Harry and Meghan News thread

I thought we could have a thread for latest news. MN did say they didn't mind one or two threads. And no rules except stick to MN guidelines. It's Meghans birthday today I just read. And the Queen has wished her a very happy birthday on the royal Instagram page according to that popular Oracle the DM.

Well, quite! This house hasn't been 'earned' through talent or hard graft or anything self earned.
This is why I feel grumpy when wealthy celebrities and royalty petition 'normal folks' to donate to causes and preach about equality. Wealth like this just demonstrates how unequal life is and I feel like saying, put your hands in your own wealthy pockets and donate!

  • With the exception of Keanu Reeves. Keanu, I know you do your bit and love you for it!Wink

I've never understood people wanting to live in those massive sprawling mansions, not just H and M. I do think they are definitely living beyond their means. Furnishing and running a house like that is eye-wateringly expensive.

Bumlooksbig · 13/08/2020 11:02

PH could probably just about have subsisted on handouts from PC before MM because as a single guy, with a lot of things (like security) provided for free by the UK Govt, a reasonably small house and retinue and most of his bed and board coming free courtesy of Royal occasions (Christmas at Balmoral with Granny, staying at friends's properties overseas etc) his outgoings were fairly small. Some staff salaries and property running costs, car service, the odd bit of overseas travel and restaurant and bar bills. Even with Saville Row suits it is unlikely that a single guy would spend as much as a woman as he can wear the same suits many times and doesn't need a handbag and shoes that cost more than my house. Chump change when Mummy left you £30m and Daddy gives you an allowance.

But in a few short months, it's all change at St Pancras Station. Frogmore cottage gives some indication of the sort of lifestyle HMTQ imagined for him and MM. Not fantastically luxurious but still a nice pampered existence amongst the Range Rover brigade.

Santa Barbara. Well. I won't repeat the long line of expenses already trotted out. It's like taking someone who has been on UC and housing benefit their entire life, with rent paid, council tax paid, free property maintenance just a phone call away, free school meals, free school uniforms, free dental care and glasses yada yada and dumping them into a situation where they have to pay a mortgage, pay the full whack of council tax , pay for school uniforms and meals, pay to get their teeth fixed and also pay when something goes wrong with the house.

In a relatively short time, Harry has gone from single guy with a few outgoings to married guy with kid and a wife who will never be satisfied. MM is one expensive piece of real estate.

Amid all the comments about the Montecito house, did anyone notice it's been for sale for five years??

CallmeAngelina · 13/08/2020 11:19

How common is that though, at that end of the market? There can't be a huge pool of potential purchasers with wealthy parents to help.

And how sure are we that the DM is correct on this?

CallmeAngelina · 13/08/2020 11:20

Might explain those curtains though.

ajandjjmum · 13/08/2020 11:23

Think it's in a fire risk zone - we were in Santa Barbara 3/4 years ago, and there was real concern over wildfires.

nasiisthebest · 13/08/2020 11:42

@StartupRepair

I can't think of any occasion where my friends would know or remember what I wore or ate, even if they were there. I realise my life is very different from Meghan's but this obsessive level of detail must come straight from her.
I agree. I can't even remember what I wore and ate three days ago, let alone what anyone else was wearing or eating,
Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/08/2020 11:44

The national forest immediately behind the town doesn't help, aj ... if that lot goes up, the fire risks everything in the area

And I wouldn't want to assume the Mail's correct on anything, Angelina, though they've got a better chance in the US with so much being open to public scrutiny
There's always "silly money" available for the right house, though, so I admit I'm a bit surprised at how long it's been listed; it looks lovely to me, but then I'm just a prole

Oldbutstillgotit · 13/08/2020 11:44

@ CallmeAngelina I am sure if it is false, they will issue a statement or sue .

ThaGugaBlasta · 13/08/2020 11:54

It's hard not to enjoy a mental picture of Kate Middleton flicking through FlashyMansionsLA.com, finding the one with the most bathrooms, then putting a call through to the Daily Mail in a bad fake accent.

DorisLessingsLesson · 13/08/2020 11:56

The DM seems to be quoting TMZ on the house story and referring to the legal paperwork. Perhaps the realtor leaked the story but then the media waited till the paperwork was in the public domain. In the UK it would be the land register but I don't know what the US equivalent is.
How long will it take before the media make the link a PP did - that Archie must have been out of the original house to move to the new one.

longwayoff · 13/08/2020 11:59

I will arrive at work shortly. If anybody attempts to gather me into a prayer circle, there'll be trouble. Anyway, what happened to living in Africa that they love so much?

Viviennemary · 13/08/2020 12:07

Do keep up. The Africa thing was last century in Meghan/Harry time. They're trailblazers don't forget. Hope your prayer circle meeting goes well. Grin

Oldbutstillgotit · 13/08/2020 12:12

Surely someone from Suits or another show M was involved in ( no idea what else she had done ) could easily confirm the prayer group thing ?

Justmuddlingalong · 13/08/2020 12:15

'While camping she cleaned her face with baby wipes and happily wandered into the woodlands if she needed a bathroom break.'
And yet a mansion with however many bathrooms is now required.

Eaumyword · 13/08/2020 12:15

I have to say if I was called into a prayer group at work, my eyes would roll so far back into my head, they'd think I was possessed...
No fear though, I work with like minded sweary folk who find life funny at times Grin

Roseburn · 13/08/2020 12:16

It's in the Times and the article quotes information from the Los Angeles Times

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/harry-and-meghan-secretly-buy-house-in-santa-barbara-wv9qlbb2c

Searches of property tax records indicate that a company linked to the Duchess of Sussex bought a nine-bedroom house on a seven-acre estate, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The hypocrisy of them is beyond belief!
Lecturing everyone on how to live, where to advertise , reducing your carbon footprint etc etc etc and then buying a huge mansion to live in for what is effectively a Family of 3!

They should buy a 3 bed semi , get proper jobs and earn their respect or have the sense to keep their mouths shut because they are only making themselves look more and more ridiculous as this car crash keeps unfolding !

StartupRepair · 13/08/2020 12:38

Do you think Harry has ever seen a utilities bill in his life? He will not know what has hit him when they all start rolling in.

Bumlooksbig · 13/08/2020 12:42

@StartupRepair

Do you think Harry has ever seen a utilities bill in his life? He will not know what has hit him when they all start rolling in.
He has people who have people who will deal with that.

All of those people will also require paying! Grin

billysboy · 13/08/2020 12:48

have they paid for Frogmore ?

My definition of cosy is very different.

Oldbutstillgotit · 13/08/2020 12:52

Once more the DM is drip feeding ! It states that H and M have bought the house with a $9.5 million mortgage .
I always thought you needed an income for a mortgage ?
