Harry and Meghan News thread

I thought we could have a thread for latest news. MN did say they didn't mind one or two threads. And no rules except stick to MN guidelines. It's Meghans birthday today I just read. And the Queen has wished her a very happy birthday on the royal Instagram page according to that popular Oracle the DM.

When is the next round of the legal action?

My0My · 06/08/2020 08:31

I think it’s the main hearing unless any other spat comes up in the meantime.

I think the judge feels it might matter about publicly naming witnesses. This is, after all, a case about who released information to the press as far as the defence is concerned. We possibly haven’t heard of them but that’s not the point.

OneMile · 06/08/2020 09:40

I think the ruling is the correct one, if the names were released and the witnesses were hounded by the press it would make a fair hearing very difficult. It places Meghan in a difficult position though - there is no easy way out of these proceedings now.

If the ruling had not been in her favour, she would could have 'respectfully' bowed out stating that she was doing so in deference to the privacy of her friends. She would have a big costs bill but would save face - her actions were to protect others from harm. Feeds perfectly into the victim narrative.

Now she either withdraws - with no real reason other than she knows she is not going to win. Huge loss of face.

Or she continues with the massive risk that she loses - and she and the other witnesses are cross examined at length. Look at the revelations in the Johnny Depp hearing....

The longer it goes on the greater the costs and the loser pays.

I think this is rapidly becoming a no win situation. The mail knows this and knows the media value of a show trial.

OneMile · 06/08/2020 09:45

And if you read the Judge's reasoning, the 'anonymity' is temporary - he is unlikely to allow this to continue if these witnesses are to give evidence. He is also very critical of both parties and the way they have been feeding the media and whipping this case up. He name checks Omid Scobie in this regard.

Oh at last! I've been wanting a discussion that speculates on earning potential for a while now.

Am I correct in thinking they are not going to see a penny from Finding Freedom? In which case they've taken a lot of flack for very little return. Far from sharing "their side of the story" they've actually made themselves less marketable IMHO. People want to pay them to get the inside goss on Royal life and they've spilled it. Or rather the authors of the book have. What else is there to tell?

Watching videos of their public speaking engagements. MM comes across as really natural and personable. Of course she can engage an audience, she's an actress. But the speeches are generally quite short and about things like female empowerment etc. etc. But PH is just NOT a great speaker. He fumbles around, reads from notes, looks and sounds uncomfortable. It's very cringe.

Now, if I was inclined to spend $500-$1,000 on a pair of tickets to a charity dinner and I wanted to be entertained, if I had the choice between 5 minutes of MM banging on about Girl Power and then PH preaching environmental carbon footprint save the world when I knew they just arrived by private jet and helicopter OR seeing the Obamas give an entertaining hour or so on subjects like building a successful career in law as a black woman (hard enough for a white woman, look at RBG), inside the White House or how they basically made it to the top by sheer application and hard work then I KNOW what I would be spending my money on.

I KNOW that Americans are very credulous when it comes to Royalty and will turn up to the opening of a envelope if a Royal is involved, but if I was promoter seeking to make money in hard times and I had the choice of the Obamas or some third rate ex Royals who have already hung their dirty washing out to dry then I know who I would choose.

Post Covid there's going to be a lot less money sloshing around and even well off celebrities will be watching their pennies as out of work folk like you and me won't have the cash to splash on movies/merchandising/ perfumes/designer clothing that keeps all these people afloat. Plus companies who traditionally hired these sort of people to speak at lavish dinners or events either won't be hosting those type of events, won't make money because of social distancing or will be wary of being seen to do so when they've just laid off 10,000 staff.

World economies have been built and now destroyed by the same discretionary spending which MM PH and many others were relying on to sustain their livelihoods.

WinnieTheW0rm · 06/08/2020 09:58

I think Covid has put a huge hole in many people's plans

It's far from clear when the US will be functioning in a recognisable way, so they will just have to sit it out. Actual RL speaking engagements and the big fundraisers are out for the time being.

They had not announced their intentions (the 'entity' was never fully described) and the original plans might not be realistic or even possible now. And public attitudes change.

But with a crisis comes a whole new set of opportunities. We'll have to wait and see.

Given the huge backlog in the courts, when the the main trial likely to take place?

OneMile · 06/08/2020 10:00

I have always been sceptical about this huge earning power on the speaker circuit as well.

The pull of speakers is the content of their speech - people want great stories, anecdotes or expert knowledge.

I am sure they have great stories but they surely can't tell them - as it is drawing on their Royal status which they are not allowed to do. Neither of them have any real expert knowledge either.

You can really only get away with fluffy speeches about not very much - if you are doing them for free as a Royal as part of your duties.

Viviennemary · 06/08/2020 10:00

There has been a lot written about their earning potential. At first the papers were writing it could be around £100M a year. Shock Whether that would have been the case is anybody's guess. And now with Covid events aren't even happening. Only online ones and that's not really the same. So we'll have to wait and see.

Well they have their “passions” to talk about but no actions. Being burn into a certain family doesn’t give you any credibility at all in terms of what you have personally achieved. Meghan is different but it’s been gained by marriage. Nothing hugely special before that.

Amal Cluny has had a very interesting life prior to George. Ditto the Obamas from ordinary folk to stellar careers.

Viviennemary · 06/08/2020 10:50

I'd be interested in what Harry had to say about his work in Africa but certainly wouldn't want to listen to a lecture from him on carbon footprints. Not sure I'd be interested in anything Meghan gave a speech about because these subjects wouldn't really interest me unless they come from a totally self-made person who didn't have privileges and overcame the odds. But she does look nicely made up. So I wouldn't mind knowing what makeup brand she uses. I read some Charlotte Tilbury.

Can I ask a question? Where do you think they will be in 5 years? Asking so we can revisit the thread in 2025 and see if our predictions came true!

Viviennemary · 06/08/2020 11:14

Well I certainly wouldn't have speculated that both of them would have upped sticks and moved to LA. Even with all picky reporting I must say Meghan did carry on attending events throughout her pregnancy. She could easily have got out of going by saying she wasn't up to it. I think with all the Covid putting paid to their plans they could well be back here. If I was them I'd be thinking Archie could have a better life in the UK than where they are now. With the extended family of young Royals and all these acres of estates to play in and privacy protected. No drones or paparazzi at Balmoral. Midges though I think. You can't have it all. Grin

My first reaction was Divorced! However that’s a bit mean.

Just doing the round of highly paid talks in the USA based on their passions and their interests. They will highlight “causes” and land their names to them. But in terms of real achievement, not a lot. Their success or otherwise will depend on how much money they can raise and how judiciously it’s spent. If it’s seen to be ending up as income for them, then it’s very doubtful they will continue to be of interest. But the media will still like to have stories about them.

It was interesting last night on the Portillo Railway journeys programme. He visited the chateaux where Wallis Simpson went as she was hounded by the press. They actually married there with 15 guests. So Edward VIII had a wedding so small it barely registered. The monarchy left them behind. If it wasn’t for Wallis’s jewels, what would we remember them for now? Living an empty shallow life is all.

My0My · 06/08/2020 11:21

As speculation these posts will probably be deleted! That’s a prediction!

Bumlooksbig · 06/08/2020 11:37

Amal Clooney has had a very interesting life prior to George

I wouldn't mind hearing Amal her speak about her life and career either. As you say, it's life experience that counts. MM's life experience seems to boil down to getting pissed off that Kate wouldn't take her pap shopping and that the Queen's Aide wouldn't rush back from looking after HRH at Windsor to unlock the Royal Tiara. It's a bit too Kardashian for me.

Viviennemary · 06/08/2020 11:48

I don't suppose even they themselves know where they will be in five years time. Does anybody in these uncertain times. Even the royals aren't immune to spanners in the works. And I don't just mean H&M. When you think Princess Anne split up with her first husband and then divorced the papers tried to make a thing of it. And then her remarriage as a divorcee caused some tut tutting. But she remained tight lipped and it's all now water under the bridge.

I have no doubt Meghan will be successful and in the public eye. She has that sort of absolute drive and ambition that she will get what she wants. Harry, I don't know - if they are together I think he will be in a supporting, lesser role. He is vulnerable I think, not because of her but because of his own demons.

Wolfgirrl · 06/08/2020 15:18

@OneMile not really. Despite all her ambition she didnt get any 'big' acting roles. I would say Suits was 'medium'.

Wolfgirrl · 06/08/2020 17:44

Interesting she will be the interviewer not the interviewee, and that she got in touch with them..

KatherineParr4 · 06/08/2020 17:45

I shuddered at the 'reached out'. Presumably that meant begged for the gig.

Viviennemary · 06/08/2020 18:16

Is this the same event that the papers talked about a few weeks ago that Meghan would be doing with Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton. One of the two.

If this is the calibre of work she can expect going forward it is worrying for her. I cant imagine it will pay much?

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 06/08/2020 18:18

Thirsty, thirsty, thirsty!

Bumlooksbig · 06/08/2020 18:49

Is she actually going to get paid to do this interview? They've made it sound like she "wanted to be involved" because she believes in what they do or some tripe. I could maybe see a small token payment to defray expenses, but I hardly think they had budgeted to pay her, otherwise, why not have involved an A-lister from the get-go?
