Royals and American media coverage

ButteryPuffin · 04/04/2020 23:50

Saw this cover posted on Twitter and noted that it seems the tabloids do indeed exist in the US (amazing, huh?). This is pretty much what you'd expect from the source, and I think it's pretty deplorable, but I am interested to see how the American media in general cover the presence of the former royals who've now arrived to make their home there. Of course we can discuss their coverage of other Royals too and related topics. All welcome.

Link to cover story - please note I'm not endorsing it, I'm just sharing it:

I think it has gone quiet because the only Royal we now see is William who is doing a fine job.

7Worfs · 13/04/2020 14:03

That, but also long weekend and good weather, so many are chillin’ offline.
Also many are close to reaching peak Markle I think, I certainly am.

OVienna · 13/04/2020 14:19

Oh Roses good one!

BarleylemonPenguin · 13/04/2020 14:23

Also many are close to reaching peak Markle I think, I certainly am.

That's very true. Little more to say until they do something daft again. We've been here before, though - is this the calm before yet another storm?

7Worfs · 13/04/2020 14:26

Barley let’s hope so Grin
We’ve been talking about food and cats a lot lately.

OVienna · 13/04/2020 14:36

Lots of quotes from the DT the couple's preferred paper. It is what you'd expect, albeit softened.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 13/04/2020 14:52

As an indicator that I am peak Markle I fell asleep reading that article.

@Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas
You obviously don't know who Dr Judi James is. I'm not her biggest fan but yes, she is an expert.
Bless...

www.knightayton.co.uk/female-presenters/judi-james

Every day a school day, as they say:
She has appeared on BBC News, Sky News, CNN, Big Brother, Big Brother's Bit on The Psych and Bit on the Side, The Extra Factor...
...She regularly contributes to weekly publications such as Closer and Best magazine...

And get this:
...Judi started her career as a leading catwalk model and trained many big names at her modelling school in Chelsea, Naomi Campbell among them.

So she's basically really, really good at self promotion, and her 'Dr' certificate came free in a box of Corn Flakes.

@Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas
This comment is bizarre. The documentary was aired on their return from SA. The only audience who heard the comments when they were actually spoken was Tom Bradby and a camera crew

So then the problem with moaning while on the job is - exactly what?

They were safely home and not rubbing anything in anyone's face in South Africa.

Have you ever heard the phrase 'hoist with your own petard'?

mathanxiety · 14/04/2020 04:27

@Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas

I expect they blagged a freebie subscription to Disney Plus.

You don't have to blag it. It comes free with some phone services.

You're shamelessly scraping the bottom of the barrel now, and it's a sad thing to behold.

WinnieTheW0rm · 14/04/2020 07:13

The Disney Plus comparison was all over MN in recent days, as it was the standard one on the many and active threads about paying for MN.

I hope you have appeared on all those threads and ticked off everyone there in the same terms ? If not, then perhaps that should be next on your MN 'to do' list

He may have left royal duties and set up home with his wife and son in California but the Duke of Sussex is still finding life “challenging”, according to the primatologist Jane Goodall.

ArchePenguin · 14/04/2020 08:28

Please will you cut and paste the Times article ?

I suspect MaH carry their problems with them wherever they go in one of their many suitcases.

ArchePenguin · 14/04/2020 08:31

Ah, here we go, it’s in The Guardian

EthelMayFergus · 14/04/2020 08:58

Did anyone read the comments? I think they've really burnt their bridges here now, nobody has any sympathy at all and most people are saying they're a total irrelevance and The Times should stop giving them any publicity.

7Worfs · 14/04/2020 09:09

Thanks for the share token, TimesLady.
Indeed, comments are more entertaining than the opinion piece Grin

RosesandIris · 14/04/2020 09:33

Harry’s lost in a maze and can’t find his way out. He’s not going to to be happy living in a millionaires mansion in TinselTown, in a completely alien world with A list celebrities as neighbours.
There’s no way back and no way forward. He’s screwed his life up in less than two years.

7Worfs · 14/04/2020 09:45

At least he’s free from the burden of being a UK royal and pretending to give a damn about duty, Queen and country.

Though still sponging off RF and directly and indirectly, the British public.

Lordfrontpaw · 14/04/2020 10:23

Sounds like a good gig...

ArchePenguin · 14/04/2020 10:37

Yes, I’ll do it if he doesn’t want to do it.

Altogether now, and... curtsey

Lordfrontpaw · 14/04/2020 10:45

So people don’t need to curtesy/bow to them any more? Joe Public can put their hand on their shoulder and call them ‘mate’? Their builder can get into a yelling row with them face to face over a disputed bill and tell them ‘you’re an idiot - I’ll see you in court’?

Oh dearie me, they won’t like that?

CallmeAngelina · 14/04/2020 11:02

Another piece in AGC on them today...
129. ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER 04/11 7
"The alliterate former actress has the best, if not the best team you could hire in town. Apparently though she has sent word out through her media mouthpiece to the north that she isn't happy with them. Why? No one wants to hire her at the rate she thinks she deserves. No one wants to hire her for the projects she thinks she deserves. Her demands are much higher than reality. Oh, and as a side note. Since she can't use the title any longer, the movie studio asked if she wanted to change the name under which she is credited. She said of course not and that is who she is even if she "can't use" it any longer. Meghan Markle (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Fractured Fairy Tale) (Prince Harry drops his royal surname in documents registering new eco-friendly tourism firm Travalyst after leaving Britain for California with Meghan Markle)"

TimeLady · 14/04/2020 11:21

I agree about the comments. On any of these articles now, they are seen by the wider public as an annoying irrelevance.

MissEliza · 14/04/2020 11:25

So in the elephant documentary, is she listed in the credits as the Duchess of Sussex?
