Harry and Meghan News thread

I thought we could have a thread for latest news. MN did say they didn't mind one or two threads. And no rules except stick to MN guidelines. It's Meghans birthday today I just read. And the Queen has wished her a very happy birthday on the royal Instagram page according to that popular Oracle the DM.

There seems to be nasty unsupporting press on both sides of the Atlantic....

Can Harry even buy a house in America? Rules for immigrants are notourisly tough, and as far as I'm aware, but do correct me if I'm wrong, Harry doesn't have citizenship or a green card, and maybe that is the reason for it possibly being in Meghans name? I wouldn't think it's anything sinister

You don't need citizenship or a green card to buy a house. We live in the US on visas and bought one. I'm sure as the spouse of a US citizen (and royalty) he would have no problems being added to the mortgage and title of the house

SunbathingDragon · 13/08/2020 21:35

I understood that the house was bought from a Russian, which implies house ownership isn’t to do with citizenship.

Theoretically, surely, it’s Charles’ house due to the capital. H&M are unemployed so that’s probably why it’s a company of Meghan’s that bought/got the mortgage on it.

KatherineParr4 · 13/08/2020 22:15

@StartupRepair

Bought from a Russian oligarch, apparently.
There is a rather disturbing pattern emerging here. The house in Toronto was loaned by a Russian oligarch too..
SunbathingDragon · 13/08/2020 22:22

Was the $10 mil under the asking price what it had been reduced down to, or was it just sold for considerably less than it was currently being marketed for?

Eaumyword · 13/08/2020 22:25

I am reliably informed by my Million Dollar Listing programme that it's a buyer's market in the US at the mo, so if you've got a spare £10m or have a generous parent who does, you could snap up a total steal! (*at £10m!)

Ritascornershop · 13/08/2020 22:49

Toronto? Vancouver Island (Brentwood Bay to be precise) you mean?

I don’t understand why, with their combined fortune of £34 million, they can’t buy their own house? It didn’t have to be that massive.

Justmuddlingalong · 13/08/2020 22:58

Oh it did. Massive egos to house and lots of loos for all the bullshit.

Oldbutstillgotit · 13/08/2020 23:02

I am still struggling with the idea that a 16 bathroom house is considered. a family home . Why so many ?

WinnieTheW0rm · 13/08/2020 23:02

Surely the lots of loos are a counterbalance to a courtship of choosing to go in the woods?

Oldbutstillgotit · 13/08/2020 23:04

But why go to the woods for a wee when they had an en- suite ?

Justmuddlingalong · 13/08/2020 23:07

Perhaps she was making notes in her diary. Or was desperate for a good fart.

Ouch!

Viviennemary · 13/08/2020 23:20

Everything was done by the Royals to make her feel welcome and she's thrown it all back in their faces. Same as she did to her father. Thats why the press is bad both sides of the Atlantic.

I am listening the audio book, it is hilarious - cringe after cringe. One point I did pick up was that when talking about 'Heads Together' he said it was Kate's idea which was scribbled one night on the back of a cigarette packet. I did wonder if this was a slightly underhand way of making public that Kate smokes...

I am pretty incredulous at the contents of this book - it basically confirms all the negative stories (a lot of which I previously thought were probably made up). The amount of talk about the luxury and privilege they routinely enjoyed also surprised me - i thought they would have wanted to down play that side.

OneMile · 14/08/2020 04:09

Also willing to be there is a significant guarantor on that mortgage - is no way a bank would give a mortgage to a corporate like that without one. Prince Charles??

SunnyDayatSiestaBeech · 14/08/2020 05:05

I read an article once about things that define the lifestyles of the ultra rich, above and beyond the things you would expect - such as mansions, yachts etc. One that interested me was that when the ultra rich go on holiday - an 'advance team' goes ahead - taking all the luggage and literally prepare the accommodation so that when the 'client' arrives they literally walk into a fully equipped home with all of their personal belongings in place - clothes hung in wardrobes, food in the fridge, personal robe hanging in the bathroom, car in the drive and so on. They literally walk out of one life straight into another without lifting a finger - no packing, no unpacking etc.. A lot of stuff is bought as duplicate and just dumped at the end of the holiday.

In Finding Freedom, they actually volunteer the information that this happens for Harry and Meghan. When they fled to Vancouver for the 'sabbatical' before Christmas, they arrived at this beautiful sea front mansion house and and all of their belongings were already in place, their clothes hanging in the wardrobes, the house completely set up.

How can you freely admit to having a life with this level of privilege and then lecture on social inequality and sustainable travel - during a pandemic. The mind boggles.

Pancakeorcrepe · 14/08/2020 05:30

If the mortgage is for that amount, they’ve put a deposit down of $5 million.
Oh but they’re very down to earth! She cleans her face with wipes! He likes cozy houses! It’s all everyone else’s fault. He really is an over privileged so and so. He’s now doing a documentary about the Invictus Games he takes all the credit for, I do hope he mentions that he used the idea of a group that was already doing exactly the same thing. No doubt we will have simpering Meghan in that documentary too to reinforce everything that her husband is saying.

StartupRepair · 14/08/2020 06:36

I have acquired a copy. It is deeply banal if that is possible.

SunnyDayatSiestaBeech · 14/08/2020 06:49

The whole 'faith' thing - i think is to align with the Obamas and Oprah et al all of whom regularly refer to the importance of their faith when making speeches. Michelle talked about faith a lot in her recent autobiography and I think Meghan is particularly modelling herself on Michelle to be honest.

The prayer circle is particularly cringe. This is common in the US but typically called together by the 'talent' before a huge show or performance. The 'star' calls the rest of the supporting cast and crew together and leads a prayer circle before going on stage. Michelle did this before going on stage to give speeches during her book tour. Shows how she viewed herself on Suits.

The Telegraph yesterday had the most scathing attack on HandM contained within their book review of FF by Simon Heffer.

“Self-serving tripe”, “an offence against even a moderate standard of intelligence and good taste”, “it’s the perfect present for someone you wish to insult” etc. Best of all “this book is an unwitting tribute to what appears to be the Duchess’s titanic self-obsession and the tragic ease with which the Duke has apparently decided to be swallowed up by his wife’s narrative”. All of the in The Telegraph!!! No holds barred! There’s lots more in a similar vein!

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 14/08/2020 09:22

She, sorry Omid, frequently compares MM with Angelina Jolie in the book, which is certainly aiming high seeing as MM had an annual reported income of $450,000 from suits, a fashion line, and advertising deals, whereas AJ can command $20,000,000 from one film. It clearly shows MM thinks of herself very much in the line of these total A listers, as there is a lot of name dropping - Obamas, Oprah, Clooneys, Ellen etc, when she is effectively a bit of a soap actress. It certainly gives fuel to the fire to those who have criticised her as nothing more than a social climber.

When they met H was living in a 2 bedroom cottage. When Archie was on the way they were to move into a 5 bedroom cottage. Not small, but not extravagant like these californian A lister homes. From what I've read, not just in this book but from all sources, is that Royals actually live in rather modest accommodation. Not palaces all to themselves. That must've been a huge disappointment for MM

Jillyhilly · 14/08/2020 09:33

That Telegraph review is absolute gold. So many quotable lines it’s difficult to know where to stop. I love how he describes the book as “the perfect present for someone you wish to insult” and wonders if anyone in the future will “want then to read a book solely about these two future nonentities? I doubt it.”

Eaumyword · 14/08/2020 09:42

All this awful and embarrassing press just proves the point that the curtain should not be lifted on the RF.
I really do feel sorry for HMQ to have her last few years blighted by these two and her more awful son.
