakeswimmer - absolutely, good points.

No obsessive following here - I knew about it because DH mentioned it so he must have seen it on the BBC or something. He's def not a royal follower but he does give woke celebs short shrift Grin
Eaumyword · 23/09/2020 20:49

I don't particularly follow them, but M&H can't seem to let a month go by without drawing international attention to themselves, which creates discussion.
I agree that H particularly shouldn't be pontificating on political matters when he is currently a guest in that country and they are still using royal titles.
Aol quotes Graham Smith of 'Republic' as saying "Harry can be an activist or a royal. He can't be both."
A pp mentioned if H is banging on about online negativity, they need to be shutting down the worst of the 'Sussex Squad' behaviour. Now that's obsessive behaviour.

lakeswimmer · 23/09/2020 20:55

I agree the "Sussex Squad" has been terrible and H&M have actually endorsed some of their activities when SS have raised money in their names. Raising money is generally a good thing, of course, but when its accompanied by abuse and threats about other people you'd have thought H&M might put out a statement asking them to rein it in. After all, they seem to comment about everything else that goes on in the world!

StartupRepair · 23/09/2020 21:28

The positioning of Harry as a pitiable disenfranchised UK citizen is laughable.

Yes, surely they should demonstrate the values they preach in their own lives? If they did, I would take them more seriously (even allowing for the word salad Grin).
froggygoneacourting · 23/09/2020 21:48

M&H can't seem to let a month go by without drawing international attention to themselves.

Surely that’s due to the huge widespread international interest (and often obsessive interest) in them? They aren’t “drawing attention to themselves”, it’s the media and general public choosing to make them the center of attention. No one can make themselves the center of attention on this kind of scale unless the media/public choose to show that scale of interest.

The “please vote” message is no different from what every other celeb and public figure from the most minor actress up has done. Most of them to little attention. The only difference is when Meghan does it it generates huge attention, when less famous people do the exact same thing it does not. All Meghan has to do is breathe and it’s reported around the world and endlessly scrutinised and debated online.

Maireas · 23/09/2020 22:00

No, Meghan can breathe and do whatever she likes - even have a totally private life. She chooses to have a very public life and they have a PR firm promoting them. That's fine, they want a high profile and to be celebrities - fine! Just don't pretend you're trying to be private people besieged by a cruel and intrusive press.
